  1. Yet again made the pics too big too put on one post. Heres the last few
  2. We've been ratting the same place for the last few weeks. There are tonnes of rats but we've struggled to get them bolting and made hard work of it up til now. Not sure what was different today, maybe shallower less established buries, but they bolted well. The keeper sent us to a different fenceline where he'd seen two rats yesterday and the dogs bolted them without help from the smoker. We carried on up the fenceline, a mixture of digging and smoking, the dogs were working really well and missed very few. The only fly in the ointment was Ollie, my terrier, who insisted of carrying all the de
  3. Great looking pup Trevor, thats should take the pressure off Milo next season. All the best with him
  4. Most sensible post i've seen for a while
  5. I think we can safely say you've got the hang of that camera now! Are you ratting sunday, maybe try some action shots?
  6. Opinel and mora, has to be carbon steel though. I cant abide stainless
  7. Is there any chance of you answering my question? I wanted to know how your non confrontational response would have resolved the problem? Would your system have resulted in any repercussions for the thief? Or would he have just become another statistic while your neighbour was left out of pocket? Another question, if punishment doesnt work why would you call the police? Whats the point of calling the police and sending him to prison if he will only re-offend? If fact why not give every scrote carte blanche to rob and steal? After all punishment doesnt work does it? You dont, by an
  8. They do but im not sure whether they'd want all the banking dug over. It would be bloody good though, you'd end up with a bumper bag thats for sure!

  10. I cant believe people are even arguing over this. How has it become, in some peoples eyes, socially unacceptable to slap a thief caught in the act?!?!?!? No wonder this country is going down the tubes! All i can say is i'd far sooner live next door to ftm with his "direct" approach than matt_hooks and his law and order approach. I think my possesions would be safer. Can i just ask matt, how would your approach have worked? See him breaking in and then what? Call the police, pat yourself on the back for a good deed done, watch him walk out with next doors gear and wait for the police to
  11. Next time we go we need another 4 smokers, try and get the sods on the move!
  12. a couple more, note the rats teeth in the last pic. One of the top incisors was broken off and the lower incisor was growing up into the top jaw.
  13. Me and herdwick went back to the same place as last week today. We were only out for a couple of hours and had the same problem as before, there are masses of rats but the warrens are so vast its really hard to get them to bolt and takes alot of digging. There is a picture of a piece of bank that shows how busy the warrens are and the same bank, and warren, goes for hundreds of yards and there are loads of banks all the same! The rats have so many options to retreat from the smoke without bolting that it can get frustrating knowing they are there but we cant get them! Had a good couple of
  14. Not interested in smoking them, do that for fun in more convenient places! Cant imagine the neighbours would be too pleased either. The garden backs onto the railway and we keep hens so we will always have rats coming in, just dont want so many! Are there poisons available that cant be passed on through the food chain? If not then it'll have to be traps. Are the multi catch ones the most efficient or should i go for fenns and tunnels?
  15. Have a look in the terrier section, theres some pics of Blackstaffs bitch ratting on sunday on a post herdwick put up. She's a good bitch, hunts up, rats, ferrets and lamps. She'll never be as fast as a lurcher or work as tight cover as a terrier but she puts her heart into everything she does and gets results. Blackstaff has put the work into her and the results speak for themselves!
  16. It was terriers only on the day at the landowners request, we were out with them last night though. Coming on very well!
  17. Im in for sunday, be careful of that hat - its worth a kings ransom!
  18. I have rats raiding my chickens and i want rid of them asap. Poison seems the best method but im concerned about my pup or any of the other dogs eating the dead or dieing ones and ingesting the poison. Is this a valid concern? If so am i better trapping and whats more effective fenn or livecatch? Not interested in using dogs etc, i do that already on other ground, i just want these gone as quickly and quietly as possible. thanks
  19. Bloody hell, thats a fair few pictures!!! Didnt realize how comical my blue hat is! Some real good ones there, the sequence of me chasing that rat and the dogs chasing me til they see it is good! Your gonna have to change your username to David Bailey soon!
  20. Credit to them for putting the time in and the quarry in front of the dogs but not my cup of tea. I more interested in the run than the finish so i'd rather have a lighter dog that can turn better but maybe not do so many a night. Wouldnt want that many people along either but different strokes for different folks
  21. Now the chooks have decided to start laying again im sure we can provide some eggs! Anything for Mrs Blackstaff, packed lunch maker of the year! Where are the pics!?!?
  22. It was a good day but not the best bag. I've never seen anywhere so infested, i think the warrens were just so big they were able to keep runnning from the smoke without ever having to bolt. Thanks for the invite herdwick and hurry up with the pics Blackstaff!
  23. Thats is a really good looking dog in that picture comanche
  24. All ours have lived with cats, can take them to other peoples houses with cats and walk them past any in the road. They were all trained like that from pups, if i told them to nail one they would but i never have or will. I think cat chasing or killing is just a nuisance. No surer way to lose permission than killing the farmers wifes pet. My wife also used to keep rats, and we could put them on the floor and tell the lurchers to leave and they would (not the terrier though, we didnt get him as a pup) even seen the rats get into the lurchers bed. My friends old coursing bitch would go o
  25. I think i'd like it, spent alot of time in africa, 3 months walking round zimbabwe with a backpack and a year in zanzibar. Built a house there and started off with a bed and mossi net in the garden, a stand pipe and a campfire. The plan was to stay there but once the house was built i got bored and the people were enough to drive you to murder! The house is still there although a hurricane has blown the thatch roof off. Assuming i ever have any spare money i will go and fix it sometime. I've always been drawn to living outdoors, i've got a mate living in a converted library and spent most
