fox shooting with shotgun
Squirrel_Basher replied to pest hunter 151's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Just to say in reply to Johns post that ive called several foxes with food already in their mouths .Hunger i think may sharpen their aproach but is does not stop it if their well fed .The desire to cache ,hide food is what drives the fox ,makes him a survivor . -
fox shooting with shotgun
Squirrel_Basher replied to pest hunter 151's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Not knowing you or your methods mate ,i would say its you and your methods that arnt helping .Are you serious trying to call foxes into shotgun range in the snow .I take it you are stood in the middle of a field ,calling,No back drop ,switching the light on and off to gauge the distance of matey . Right ,thats out the way so heres what i do that should have foxes crawling up your trouser leg regardless of whether they are squeak shy ,lamp shy or both . Learning to call with your hand is the first major thing ,without it you wont succeed .Master this and the night is yours .The tones ,the vol -

How To Slow My Terrier Down
Squirrel_Basher replied to CcooneyMadDog's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Look mate, disregard what you have read in the threads before this Shite . Dogs NATURALLY bolt food ,it is the way they are designed .The sickness afterwards is natural too ,he will re-eat it when he wants too .It is a natural way to ensure the dog gets enough food when in company ,whether he is or is not .Some dogs will never do this ,some will never stop but as long as hes fit and well theres nothing to worry about . -
Not strickly true ,some bitches are ultra clean when in season which means they are missed .I have one that you would never catch in ,the neighbours bloody alsation lets me know though .Ive learnt to spot the signs from her though .

built a live catch trap
Squirrel_Basher replied to stubby's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Nothing to do with regs mate ,a few back handers ensured that the £200 a night charge is restored .Two operatives for two hours ,that £50 per man per hour .For shooting a few ferals .Scandalous .Only joking of course but your method has defo been shelved as one of those labour saving devices your boss can live without . -

Maybe a daft question... are foxes Canibals??
Squirrel_Basher replied to blackfox's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
What a load of crap. If your referring to the fact that POLAR BEARS wont eat cubs or slow adults mate then you need to watch a bit more discovery channel.Well known fact when food is scarce .As to foxes eating their own kind i've no doubt about it but no first hand experience of it as i incinerate all carcasses as a good bloke should -
Would that be a bitch by name of laurel by any chance ?

How's this cold snap affecting deer?
Squirrel_Basher replied to von's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Im seeing the exact opposite mate ,deer sat out in the middle of fields during the day but tracking reveals they spent the night in cover .Complete reversal to normal behaviour.Maybe the slight thaw here is keeping them out to avoid being dripped on .Only a guess though. What i have noticed is that the roe are not in their taditional wintering grounds and have travelled a bit to where the food is available i guess, eg cropping . Personally im refraining from shooting too many does in this weather as opposed to the odd one because the hard conditions give a false representatin of whats on the -
Couple of hours out yesterday
Squirrel_Basher replied to Squirrel_Basher's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
It varied a bit mate ,some were plump whilst others you could shave with . -
Stood on the edge of a wood for a while yesterday afternoon and found myself on a flight line albiet a slow one .The birds came over in large flocks which you pigeon shooters will agree is not good for a decent bag .Set a few shot birds out in front on some rape ,more as a target for crossing birds than a landing spot .Managed a round ten before the light went and as i went out to pick up the deeks,i saw the back of charlie coming around a corner about 50 yds away and below a plough line so he couldnt see me .This farm is next door to a chicken farm so i had no qualms about shooting it shou

Legistation change regarding .22CF?
Squirrel_Basher replied to danebrewer10's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Personally,i'm in full agreement with the new laws and seasons .Too many deer for the good of the national herd and the smaller species can now be shot with a .22 centrefire ,well .222 and up.Shot roe with the .222 and no excesive damage ? -
This white stuff is becoming a pain in the arse for stalking on foot .Had two stalks foiled this morning by vigilante does. Well done on your outing mate.

Gamekeeping assistant ?
Squirrel_Basher replied to jackdean1230's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
The gamekeeping world is evolving mate ,I will stick my neck on the line here and say that not many positions these days are sole keeper duties only .There are some obviously but my advice to anyone starting out would be to get as wide a range of countryside skills on your cv as possible and if that means certificates then so be it .Dont look at the job in the short term ,experiece yes but not at the expense of no qualifications .A school leaver these days who is not from a keepering background, needs every means at his disposal to secure a job in this line of work .Good luck young man . -
Deben mk3 Terrier locator (long range)
Squirrel_Basher replied to Simpson10's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
From what ive seen ,the deben is fine for leading you to the area but its the fine tuning that needs to be mastered as you can be way off .Same as any system ,practice Swore by deben for years until a major let down .All i will say is that weve had a few collars go quiet in use .Not what you want and down to bad battery connections .The bellman is ,in my opinion the way forward and is the best on the market that i know of not having used the ortovox mind . -
If you ever get your collar felt ,you had better decide what you were digging in ,earth or sette .Thats when the difference becomes huge .From experience .
