  1. My mongrel Terrier but we also use 4 jrt's when we're out with the whole pack
  2. Thanks, the dogs used on the day werent mine though so all credit goes to herdwick and blackstaff. The dogs did well on the rabbits but i could certainly have done without the ferret retrieve.
  3. Your not wrong mate. All mine learn about ferrets early on and see them daily and i've never had a problem with them. The bitch in question isnt mine so doesnt see them every day, but was also broken to ferrets as a puppy. I also think the problem is that, due to a lack of rabbits locally, shes done no ferreting this year but a fair bit of ratting. Either way she'll not be loose with my ferrets again til im 100% sure of her. Im very good friends with her herdwick so i'll take the ferrts over regularly now to get it sorted. I just hope its not turned my jill against all dogs as they've all
  4. Took a trip to a new permission of Blackstaffs today with him and his son. We had to ferret a hedge next to the big house first thing then we were free to wander around and explore and just bolt to the dogs. We got started about 8.30 and netted up with long nets. The hedge wasnt too thick and the rabbits bolted well. We got 5 from there and were done by the time herdwick arrived. We left the longnets behind and started up a hedgerow with the two lurchers running free. Blackstaffs Pearl has come on leaps and bounds since the beginning of the season and has the making of an excellent fer
  5. i could just keep on going and make a seine net lol. I think i will turn it into a two metre stop net/gate net then knit one the right size for my 10m one. Live and learn i suppose, thanks for all the tips
  6. If i think its going to be a big day/night, or if the terriers are doing alot of water work in the cold, i take lucozade sport or glucose water. Very seldom have to use it but when you need it you really need it so well worth keeping in the van
  7. Cheers, just worried the extra will end up all over the floor? Would it be better with 50 or 75% bagging rather than 100% as it already got so much bagging in the height?
  8. Right, i've made loads of purse nets but fancied doing a stop net. I've started at 25 meshes deep, done 1.5 metres, then mentioned it to Water Badger. He was surprised at the depth and when i thought about it it seemed alot to me too. Just looked it up on here and it appears to be 10 meshes too deep . I dont even know why it started so big, didnt even really think about it. Now, question is whether it'll be a problem in use, will it just need less bagging or will it just collect every twig for miles around? Should i continue or cut my losses, turn it into an enormous poke net or continu
  9. The only problem with google earth is it doesnt show footpaths which would be very handy. I love the fact you can use it off your phone though and cant believe how accurate the positioning is. I've got to get a new phone that does all this clever stuff, mines out the ark!
  10. JRTxwhippet for me. Hes 3 1/2 now so had enough experience. His mark is good and his concerntration is phenomonal, totally focussed and usually in the right place. Plenty quick enough for bolters too.
  11. Yeah, im up for it. Where and when? Parker is laid up right now but should be good to go by then and i've got Tyla running again over the last few nights so, as long as she dosent break in the mean time, i should have a choice of two!
  12. The lamp on a lanyard is a must. I either use 17ah in a backpack for a full night or 7ah in a bino case over my shoulder if its just a quick shine.
  13. Sounds like it turned out good, somenights you have to put the miles in to see anything! I've been out the last two nights with my bitch just back from injury. Both nights were perfect weather but first night was on really good ground loads of rabbits but the bitch ran like a puppy, too keen, too fast, over running etc Last night just went for an hour locally saw three rabbit ran two and caught one but the bitch was running sensibley again. I think when shes been off for a bit she's just too excited. I wished i'd run the ground the other way round though, get the crazyness out of her on
  14. If it keeps bleeding whenever he shakes his head or excersizes then clean the wound, glue it if you think it needs it. Cut the toe off a sock or get hold of a girls legwarmer and put it over the dogs head. It hold the ear against the head and stops the wound opening up when he shakes. Leave it on all the time for a couple of days but check the wound everday. You can work the dog like this and it shouldnt open the wound although he cant hear as well so dont be surprised if he dosent seem to be listening. I found this worked with my jrtxwhippet, he had a bad split and kept shaking his head
  15. Very good, would be nice to get him some publicity. Get voting!!!
  16. I bet you just read the thread asking for driven hare shooting?
  17. Well, this thread really has brought every idiot out of the closet! The whole range of THL debates, anti dogmen, anti shooting, wholesale destruction of pheasants in revenge for hares, poachers, gypsies and finally the dog shooting debate! You're all mental, LACS will have this printed out and pinned to their office wall to laugh at!!!
  18. I dont think your wrong. It has nothing to do with clothes but there is certainly a growing lack of respect for land and quarry.
  19. Its amazing how precious people get about air guns. Air rifles have been used as pest control tools for decades and have done the job. I shot hundreds of rabbits with an ancient BSA meteor as a kid, not at the same ranges as i now shoot with my pcp but i made up for that with more enthusiastic stalking. I knew the limitations of my rifle and my shooting ability and worked within those limitations. I've seen people within expensive rifles fluff shots and wound rather than kill, i've also seen clean kills with cheap rifles. I think the main factor is the attitude and ability of the shooter.
  20. Im a subby and have to go where the work is, anything from 45mins to an hour and a half each way. Used to be ok when the money was good but now its barely worth it, i'd earn the same as a labourer locally which makes you wonder why you bother laerning a trade? Im just about to start up a business locally coz im sick of the travelling, being knackered all the time and the crap money. I'll probably earn less but wont be spending hours a day driving and a fortune on diesel. Fingers crossed!
  21. Lol - i knew you'd do it in the end!
  22. Hes asleep, I'll have to do it tomorrow. I dont believe im the only one that can string a sentence together, at least you do the photos now though
  23. Yeah that pretty much covered it. Basically a ratting trip, when the rats ran out the dogs got bored and disgraced themselves in front of the land owner. It all revolved around his pet goose which very nearly ended up "cooked". A bit of a balls up all round to be honest and nothing to be proud of but at least it survived. A bottle of sloe gin is definately in order, we'll leave the sweet talking to you herdwick, i know how good at it you are Blackstaff, as we've already got the story up here you might as well add the pics?
