  1. "Just splitting hares"......... I saw what you did there ! ?? ! As for the word "lurcher" I've heard the same thing as you, but also that the word comes from the same root as "lurk", as in "lurking around". But who knows ? Cheers.
  2. I had a whippet in the early 70's that had collie and Greyhound three generations back on his dams side, and Greyhound four generations back on his sires side, as can be seen on his pedigree, but was accepted by the B.W.R.A. as a "Whippet"; Was he a lurcher or a whippet ? To be honest, he caught as many hares as he won races, so it didn't worry me a hap'orth what he was classified as ! ? Cheers.
  3. I agree entirely ! I was simply pointing out that all racers aren't longdogs. Lurcher racing isn't fun these days, it's extremely competitive with some very lucrative money and prizes on offer, especially in the big Irish game fairs, and, just as in whippet and Greyhound racing, cheating rears its ugly head. Cheers.
  4. I can only speak from experience, others may be more experienced, and I'll respect their views and opinions ? Cheers.
  5. Surely it's got to be deerhound ? The clue is in the name ! ? ! Just joking, before the deerhound haters jump all over me ! ? ! Cheers.
  6. No, they don't all use longdogs; I'll give you just four examples out of many.......there was a lad I know very well, used to be a member on here, who won almost every big lurcher race in the UK and Ireland with his 1/6th collie x 15/16th greyhounds. And how about Markbrick ? He won countless races with his collie/Greyhound/whippets. Or Geoff Fletcher with his Beddy/greys ? Taysider off here won the Scottish Championship with his beddy/Whippet/grey. As I said, your technically right with your "longdog" v "lurcher", but you're telling us something we already know ? Chee
  7. Technically you are correct, but being rather pedantic. One of these was deerhound/Greyhound, the other was Beddy/grey x deer/grey-Whippet/grey, but for the sake of simplicity I called them both lurchers. Cheers.
  8. There's been non-ped whippets such as Memphis Belle and Loves Lockdown, that have beaten greyhounds and broken track records at Greyhound tracks, but to be fair, they have a fair bit of Greyhound in them and are almost as big as greyhounds. Also it's usually the sprint distance , 270-300 yards they win over, not the longer distances. I remember matching a non-ped Whippet, Robbo, (Bilko x Frozen Kill ), against a Greyhound, over 150 yards on a whippet track and winning by about two yards. Emboldened, I was then suckered in to a return match over 270 yards at a Greyhound track for a far lar
  9. I was just about to write "what goes around.....comes around" ! ? Cheers.
  10. I've met him, and I have absolutely no hesitation in describing him as a shithouse. One of his notable porkies was telling people he had lived and hunted with the red indians............turned out he once had a game of pool with a yank who had a Native American relative. Cheers.
  11. Very late 60's, '69 I think. Blue Prince, ( Blue Boy x Zarwood), 21" and 35 lb. He certainly wasn't a deer dog, but took a few, as well as hares. It's just a little wind up for my protege mC ? As for my user name, no, I've never owned one. I was walking in San Antonio, Texas and saw a man walking what I thought was a rather nice lurcher so struck up a conversation. He was slightly offended that I thought his dog was a lurcher and informed me it was a Chartpolski, a Polish Greyhound. I was intrigued and looked them up, hence my user name ? Cheers.
  12. Whippet ! ? ! * photo is about 50 years pre-ban * Cheers.
  13. My bitch had a couple of runs on the lamp before the season ended, and no doubt she'll bump into things during my walks in the summer, as the place is lifting with hares and roe, but I'll not be actively looking to work her. Shell have the summer to mature physically and mentally and learn a few more manners, then be started in September. Everyone has their own methods, and as I said, I'll not knock anyone ? Cheers
  14. Why can't I see any of the twitter posts on here ? Do I need a twitter account to see them ? Cheers.
  15. I won't knock anyone for doing a bit of summer hunting, most of us have done it, especially when young and just starting. I'll take the odd roe or hare during the summer, for the pot.....I like eating them ! Good, wholesome, natural food, and far cheaper than shop bought stuff ? But be honest about it ; None of this nonsense about "keeping the farmer happy" or "starting off a pup", if you enjoy it, then that's your business, no one else's, I doubt any summer hunter is going to make a difference to my sport ! Cheers.
  16. I remember meeting Asha some years back, up at Jedforest Hunt. He had a deer/grey with him and a pure deerhound pup. I like the Doxhope blood, because they were workers, but they are getting hard to find now, and the blood is getting diluted. I wish I had taken pups from my old bitch. Cheers.
  17. I know, mate, I had a chat with Bill before I got my deer x grey, Lima, as he bred her sire; Doxhope Knights Errant, that's also the grandsire to my pup Nancy ? Cheers.
  18. I used to joke that the "Doxhope head " was the result of a borzoi being added to the deerhound line at some point, I'm sure it wasn't though ! Cheers.
  19. If I didn't have a deer x pup on at the moment, I'd have tried one of these just for the fun of it ! ? ! Cheers.
  20. I think Johnson was alluding to the fact that Putin is trying to deny the Ukrainian people their democratic right to be an independent, sovereign country, and the remainers are trying to deny the British people their right to a democratic vote and overturn Brexit. Therefore Putin and the remainers are undemocratic. Cheers.
  21. I was gifted a teckel pup from imported working parents, but I'm a running dog man so gave it to my brother when he had his old Jack Russel put down, Some people think they are terriers, but they're not; they're hounds, and if you don't want to see yours disappearing into the distance, on a hot scent, never to be seen again, train it well, or invest in a tracker collar ! ? ! Cheers.
  22. Isn't "silently announced" an oxymoron ? Cheers.
  23. I knew Philippinos who bought birth certificates, passports, school certificates, genuine ones, saying they were older than they really were, so they could work in Saudi. You had to be at least 25 at the time. When they neared the compulsory retirement age of 58, they simply bought new documents saying they were younger ! Cheers.
  24. If my house was posh enough to have a flagpole, I'd fly these; Cheers.
