  4. The North Armagh Dog Show and Race Day , Sunday 10thJune 18. As we left Portadown on Sunday morning with the dog chorus in toe, and howling out “The Boys from the County Armagh”, we headed into the beautiful sunshine of a glorious June morning. As we passed the picturesque setting of Oxford Island on the shores of Lough Neagh, very shortly Kinnego Embankment came into view and our venue for the North Armagh Dog Show and Raceday. We arrived in the field at approximately 10.30am, and to be honest, it was very hard to get a parking place at that time of the morning near the rings. Every year this show grows in capacity, but this year has topped them all. By the start of showing there was not a vacant parking place on this vast stretch of show ground and all parked three deep. As the cars and trailers emptied out on the field, it was quite evident that this was not only a dog show, but also a great family day out. It filled me with pride to see so many local stands displaying their goods to the Canine Community. “Field Sports Apparel “ owned by two of the most active country sportsmen on the field sports scene Graham Fyffe and Ian Fitzgerald were there with lots of Country Sports T shirts, badges and caps, Cahill Collars,Charlene Martin with Dog Food and muzzels, Brian Crothers with his catapults,Ice cream van, Burger and Chip van. The North Armagh Show brings people from all parts of Ireland and is now an annual event to look forward to. Along my trip around the rings, I had a little bit of chat, craic and banter with Niall Mc Cann and Stanley Moore with their winning strong dogs, Jonny Wilson and Freddie Hallissey with their Lurchers, Christina and Lexie Maguire with their beautiful Whippets and Mickey Thomas and David Mc Crory with their winning Terriers. All great Country Sports people, and always good for a laugh. Two top highlights of the day for me were the Ferrets and the Digging. Matthew Downey and Simon Kelly provided a superb display of top class entertainment in the Ferret showing and racing ring. Matthew your show is a credit to you, very well run and most enjoyable. Ferret Judge was : Barry Mc Greevy Ferret Showing was won by : Rose Mc Coy with Andre Ferret Racing was won by : Katelyn Maxwell with Polo. Well done to both ladies. Now we come to the digging. I cannot find words to describe the entertainment value these digging guys brought to this show. With T shirts flying in the air, Breandans wee green and yellow socks flashing in the summer sunshine, and Harrys muscles flexing everywhere, I must say my heart was thumping too fast for my age. With their women folk dousing them with water and cheering them on in a foreign language, very soon Simon Patterson blew the whistle and the entertainment of the day was over. And what a half hour that was. Here are the Results Dig 1 ; Harry Roche and Ken Wilson 5.20 Dig 2 : Breandan Coleman and Richard Coss 5.80 Dig 3 : Mark Hanlon and Kieran Stanley 3.55 And the winners are : Dig 2 : Breandan Coleman and Richard Coss. Kirsty Fyffe, David Carlisle and Patsy Mc Coy for their outstanding team work and brilliant organisation of all the racing events. These 3 people put some hard work and determination in on the day at the starting line in getting it all together, but you all achieved your goal 100%. Great work Kirsty and Co. And Finally, Finally, I always leave the best to last. Yes Breandan Coleman, you and your team were simply the best. You run your show with impeccable organisation and skill. It was very evident a lot of preparation went on behind the scenes to make this show a most enjoyable day for everyone. All events went without a hitch, and some very happy people went home with another nice trophy for the mantle piece. Breandan, you are not just a good friend, you are gentleman and an honest and true sportsman. We all had a most enjoyable and memorable day at the North Armagh Dog Show and Race Day. Thank you for everything and I am already looking forward to your next show in 2019. Margaret Mc Stay

  8. Armagh Sporting Dog Charity Show and Race day , Sunday 3rdJune 2018. ( Fiona Devlins Show ) The role I play among the good canine folk and Dog Show organisers North and South of the border and further afield can be quite diverse, demanding , challenging, and above all most enjoyable. No two shows are a carbon copy of the last one, with each show and each day being totally different in their own right. Armagh Sporting Dog Show, Sunday the 3rdJune was no different. The day arrived bright and early, with clear blue skies and miles of sunshine beaming down all day. With the car loaded up, we headed down the motorway to Feaghbridge Flapping Track, Coalisland and to Fiona Devlins Annual Charity Dog Show and Raceday. The show venue was top class, and very soon on arrival, the field was full to capacity with cars, trailers, dogs, and families, all out for a care free day in the summer sunshine. The show organisation was impeccable. Showing and racing went without a hitch, and on top of it all, we were blessed with beautiful weather. It was nice to see so many regular show goers and also some visitors. Amanda and Mark Delaney and their family from Carlow paid a visit along with their winning canine friends, and went home to Carlow with some lovely trophys and Rosettes. Burgers, refreshments and beverages were on sale on site all day. The little people played around and enjoyed themselves rolling about in the freshly mowed grass. Some tired little feet on Sunday night. Time flies by, and very soon it was time to start the racing. The nice thing about Feaghbridge, you have the choice of running your dogs out of traps or slipping them, and both was actioned on show day. Here are some Racing Results : Elite Winners Joe Leonard with Scared in 20.11 Malachy Mc Fall with Sukie in 18.64 Joe Leonard with not scared in 18.71 Non Elite Under 22 Kirsty Harpur with Lady Under 24 Kirsty Harpur with Skylar Over 24 Sean Burke with Milo Bull Cross Charlene Rafferty with Red Master Mc Grath Qualifier Charlene Rafferty with Ned Mick the Millar Charlene Rafferty Red Terrier Race Sam White with Finn Whippets Barry Chambers with Alfie Showing *Overall Champion Terrier Dorita Manson with Sheamus Reserve Dessie Mackin with Bill Lurchers *Overall Champion Lurcher : Maurice Mc Dowell with Sport Reserve Harry Roche with Chase Whippets Overall Champion Whippet Davy Best with Merlin Reserve Rea Wilson with Lexie Champion Pup Dorita Manson with Josie Champion Strong Dog Niall Mc Cann with Dollar **Overall Champion of Champions and Best in Show** Dessie Mackin with Sheamus Reserve Champion Maurice Mc Dowell with Sport A Big Congratulations to Dessie and Maurice and all above winners and well done. Some great prizes in the Raffle and always generates a flush of excitement through the crowd. We were very lucky and went home with three big bags of dog food. It was a picture to see the look on the face of young Brooke Rafferty and Lexie Rose Maguire, when Fiona Devlin, show organiser awarded and presented them with trophies for joint winners of young handler of the year 2018. Two very proud mothers on the day. Well done young ladies and very well deserved. And Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the judges for a job well done. Handling Classes : Lisa Dumigan/ Terriers : John Keane/Lurchers : Graham Brennan/ Whippets : Margaret Mc Stay. Judging is not an easy job, but you carried out your remit truthfully and honestly on the day. I took some photographs and they are on my timeline at the moment. And Finally, Finally, Fiona Devlin and Conor Mc Cormick, your show was a credit to you both with excellent team work. Trophies and Rosettes were beautiful. I know you put a lot of hours and sleepless nights in bringing this show to top quality standard, and you succeeded 100%. Many thanks Fiona for your kindness and hospitality around the rings. We had a very memorable day and are looking forward to more of the same in 2019. Margaret Mc Stay

  12. Batterstown, Co Meath Charity Dog Show Sunday 27thMay 18 in aid of Alzheimers Day Care. We left home at 7.00am and started off down the motorway for Batterstown Dog show, Co Meath. The morning was bright and clear and not a cloud in sight. We were joined on the way by some friends and stopped off for some breakfast. In a short space of time we were back on the road again with trailers and dogs in toe. Very soon Batterstown appeared on the Sat Nav, and we had arrived at our destination and the show ground for the day. There was a reasonable turn out of Terriers, Lurchers, Whippets and Pets at this show, and all out for a great days enjoyment. It was great to meet up with some old friends and also make some new ones. This was a very well equipped venue with a Country Sports stand, A1 Meats was there with his quality top dog food, a refreshments stand, Judges refreshments tent, and state of the art toilet facilities for ladies and gents. The PA system was brilliant and kept us all in toe and well informed of all the happenings around the rings. Despite the heavy rain in the afternoon, the wee people enjoyed themselves in the ring in the childrens handling class and also all the fun and treats of the show with plenty of burgers, sweets and crisps. Some tired wee feet on Sunday night. As usual, the raffle generated a great flurry of excitement around the field. There were some great prizes, and many happy punters. I was lucky enough to win a beautiful Hamper. The showing started at approximately 1oclock, and here are Overall Results. Whippets Champion Whippet Janet Duke with Oscar Reserve Sharen Wootten with Marley Champion Lurcher Aaron Mc Phail with Blue Reserve Brian Grady with Ash Champion Terrier Paul Quinlivan with Ruby Champion Hound Johnny Dicker with Rockview Barman Overall Champion of Champions was won by: Aaron Mc Phail with Blue A Big Congratulations to Aaron and all the worthy winners And Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the Judges on the day. Whippets: Margaret Mc Stay/ Hounds : Daniel Maloney/ Lurchers: Jed Donagh/ Terriers : Trevor Moody/ Pets: Marie Martin for a remit well carried out and conducted with efficiency and Integrity. Judging is not an easy task at any time, but you executed your duties fair and with respect. Many thanks to all involved. And Finally, Finally, None of this would be possible if it were not for the owner of the Venue Thomas Clarke Carriages. Thomas you gave the show an excellent venue, and of that we are truly grateful. A big thank you from the show organiser Jim Maher to Brian Grady and Tom Thompson who worked tirelessly over and above the cause of duty to make this how a success. On behalf of Jim, a big thank you to both men. And I always save the best to last. This accolade goes to Jim Maher and his wife Christine for running a top class show in aid of Alzheimers Day Care Centre. A very substantial amount of money was raised at this show and was handed over to day to the Alzheimers society by Jim and his wife. Already the day care centre has bought a gazebo and garden furniture with some of the money raised, so the residents can enjoy their daily routine in the sunshine. Jim and Christine you are a credit to society and your thoughtfulness knows no bounds. The Alzheimers society have requested Jim Maher to organise, if anybody in the surrounding areas of Trim would like to bring their dogs up to the care centre on a Saturday and sit with the residents for an hour or so , it would be very therapeutic for the residents to pat and stroke the dogs. PM Jim if you are interested. ( Photographs of presentation of funds on Facebook under Jim Mahers Profile. ) I can honestly say I enjoyed every minute of this show and especially when all proceeds went to Charity and to a great cause. My sincere thanks again to Jim and Christine for their wonderful work and kindness, and I look forward to more of the same in 2019. Margaret Mc Stay

  18. DWTC Dog Show and Race day at Sandy Heaks Modern farm in Scarva Sunday 13th May 18 Up bright and early Sunday morning with the “The Dog Chorus “ howling sweet music in our ears, whilst making sure the whole neighborhood was aware, it was their day out at the annual DWTC Dog Show and Race day at Sandy Heaks Modern farm in Scarva, Co Down As we arrived at the venue, we were enchanted by the beauty of this County Down country side. The field was in mint condition with show rings and race course ready to go, to host another days enjoyment at this now superb popular venue. There was an exceptionally large turnout of Whippets, Lurchers, Terriers and Strong dogs, backed up with glorious sunshine for most of the day. There was a lovely atmosphere, with many country sportsmen and women, parents and children, all enjoying themselves in the summer sunshine. You could buy dog meal, dog rugs, collars mussels and leads, burgers and minerals at the many stands situated around the field. Very soon it was Raffle time, and you could taste the buzz of excitement in the air around Scarva. The raffle has now become a very important part of our shows and brings out the gambler in most of us. As the saying goes, the craic was mighty. As this show was a Master Mc Grath and Mick the Miller qualifier, all dogs were in top condition and all rearing to have a go at these two prestigious events. Each year the DWTC goes from strength to strength and this year was no different. Time flies by so quick when you are having fun, and very soon it was Showing and Racing Time. The showing kicked off with the childrens handling class. I was given the honour of judging this class, and what a class that was. These young handlers are our sportsmen and women of tomorrow, and as usual all well versed in handling their faithful canine friends. In my eyes you were all winners on the day. Here are the Showing and Racing results. Hope I have got them all right. Many thanks to Sandy Heak for the brilliant venue. Without your generosity Sandy, this day would not of been possible . And Finally, I always leave the best to last. I must not forget the man and woman at the helm of this brilliant show day. Tom and Leanne Barry, with your family Morgan and Ethan, and your brilliant back up team, you made everybody so welcome. It was very evident a lot of hard work and organisation was carried out behind the scenes to make your show so enjoyable and successful on the day. Tom and Leanne, thank you so much for a most memorable day, and I look forward to more of the same in 2019. Margaret Mc Stay
