The weather came nice in the end, sunny but with a stiff breeze. It was good to catch up with everyone again and have a bit of a craic with the guys and girls, almost losing a finger to Toppers Terrier and getting teased by Torchey and Bigboy for getting my dog to chase bits of carrier bag and Hi-Vis jacket about the field! A big thank you to Torchey for the Ferret, he's just like you said, an easy going, laid back fella, the whole family has fallen for him already. I entered Roo in the Coursing competition for a bit of a laugh but heard some of the more proffesional racers whinging th

See you there guys and girls, were camping overnight so should be getting there for about 3.30-4.00pm so will catch you all tomorrow hopefully. Sounds like they'll be some new faces turning up from on here too so it'll be good to meet you all. All the best Luke. Just a quick question, is there a water source in the field or should we bring our own?

That's a stunning looking dog, would love to know what's in it and how it works out for you. Keep us updated. All the best. Luke.

So why the change of venue? I take it the fields water logged?

My dad used to hang Pheasants by one of their tail feathers and wait for them to drop off it. They used so smell pretty bad and were usually a bit green/purple around the bum/bottom of the breast. Didn't look to bad once cooked though but tasted a bit strong for me.

Not trying to eat the ferret would be a start!

Scotsman drops 2p down crack in the ground. As if!!! he'd of caught it on the back of his head as he bent to pick it up!

That's the type I thought he was on about, sorry.

Strong stuff for the heavier duty collars and leads or DDD for Leather goods. I've used both and would recommend both. (although SS might be a bit busy at the moment dealing with his dog?)

I think the police helicopters have a policy of always keeping half a tank of fuel in at all times in case of an emergency so just stay out for a few more hours and they'll have to piss off sooner or later! it takes loads of fuel to hover. Plus they can't justify doing that every night! At the moment all they have to do is hover over you for a few minutes and you bugger off. Jobs done as far as their concerned.

Best time to train a young pup to recall is food time! Make up their food then give them your 'recall' whistle/word whilst putting down the food bowl. Give them the food straight away and a bit of a fuss. After a week (probably less!)of this four times a day you should be able to whistle and they'll come running to you! (at this young age only do it when there's food for them) Once their coming to the whistle for food, make them wait a few seconds before putting the bowl down (and don't let them jump up). Quite often the pup will sit down naturally because it has to look straight up at the b

my dog keeps collapsing

A tin of custard works well for the car kit. You can throw it in the car and forget about it until it's needed. It contains sugars, carbs and proteins and is a great 'pick me up' for a dog. Much better than chocolate that will melt, get squashed etc. and is mainly just sugars only giving the dog a quick sugar rush and a poorly liver. I usually just make up a bottle of sugared water for my rucksack and just squirt it in his mouth to drink. -

I'm sorry to hear that Aaron, it's the hardest decision to make either way mate. All the best Luke. Edited to add, did you find he was hot to the touch after his runs? as Roo's skin get's really hot to the touch after a run. I've had him collapse from shock before and also almost go in the field. Maybe this mainly happens to Bullcrosses as they don't know when to quit and will push themselves past the point when most sensible dogs would quit? -
If you have a larger/heavier dog, I've had a lot better success taking squatters when I've got round behind them, not necessarily between them and the hedge. They always seem to launch from their squat in the direction their facing then turn for home so if your between the rabbit and hedge, a heavier dog can struggle to turn fast enough if the rabbit gets up before your ready.

I run Roo next too the bike most nights. I use one of those extendable leads just in case he stops for a pee and drags me off the bike! I get him up to a fast trot for a 1/2 mile then a slow run and ride until he try's to slow the pace down and drops back behind the bike. I then turn for home riding at whatever pace he seems comfortable at (usually just a trot). I didn't have anyone to ask at the time so this is just what I found that works for me (and more importantly Roo!). Don't worry about the distance, every dogs differant and whilst some will run for 20-25 miles other's would drop dead

I've only ever found this worked with the Spaniel? I could leave food down for him all day if I wanted to and he'd take what he wanted, when he wanted. If I tried this with any of my current dogs, they'd split their sides before they stopped eating! Matt, Tyke looked fine when I saw him mate, your doing fine by him. As others have said, you'll be able to see if he's losing/gaining too much weight, it doesn't happen over night so you'll have plenty of time to sort it out. -

Will be good to catch up with you and Collie/grey again, I'm sure we'll all meet at Toppers truck again! Looks like were going too camp on the saturday night so I can have a few beers and not have to drive home! Take Care Luke. -
Mine always get fed first thing in the morning now, so are always ok to run in the evening. If he's had a real hard night then he'll get a few chunks of meat and biscuits once I've got him settled. This was raised in the working dog health subforum a while ago, I think it was as a rule of thumb about 8-12 hours after a decent feed that you can work them hard.
