  1. The genuine article is still around,...I saw one only recently...? However,..back in the 80s, there was a few nice American Pits locally,..they were mostly chocolate in colour, and said to be from the Mayfield lines? I never paid much attention to these animals,..not because they weren't to my taste, ..they most certainly were. Indeed, as a type of canine,..I found them amazingly beautiful and obviously functional.? Facts were, I did not find their owners palatable....they were not to my taste, and I was probably not to theirs.? Anyway, these types have always remained i
  2. It's crazy, but I spent half of my life dodging regular work, so that I could go hunting,..then I managed to spend the rest of it, getting paid, to go hunting....? Its a funny old world, and life often pans out, in a different way to you had planned? Main thing,...most important thing, the critical thing, is,..ya gotta earn some vonga,.. but ya gotta be a happy bunny... Mind you,..there is always money to be earned, one way or t'other.. Iv'e never put all my eggs in one basket, just in case...?
  3. Yes,..I am a poor sleeper,...it did not seem to matter when I was younger,..but I cannot function if I'm tired.?
  4. Real old style herders? We had quite a few of that ilk in the 1950's, and so did most of the farms around us... There was obvious trialing going on, but even back then there seemed to be a variation in pure farm dogs/curs/cattle mutts and the more closely bred and slightly more expensive,.Border Collies. We just kept the mongrelly types, they exerted a fair bit of eye and maintained plenty of bite,..but you had to watch them carefully , or they would go feral on ya..? As an aside,..I often wonder if nowadays,..the first cross Collie/Grey will go by the wayside? I say this
  5. Yeah, its a task that I do not relish,...but I've cleared litters from under customers sheds,..the Ballroom in a Holiday Camp (Hi De Hi) and once in a Nudist Camp! Locally, I am duty bound to assist the Keepers on several game shoots,..these guys have been fair to me in the past and permitted all sorts of fun and games on their ground,.so when the call comes out to provide a bit of, finding and flushing, I have to turn up...? Personally,..foxes hold little interest for me,...I much prefer rabbiting... Enjoy the Summer lads and stay safe, kind regards, OldPhil.?
  6. Hi,..well, you are obviously passionate about your pastime, and I applaud you for that..(I love a man who is serious about his hunting, I cannot be doing with fellows who are simply playing at the game..? They hold no interest for me)? Words and meanings frequently get lost in translation, and this occurs even when men are talking the same language? I apologise if my previous post was not as concise as it might have been. Like a lot of lads, I've been at the death of thousands of rats, especially when the big Barn Poultry sheds and Battery Chicken farms are being cleaned out...T
  7. Hi Huckleberry,...I am pleased to hear that you are enjoying your rat hunting forays? I used to do a lot of ratting with terriers, collies, whippets, etc , indeed, at one time in my life, I would far rather hunt rats than rabbits Mercifully I grew out of it, and followed a different path.. ? Your idea of trying to find, a tiny terrier seems sensible for the task that you might need it for,..however, unless your rat hunting is exclusively amongst piles of pallets or under wooden flooring, you might find that purchasing a tweenie tyke, you could end up carrying a passenger in you
  8. He sounds just about right for a Moucher...? I've bred similar types,..in fact, I rate this jukel as being my best effort,...perhaps not as the 'final solution',..but I was certainly in with a chance. I just needed one more sensible hybridisation to secure a future line. Went looking for a good, well balanced running dog bitch for him,..I found one,.but I left it a wee bit too late. Almost to the day that I had secured the dam for my breeding project,..his owner called me to say that Old Jake had suddenly passed away? And that as they say, ...was fecking that He was
  9. The Border Collie as a breed, is fairly varied in both type, size and shape, therefore,..when we see a variety of lurchers created from differing Sires and Dams,..there will frequently be an amazing array of miscellaneous examples. I've bred a few lurcher from Pastoral lines and whilst some have turned out racy,.whilst still looking like, thick set Greyhounds, a few have shown large chunky heads,... and taken on the look of a Bull Terrier hybrid? It is only when you start to line breed a family of lurchers , or when they are bred, as a commercial project, frequently using the same
  10. Yeah, I like them...? We had Merle cur dogs when I was a boy on our place in Presteigne. When the Farmers got together to do a gather on the Hills, or even when they were looking for a fox,.all the local farm dogs turned out and the Valley was covered in various terriers , the odd hound and of course, loads of sheepdogs.. With all the spotty and speckled types, the pack looked a right old motley crew. ? I never saw any Merle coloured dogs when we moved 'darn sarf'....but when I travelled to Winchester to buy a Deerhound lurcher, the old Traveller guy, name of Bill Shearing
  11. ? I know you are not too keen on the Blue Merles,..so I always fetch one along, just to annoy ya? The wee bitch that you might have seen run, one or two shushis, would be Angel.. I remember, her very first run on the Dales,.she went off like a rocket, into the bracken filled banking, and ran straight into an old partridge release pen ? The long abandoned wire frame had been well hidden from view, and when she performed a kinda double somersault, to land on her back,...I guessed something was not quite right... The result of this sudden collision was that she sustained deep cuts
  12. Would have to agree with you TOMO? Facts are, IF...you can get a fast type to slow down, use his head, instead of his muscles, then the quarry is half way into the bag. You have proved it yourself with your coursing bred jukel that took to the Dales like a duck to water.. Super fast dogs on rough ground, can be an accident waiting to happen, but, IF they twig onto the rabbit business and can adjust their God-given , natural talents and pure physicality to run sensibly, they really are nie-on perfect for the job? Because of the varied type of pest control work, that has been m
  13. Cracking set of jukels? I really like these modern coursing dogs.. We have a few locally, beautiful animals.....several enjoy visiting Holland and the low countries, just for a walk out..?
  14. Lurcher work can be dangerous.... Truth is,..our dogs only belong to us, when they are on the lead,...once they are away,..its down to Lady Luck.?
  15. You are 100% correct on that fact Daniel..? Our best Sheepdogs all had that Slape coat, and I've bred a few lurchers with such a pelt. We always called our Welsh herders, Bare-Skinned, as opposed to the normal Border Collie coat... The Kelpie and the ACD have a similar style of short coat...?
  16. Yeah,..I've managed to get into double figures, but as some lads have said, 'Something is wrong' ? I think that August will be hectic and we will possibly have a late season, dragging well into October,..but, yeah,...it ain't good is it..?
  17. Seriously now Brothers...? Sometimes, we all 'cop the needle' over the silliest of remarks,...words uttered by complete strangers, and often by guys who are on a completely different wave length, to one'self. In 99% of cases, such foolish comments go in one ear and out of t'other?..but,...for some reason,...certain remarks, strike a chord' and spark off a mode of behaviour that is both wasteful and non-productive.... After a lifetime spent around dogs and dog men,...it is pure stupidity to rise to the bait and become upset from the antics of other enthusiasts,...in short, it i
  18. That's the point fellah,...you don't mess about with the ferrets, and we don't run the big land, with purpose bred coursing dogs,.but, we all have a voice on the Hunting Life....
  19. I've got your number fellah,...?
  20. Thanks for that,...much appreciated....?
  21. I've heard that it is a game changer Brian...?
  22. What are you talking about ? Do you actually know what you are talking about? Do you think after 60 years in the hunting game, I need to protect my persona?
  23. I have never been abrupt with the name you mention...in fact, I think you will find, that it is entirely the opposite. ? What I cannot understand, is when there are several specialist sites that have been created for the serious Hare Coursing enthusiasts, are you coming on this Hunting site,...a site that was made for all the various field sports activities,..and certainly not solely hare coursing, and match dogs, etc....WHY are you not on those sites ? Who have you beaten in matches,...? Give me your name, and I'll ask folk if you are kosher, or simply just a fool that likes m
