  1. Lurcher 330.... its a harvestman ( similar to, but not a type of spider), and the one that looks dead, will just be a skin that it has shed in order to grow. hope that helps mate
  2. Check out BPCA, NPTA websites for info on training.
  3. Good dogs, seen loads, like above mainly with grouse keepers. You end up with whats basically a steady easily trained gwp, quarters well, but not too headstrong. Rough n ready for most jobs that come their way.
  4. Good stuff mate, a couple less rats about... the deerhound sounds like shes keeping you very happy.
  5. Read a good few stories about the wash, looks a decent spot for a bit fowling, if I were you Id bite Ray's hand clean off!
  6. Before the ban, I worked a dog or two to fox, and started them prior to 12 months old single handed. With the ban you can no longer do this, but you are fine and within using your dog, or up to two dogs, to hunt them in order to flush them to a gun (or eagle!) If a fox has been shot, and wounded, your dog is legally allowed to hunt and finish the fox to prevent further suffering. So by no means is your dog out of action, just modified somewhat to fit in with legislation. Hope this helps DnN
  7. Northernlights, I wish my place had more deer, but it was flattened by previous stalker, which is why the forestry company is willing to pay me per head. Its still a pleasure being out on the hill. Ive seen badgers, foxes, seen 1 wild cat... red squirrel, pine martens (loads), polecat, stoat, red deer, roe deer, odd fallow deer, sika deer, tons of raptors, hoodies, woodies, ravens, and loads of song birds, no rabbits at all on the land I stalk, but ive got ground that is hotching with them so not at all bothered.
  8. I get paid to stalk the land in the first pic
  9. Back in 1998 I got a ram jacket, and it kept me pretty dry for 2 seasons, thats in Inverness, so it got some rain on it. Ive since bought another 3 or 4 of their jackets ad they have all been shite. Im after a wetlands cammo jacket,(best cammo for the hill) but they are like hens teeth, cant find a decent one... might have to order from cabellas USA, and get it sent in gift wrapping to avoid the tax!
  10. 'my land' ? who are you.......edward longshanks.....it's oor land lol
  11. thats sum hill lol looks like a ballbuster for walkn haha Aye, and theres the ever changing weather to contend with too... had a mate up from North East late last season, he and his dog threw the towel in before we even seen any game lol all the best!
  12. In theory.... never owned a hawk myself, but shot thousands of corvids.... they are suckers for decoys, why dont folk decoy them in, then slip bird from a hide? Its not hard to get them i close if your consealed from their view. just a passing thought!
  13. Seen some good footage of people slipping them from the vehicle windows at crows n rooks feeding beside the roads, but all short slips the bird was straight on them
  14. I use milbemax for regular broad spectrum wormer... it deals with more stuff than drontal plus. And once per year I use advocate, usually in the spring before the ticks get bad, plus I take dogs into Europe so want a good measure of protection.
  15. Dorset was acclaimed the top county in the UK for Biodiversity, second was Northumberland.
  16. Hi chaps and chapettes, Just hoping some of you will have knowledge of obtaining as well as sending dog sperm straws. In particular, over long distances.. Just need some info on costs, and procedures. I might not be on line for a few days, but would appreciate PM's or info on this thread that may help. Thanks in advance DnN
  17. I was after a working bred otterhound pup, but couldnt find one for less than £1000 ! Is that the going rate? If so, I'll stick to hound crosses.
  18. No point calling your own terriers someone else's. Lots of folk like you say start off with dogs from a big name in terriers, probably for security, but once its no longer those names working and breeding the next generation, so surely the credit belongs with the owners. I personally admire such chaps greatly for working their dogs hard and ensuring their stock is made for the job. But I see way more bad coming from 'big brand' terriers than good, eg: the sale of pups for huge sums, which may never have been associated with the advertised name, just for some poor newcomer to be sucked in by th
  19. Never a truer word spoken elisderyn, but I think it should apply for all lurchers. Even the small whippets should at least be keen for them, and many are. I was a gamekeeper before the ban and my dogs were the main tool for foxing over the 12,000 or so acres of hill ground I looked after. I prefered the dogs as they were the most reliable for getting results at any time day or night when I had a spare couple hours. I expected my lurchers to run with the bike all day, hunt away if they came across scent of fox, and also go check holes as we do our rounds. My main fox dog started to call me
