  1. Sounds like your talking from experience, LOL. Mind you, I once backfilled on top of a shovel.
  2. Yeh, it would be nice to fish for a species that is rare but I'm told there's less contact in a rugby match, LOL, so I'll think I'll pass. What are they like to eat ?
  3. I don't think I have them anymore, it must have been 6 or 7 years ago. Never heard about them on a documentary either. Doesn't mean it didn't happen though. I'd be surprised if John is not still on line so maybe someone could get hold of him ?
  4. I used to chat with a gentleman from the States who used the handle Blackgriz. He was a proper old school American hunter. Anyways, he sent me a set of photos of a hunt he had in the desert. He'd been tracking a lion for a couple of days with his few hounds (Walkers if memory serves me right) with him on his horse and a mule carrying his pack. After a while it dawned on him that the lion was actually hunting him, with an eye on his mule. The series of photos that Griz took were of the Lion approaching the mule (with a large pack on it's back) with the hounds around it baying hard (as they
  5. I've often been tempted to go down but I've heard it can be shoulder to shoulder with lads casting across each other when the fish are running. Not my cup of tea. Is that true ?
  6. Boots, trousers etc. are all a matter of choice and opinion but one thing IMO that's a must for every terrierman is a pocket with a zip on it. Whether it's on his pants, fleece or jacket but ask any lad who's backfilled on his car keys or mobile phone and he'll agree with me.
  7. I don't know about Britain but here in Ireland it's illegal to use a handline in freshwater.
  8. When the pup died on me I had an autopsy done and the vet came to the conclusion it was poisoned. I said no way and searched books and the net and got interested in Lungworm. I brought Lungworm to the vets attention and she then changed her mind and said it was lungworm. The next time I spoke to her she said she'd met a few cases of it including her friends dog who'd died. So, IMO lungworm cases probably slip under the radar , so to speak.
  9. Keep your hands clean, if possible , and leave a large stone beside the dig to whack the shovel off every time it's covered. The fork is great too.
  10. That's good to know. If you haven't the backing of fellow hunters you've got nothing.
  11. I wonder would the mother be complaining about the trapping if her little darling broke an ankle in some rabbit digging. Would fit her better to teach her son not to be a vandal.
  12. I agree TOPPER but I had a pup die of it and it wasn't nice. She went from a good healthy pup to a dead pup in a few days even though she was in the vets for a couple of days. Your right, nothing to get excited about as long as your wormer doses for lung worm.
  13. No Paul it was the Fianna Fail / Green Party coalition that banned the Ward Union hunt from stag hunting. Your right about Labour though, very anti party.
  14. But if asked to vote for a ban would the vegan in him kick in ? Of course it would.
  15. If it's starting at 4 am then at around 3.50 am start walking around the site banging two dustbin lids together while screaming loudly. This should get rid of them. Seriously though it sounds like larsens would clear them up. You could have the larsens hidden by 7 or 8 am and put them back out the following night. You should catch between 4 am and 7 am. I've known crows to set of house alarms by fighting their reflection in the window. A larsen usually sorts it.
  16. You beat me to it Jigsaw. Go into "Latest News" and there's plenty of info on which of our politicians are anti and which are not. I also enjoyed the fact that they are rather pissed off at not being invited to Mr Coveneys conference. The fieldsport fraternity was though. Maybe there is a bit of common sense up there in the Dail after all.
  17. Probably OK if you only had one or two dogs, otherwise it's a bit dear. Try your local hunt kennels. Most of them do good beef at a decent price.
  18. I agree about the first one. Someone put up a good article on here a while back about the first pharmaceutical company who said that dogs must get a yearly booster. They were nearly charged with fraud as there was no truth in it. Vets over here charge between 50 and 65 euro to inoculate a pup. The same injection is 11 euro in a chemist. But now the law states that you must first get a prescription from your vet before going to the chemist. So the vet still gets his cut. It's a joke. Also it must be remembered that an inoculation is a precaution not a sure fire 100% preventative. Also
  19. Probably a lot more than we know.
  20. IMO the recession here in Ireland has probably saved some fisheries in that those who were destroying them have returned home. But to be fair some eastern European lads have set up clubs to prove that they are not all bad eggs. And it might just be as well too, I thought it was just a matter of time 'till someone was killed. I did a night session on Derry Lough a few years ago and was sitting on my chair bankside in the moonlight when I noticed I was surrounded by lads. I stood up and said "Hello". They said back to me "Oh, your one of our own." I got the impression that if I was a forei
  21. I know that lake well and through poaching it has been destroyed. It used to be a good fishery but maybe never again or for years anyway. Fishing for the pot is one thing but coarse fish are not good eating when compared to game or sea fish. I think everyone will agree to that. It can't be a need to eat them because of financial reasons for the simple reasons they usually bring a lot of beer with them and have their disposable bar-b-ques with them. Also the nets, inflatable dingys etc. they have all cost money. Also, the bye laws that are in place a few years now are written in their langu
  22. A lot of folk would argue that the once a year booster is more for the benefit of the vet than the dog !
  23. Even Clarkson would have more sense than to say that. But if he did there'd be uproar but as Cwis P. is more politically correct the Beeb will say nothing.
