After taking Martin one evening last week , to a place i have and seeing 9 deer ,i thought i better have a look around myself .Its a market garden with many types of cropping ,brassicas mainly but root crops too .Arrived at dawn to a very dark and cloudy outlook.Changed the route from the one i usually do as the wind was wrong for that .Saw a fox curled up in a plough furrow ,well we saw each other at the same time really and off he went but in no particular hury .They arnt shot here as they help keep down the vermin and do no damage to the fields .I glassed a trio of does up against a hedge

1st Dig and BIG lesson learned!
Squirrel_Basher replied to slingshot82's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I would say you have the makings of a good terrierman mate.Just dont get trigger happy with a dog in still in the hole . Not easy on your own but get in the habit of seperating dog and fox with a spade .The old possum playing fox still haunts me from my younger days but dosnt happen now . -
I think all stalkers aim to get as close as possible ,foxhunter included but its in us all from time to time to push yourself to see what we can do .The 100 zero seems to play on folks mind as to being the limit of the rifle but ive found myself thats only the tip of things .I shot a cwd at 320 last year from a rock steady rest and never alowed any for drop .A clean kill in the middle of the chest was the result with a witness by my side whos also a member on here .Modern stalking rifles ,scopes and ammo are capable of far more than we currantly accept. As said ,the game is called stalking and

why do deer stalkers charge so much
Squirrel_Basher replied to wboulter's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Have to agree with the last post . Not all the cwd stalking is pay by the day .Still a lot of farmers want rid of them ,knock on doors and stop whining.Be thankful that you have free stalking of any sort . As long as people are up front about thier costs i have no problem with it but i once shot a red stag to be told that it would cost me £200 to have the headset .This was after agreeing there was no trophy fees involved .I had the last laugh as the antlers left with me without him knowing -
1 THING YOUR'E WELL WRONG ABOUT IS GETTING YOUR QUARRY, No1 PRIORITY IS GETTING THE DOG,SAFETY OF THE TYKE COMES BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE. THE QUARRY COMES 2ND. JMO. Dont dig much then mate .

Squirrel_Basher replied to martin's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I lie awake most nights thinking about pussy but that said i never lost a minute on that little wretch .Ring me when you have the .223 local mate . -
Best year was 2003 with 273 foxes shot off 700 acres ,a free range chicken farm .The year before we did 97 and the year after we shot 123 all off the same farm .The big numbers happened when we got used to the place fully and includes what was bushed and dug .The area has never recovered and i now shoot maybe 10 a year .Nowadays i only shoot them when required .Im on 19 for this year with no expectations of a record year .

Why differenciate between a bayer and a stayer. They are one and the same in most lads kennels or they go .BUT,a bayer is nothing without a desire to keep the quarry still til dug to and this requires a bit of stubborn hardness. In my experience ,a pure bayer is slightly afraid of its quarry and is often pushed back by aggressive lunges, sometimes walked over and very ofen results in another hole dug. The ideal terrier for me is one that is not afraid to tackle, hold and will stand its ground when faced with the worst scenario. The reason terrier bitches are put to hard dogs is to impart some of

Looks rather pleasant weather mate!

Some lads in this thread talk of using the dry cow tubes for puncture wounds every dig and the next sentence talk about the overuse of antibiotics .Well heres breaking news lads ,the dry cow tubes are pure pennicilin .Pennicilin is one of the stronger antibiotics that need careful use so please dont overdo them .Something else too -skin that is barely attached ie chin ,is better off removed as it will not take again and only causes wounds to puss up .Scissor off back to the new and plaster with suda cream daily .
-
Every dig and end result is different so you have to judge things for yourself on the spot .First thing anyone should do is check the little warrior over and not just the face .A dog that is dug to regular will be immume to fox bites of the puncture variety.Slashes are a different thing though and should be priority clean up.Dirt in the eyes looks bad but is not a priority and can be dealt with when the dog is home .Wasing the dog down with cold water on a cold day can be detrimental and may trigger shock .Far better to clean properly at home with warm water and if the dog is that bad then ho

why do deer stalkers charge so much
Squirrel_Basher replied to wboulter's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
So glad ive got mates ,mates with land that is and a variety of species on them .Take it for granted not paying i suppose but then again ,half the fun is in returning the favour free of charge .So long as people want variety and the demand is there then prices will only go up mate .Try swapping what you have access to for what you want access to, on here .Not everyone has roe mind and may jump at the chance of one or two . -
Seeing 25 replies i expected some contraversey but none .Thanks to all of you and good sport to you whenever you dig .

Yesterday saw us on our first propper digging outing of the year ,it being the first available day after the shooting season . Most of you will be thinking about rapping it up now on charlie but im afraid this is pest control pure and simple .With that squarely in mind you can read on as this is not about future sport .We started at 10 am and tried 17 places without so much as a tug on the lead .We parked up near to a hanging with 3 good places at approx' 2pm and used my bitch to try for a mark . The first two were rabbity so the last one really was last knockings . A strong mark got us excit
