    Consistantly breeding from bay only types will result in a steady drop in performance experienced by more than one well known breeder .The standard of the terrier in your yard can ONLY be maintained by consistantly using a dog that will kill his fox easily .I have seen the rest and lets be perfectly honest here they are found wanting when the pressures turned up .Too many terriers bred from that are below par IMO

    good question stig. i reckon you cant train a good earthdog to come off. ive seen a few in all the years i used to work terriers. one or two of them just didnt take to the job and either jibbed or semi jibbed (culls) one was a freek. cowan/brightmore bred terrier that killed below but would call out with ease unless engaging his fox. (we bred a bitch from this dog that would stay but not engage and was mute. she would just sit with the fox till dug. ) the best ive seen have been scatter bred russells. the bright sort that have the submissive trainability of a collie these again i feel are

IN MY OPINION. as that is all that is an opinion. ive seen a few dogs that can be called out. i owned one for many seasons. she was a little yapper that could be shouted out. and was very handy indeed. i worked with a lakie that was hard enough to kill the majority of its foxes and did this with ease, he could be dug to and was dug on many occasions . he took a lot of damage over the years due to his hard nature. but he could be held off the lead at an occupied earth untill sent down by comand . he could also be called off on comand.

    My guess is after a trauma like that the deer lie down in shock for a time allowing the bone to fuse in weird positions .

    Tuesday just gone saw me headed down to The Stalkers house where we drank coffee before heading off to Deepest Devon and hopefully my first encounter with a wild boar .Just before first light we were both in a double seat with the only sound being running water to my left and the instruction that boar can be as quiet as any deer if they choose to be and could appear anywhere around us .I was using Owens 308 previously zeroed by myself at 70 yds when he came up here last.A heavier rifle than im used to but comfortable on the rest .In preparation for our visit the farmer had been around on his

    Berries nuts and fruit aplenty ,may be a sign of a bit of the white stuff to come .I see the fieldfares are here in number now and started on the hedgerow berries .Out stalking tomorrow with the stalker on my ground so hope to see a few roe .
