Evening all, i bought a pup from a bloke a couple of months ago. When i got him he was hiding behind a curtain and was totally scared of your hands going near him. I have a feeling he was clattered a bit too much in his previous home. I brought him home and he is now like a different dog, he is perfect in the house and out on walks, he comes on recall and is no longer scared of peoples hands. So i took him out with us ferreting, he caught his first rabbit on his fourth day out which i was more than happy with but i have noticed other problems. When out hunting he becomes hand shy again,

Like has been said, see if you can share permission. I have next to no land but my hunting partner has more than he knows what to do with. So in turn for taking me on his land, i do the driving, i bring sandwiches etc. Its a mutually beneficial arrangement and we have a good laugh.

Was out hunting the other day and a jill was missing for a good amount of time, so out came the locator, found her....4 foot deep. So after letting my hunting mate do all the hard work he finally broke through to the tunnel. the ferret looked up at us and we could see the bunny she was after, so we pulled the rabbit, then checked the tunnel again, another rabbit. the ferret watching us then started scratching away again at the mud, my mate couldnt believe it when he poked around and managed to pull a third rabbit out, as soon as the rabbit was out the ferret was scratching away again at the

What a fecking vanker completely ridiculous. I have never owned a locator in my life, am I also completely ridiculous? Get off your high fecking horse and drink some milk good boy. Ferreting went on before the advent of locators and will still go on without them. FFS grow up and act your age not your shoe size. TC Of course it went on before locators but why risk the ferrets life and health, locators are for the ferrets benefit more than ours. They work hard for us and we should do all we can in return
-
Sorry for the vitriol but are you special needs? 5 minutes almost every day is ridiculous, you're refusal to use locators is ridiculous.... Needing a glove is ridiculous... Basically you shouldn't have been sold the ferret, completely ridiculous!

Ive always liked a bit of bedlington in a dog although i just picked up a new pup and hes a whippet X greyhound bull....we shall see how he goes!

yeah mine are changing into their winter coats thank god, through the summer i cant tell my best two jills apart

Me and my mate do this often, only collar the hobs. If a Jill does kill down the hole you enter the hob and hell soon go to the kill at which point we dig and recover the hob and rabbit, the Jill normally gets pushed of the kill or will continue to work or resurface.

Personally I've never had a Ferret die from the cold. Plus it is slightly warmer underground due to absorbing the heat from the sun and storing it, there's a method of eco heating that relies on this, by running pipes underground outside and transferring the heat into the house.

Shildon but willing to travel to find them homes

Hey people i have quite a few little fezzers that are in need of homes, 7 very dark polecats and 8 albinos, both hobs and jills are available and are free....help yourself, these things are eating me out of house and home lmao The poleys are half micro and in comparison to the albinos you can see a big diffference. They are all bred from my best workers to my hunting partners best workers
-
are they your birds in avatar mate? What are they? They are gyrXsaker and gyrXpere if my memory serves me, the photo was taken when we were catching the falcons up after hacking them up in scotland. Not my birds, they were bred for sale in the UAE. Nowadays i only have a gyrXsaker at home, still working with the birds though

On most of our land we can get 30 odd normally, although on some patches of land this number at beginning of the season can be +.... All depends on the land though

Where abouts in cumbria are you? i have plenty of kits available very soon
-
I hope your little one makes it, keep us informed on how he goes, cheers

I too have had this, i had 2 ferrets with it. fine one minute, next minute they were skin and bone and diarrhea. One of the two survived and hes still in the house getting a lot of attention. the other sadly passed away rather quickly. I dont know what it is but im guessing its some form of bacterial infection. Maybe broad spectrum antibiotics would help.

What The Worst Thing You Ever Did Ferreting
bhawk replied to Fly The Boy's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
When i first started out hunting on my own, i heard a rumble down below, stooped and put my ear to the rabbit hole, rabbit came flying out and smacked me square in the face and sent me tumbling down the hill backwards...luckily no-one was around to see! -
so sad to hear, at least he was given the chance.

I bought some micro's last year, there is definitely a noticeable size difference and theyre damn good workers. I bred from them this year and the kits are little stunners. I also have a normal size jill and a behemoth of a hob that i bought from an auction. the big boy isnt the best of workers but im planning of getting him vasectomised and using him for bringing jills out of season. I got the micros from a bloke in hartlepool.

Get it to the vets, no idea what it is but it needs attention!

wrap all nets in a bobble, when laying nets, take the bobble off and put it on your wrist, that way when you're picking up, you put the bobbles back on the net....if you have bobbles left on your wrist you know youve missed a net!

Her hatred of other ferrets could well be a behavioural trait that has been learnt. So hopefully her kits being raised right wouldnt have such an issue.

It has already been touched upon, everyone thinks "best" of the best is different, its a relative term. For instance, me and my hunting partner have different ferrets for different tricks. Lets say the jills have worked a warren but we still have the feeling theres a bunny down there, we stick in "bear", when he goes down a hole the rabbit either leaves immediately or is killed and dug out within minutes. guaranteed. So while he may not be a good worker all round, he does have his uses! Also, photos arent always proof. You could have the best jill around but have crap land meaning only a sma

I bought some ferrets last year at auction, three ferrets for a fiver. All have been worked and do good, but its true that they were an unknown quantity.
