  1. and for those that dont know what your talking about, who gives a f**k. I wouldnt expect anyone who dosent know to give a f**k, and to be honest im surprised anyone who dosent know has so little to do with their time that they feel the need to post on something they know nothing about. I wish i had so little to do, ho hum - par for the course on here. On a more relevant note, im glad she made it. Saved some embarassment all round! Perhaps a bottle of something may be in order for Allan?
  2. I've got an LED lenser, not as many lumens as yours and more money but very useful. Handy when you need to be discreet and just walking the dogs
  3. Anyone have a decent priced Portamag box for sale? Broken both lurchers again

  4. Its horses for courses, it all depends on the injury. Super glue works best for some things while staples are better for others. My lurcher bitch has given me a crash course in emergency first aid over the last few years
  5. Good write up as always. You certainly have some ground to go at
  6. Go bushing every Sunday with company, we share permissions and have a good crack and get to rest some of the ground a bit. Usually ferreting with a mate unless its just bolting for the dogs which i prefer to do alone although there been precious little ferreting this year with the rabbit numbers down so much. Lamping, sometimes alone and sometimes in company. I dont like going out with too many though as the noise can be ridiculous
  7. Agreed. There is nothing wrong with a good working lab. I had one years ago as a beating and peg dog but whenever he got the chance he would kill foxes. Did it while beating in full view of the line of guns once, that took a bit of explaining! It never effected his mouth though, soft as a feather on shot birds but hard as rock when necessary. I've always fancied the idea of a 3/4 labgrey but i think they would be too much wastage in the first cross litter to make it worthwhile.
  8. Im trying a new system with my new pup. Shes 4 1/2 months and retrieving a ball and small dummy fine, recently i've been out at night doing the same. Started out throwing the ball into the beam and now dropping the ball then walking away, coming back, lamping the ball and sending her for it. Shes just starting to look down the beam now and her retrieve is good. I've no doubt she'll catch on the lamp but my previous bitch was very hard to get retrieving so im hoping this will help the pup do it as second nature. Only time will tell! As for pegging down live rabbits ... get a grip! There is
  9. Homemade dankung thing with double tubes, the one i lost beating the other week, you can just about see it in the picture. Me and herdwick went back on saturday after beating somewhere else and i found it just where i thought. Yeeharr had one of his transparent ones with the flatbands. It was a big rat but Ollie killed it no bother, it did manage to get a bite in because my other dog grabbed the arse end of it so he couldnt shake it properly.
  10. Didnt fook Ollie though, did it! Did get a good nip in though! I cant believe we didnt manage to get any decent pictures between us, theres nothing for it, we'll just have to go again! There was no time for pictures, it was nearly a full time job stopping WB from dismanteling the farm buildings. Its a shame about the one i shot that fell behind the wall, it cant have gone far with a .44 lead shot in it!
  11. My mongrel terrier, mainly for bushing with the lurchers but rats, beats, retrieves (sometimes) and flushes things. He's big 18-19tts and big round the chest so no good for earthwork but he suits me fine.
  12. I'd forgotten about that, no, he didnt but he should have. We were very lame on the photo front. Didnt really think of the camera til afterwards!
  13. Mine is the chain saw smoker, i much prefer it to the rat attack one of WB's. Mine may be noisy and temperamental but its tried and tested. I think the noise has alot to do with them bolting too. The ratattack should be the business, loads of smoke, works most of the time, very easy to use etc but it just dosent seem to bolt the rats as well as a 2 stroke one IMO
  14. Back to your usual standard, a really nice write up. Its all about just being out there, the bag is not the be all and end all!
  15. Is he going to ride that rat or eat it? He could very well do either, you never can tell with him! It was a good size rat, that one was flushed out the lawnmower and took a chunk out of my terrier Those warrens were stupid deep, i cant believe Parker jumped off that wall and didnt hurt himself!
  16. How about catapults? Is it legal to try an knock ones head off with a catty Then retrieve with dog Yep, shot and retrieved is the way to go. I get a few like that every year, not as effective as shooting with a rifle or shotty but its so much more satisfying when you get them with a catty! The dogs love it, they'll mark the squirrel and as they circle the tree they sometimes drive it round to your side of the trunk for a shot.
  17. I always make the pictures too big, heres the last one
  18. I was on a ratting invite from Water Badger today with herdwick, scrapman, yeeharr and another friend. The farm was a mixture of chicken and cattle and had certainly had a serious rat problem recently. Unfortunately the farmer had recently had a go at gassing them so we found very few in the extensive warrens round the farm but had some good sport moving wood piles around and digging, i even flushed a whopping rat from inside a lawn mower! We ended up with 16 plus a few that the terriers ate and a couple of nests that were also eaten! I shot one on a beam with the catapult but it fell insi
  19. I voted brains, i already have a dog that will kill itself to catch quarry. She spends so much time laid up that i have just bought a puppy to take over next season so i actually get to go out whenever i want rather than whenever shes not banged up.
  20. They dont appeal to me at all and i cant see what they have to offer a running dog on any quarry.
  21. You got what i was asking / saying - cheers mate. What do you think makes one a better ferreter and the other better on the lamp? You reckon this is down to what you have put into them, the time you have given each dog on each discipline or is it a natural thing? Parker is a better ferreter because hes got a natural intensity and unending patience. He never gets bored and will watch, listen and mark where he thinks a bolt will come from. Alot of the time he is right and, unless we're purse netting which is unusual, he regularly catches as they bolt before they ever get to the nets. He i
  22. Sounds to me its probably not the dogs that are at fault here. People never cease to amaze me.

  24. Interesing post, mine ferret, mooch and lamp because i do. They know the difference and what is expected of them depending on what we are doing. Although they do both one is by far the better ferreter while the other is better on the lamp. Bushing wise they work very well although only one will enter cover, thats not a bad thing though as i have a terrier for that and want the lurchers on the outside ready, not stuck inside the bush, when something flushes. I wouldnt like to be restricted in my hunting by only having specalist dogs, what would happen if your lamping dog is laid up and its the
