It still boils down to who makes the decision. I don't know the chain of command in America, but there will be an awful lot of links in it; all the way from a humble air traffic controller right up to the president ! If I remember rightly, Bush was reading stories to school kids when an aide whispered into his ear...he took a long time to respond, and nobody would have dared shot down a civilian aircraft without orders from the very top. Theres a film, called "Eyes In The Sky", it think, based on a true story. Gives a very good insight into the chain of command needed to launch a dro

It will have the best defences available, problem is human ; who has the authority and will to initiate them ? The number of aircraft in the sky at any one time is unbelievable, they are literally "stacked" above places like New York and Washington, waiting to be given a landing slot. They can be seen on radar but are identified by their transponder, the hijackers had disabled the transponders. These were normal commercial flights, so someone had to decide if the transponder had been disabled or had malfunctioned. Who was going to make the decision to bring down a plane fu

I was in my office on Jeddah Airport in Saudi, and my son rang me from the British Consulate. He said " have you got the tv on dad ?" , I said "no, why ? ", he said "they are bombing America", I switched on, and it was surreal, like watching a movie ! There was a lot of worried people about, especially as our housing compound was mainly Brits and yanks ! Cheers.

The head of a group for " the protection of isolated, indigenous, tribes of the Amazon", was killed when his group that was trying to contact an isolated tribe in Brazil came under a hail of arrows fired by tribesmen ! The tribe has previously been classed as "peaceful " ! Perhaps they just want to be left alone, not "protected " !!! Cheers.

We haven't been self sufficient in wood for a long time. An interesting story involves wood and jet engines; Shortly after ww2, Harold Wilson, later to be Prime Minister, did a trade deal with the Russians. Part of the deal included the Russians selling us timber to be used in the rebuilding after the war, and the U K giving the Russians, plans and prototypes of the Rolls Royce Neme jet engine . The Russians then put this engine into the Mig15, which was used to devastating effect against us in the Korean War ! The question "why didn't we get the timber from Canada"

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-act-2020-status/coronavirus-act-2020-status-table Its a very complex set of legislation. Government need to report to parliament every two months. Cheers.

I think all these quick fire laws have what's called a "sunset clause", Don. Meaning they have to come before parliament every so often to be extended or repealed. The "Covid-19" law is a bit vague, allowing the government to adjust or modify as needed. Cheers.

Sweden has 10,000,000 people......the U.K. has 65,000,000 people. Sweden has around 800 infections per 100,000 UK has around 500 infections per 100,000. Cheers.

Sadly, in my opinion, Ireland decided to align itself with the EU and not the UK. That is their right. BUT , now that the UK has left the EU, the status quo can't be maintained; as I've said, many of the advantageous agreements between Ireland and the U.K. are incompatible with EU laws and rules, and will need to be changed. This is what happens when you are not a sovereign nation and can't make or apply your own laws. Cheers.

Wilf, the CTA concerns travel but not trade or customs. You're right, it IS an EU border, the only land border the U.K. has with the EU. The UK and Ireland have a very peculiar relationship with each other, there's nothing else like it in the world, and it's simply incompatible with EU rules. Ireland, as a member of the EU CANNOT make trade or customs deals with any country, including the UK, one of the main reasons for the UK leaving. Its a dilemma I can't figure out, and have no confidence in politicians not making a complete f**k up of ! The only solution I can see is Ireland
