  1. Is this a general question or aimed at anyone specific? I spent 3 weeks on a hunting camp in mozambique, a couple of months hitchhiking round Zimbabwe, 3 weeks photo safari in Botswana and a few weeks living with the Masaii in Tanzania. I also lived in Zanzibar for a year but i dont think that counts as the bush really. Now you've got my answer, whats all this in aid of?
  2. Shes been and had another go this morning, this time off lead without me even in the pen. Same result, she pretty much ignores them unless they come and inspect her then she have a sniff and move away. All good. Cheers herdwick
  3. No, its not. Nothing in the least bit illegal about ratting or rabbiting. Where did you get that from?
  4. I THINK IT IS MORE SO WHEN THE SHEEP OR LAMBS RUN THATS THE MOST COMMON PROB FOR PUPS OR YOUNG DOGS JUST SOMETIMES CANT HELP THEM SELVES BUT STILL A GOOD START GOOD LUCK KEEP AT IT I BE STARTING MINE VERY SOON ASWELL Yeah, your right. We got them moving round the barn with her loose amoung them, she was interested but not overly. Shes seen them run in the field and knows they're off limits, i just want her to be the same close up
  5. Your "expert" is an idiot. Ignore them, take some good advice, put the work in and a lurcher will do everything you need it to. Then you can go and make the idiot eat his words
  6. Made the pics too big again, whoops!
  7. Willow is just over 4 months now and coming on well so it was time for some stock training yesterday. Shes met cattle and sheep in the the field but not close up so as the sheep have been brought in it was the ideal opportunity. I was a bit concerned as she's very collie like in her behaviour and i thought her instincts might take over but she did very well. She was very respectful with the big tup, touched noses with last years lambs who were very interested in her but mainly just ignored them and focussed on me. She was a bit to keen on sampling the sheep shit for my liking but overall it we
  8. Crikey ... and i thought the lurcher section was bad!
  9. Choose a better night for your pups first slip, give him every advantage you can.
  10. This thread is a perfect example of pretty much everything that is wrong with the dog game, well done boys
  11. Good to see you back Ned
  12. He looks a nice pup Hammerdan, hope he turns out well for you. Just go easy on him when hes young as he wont be as quick as a lurcher pup but should have plenty of determination to get the job done. Parker wasnt entered until he was at least 12 months and he never looked back once he'd started! Fresh earth - sorry to hear that, sounds like you had a shit time, glad things are back on track now. I didnt realise the other pups took so much more to the terrier. In the pics i saw they looked similar, especially wee johns pup. It was a while ago though when they were younger Rocky1 - i hav
  13. He's 3 and half now. The sire was 10" tts! and the dam 19tts. I am suprised at how big he turned out, very few people can ever guess whats in his breeding either.
  14. "Staffy"? Dont you mean russell? Didnt you have one of the pups?
  15. not having a dig, that dog my the size and looks you would,nt think their was any jrt or whippet in it ,but thats lurchers for ya He is 21" tts and bred by Dogger off here who owned both sire and dam. We've had him from 7 weeks. Several other members bought pups from the litter and they turned out much the same size and build. If you dont reckon he looks like a jackxwhippet what cross do you think he looks like?
  16. What made you think bullgrey rather than whippet as the breeder advertised? That dog look very much a jrtxwhippet, cant see much of the bull in there IMO. I have a jrtxwhippet, not the fastest lurcher but a very good pot filler none the less. Hope you make the most of your dog regardless of how he's bred Here mine, about 3 1/2 now
  17. Thanks for the replies. Glad its not just me! We have just spent the evening poulticing the jrtxwhip's toe, i thought it was knocked up at first but turns out its a blackthorn abcess, its now drained but still no sign of the thorn itself. The terrier has scratched his eye too, either beating yesterday or bushing today, and he's usually bullet proof! Ho hum, maybe a weeks R&R will do us all some good!
  18. I wonder if its the kind of work? We do alot of daytime bushing, some of the runs are into or through cover or woodland which is hard on the dogs. I have to admit some of the injuries have been down to bad management by me, things that get up unexpectedly on shit ground etc. Maybe im not so unlucky, there are plenty of dogs killed at their work. My problem is that these dogs will be worn out if this injury rate continues for another couple of seasons and i'd not get rid when they've worked so hard for me. Im heading for a pack of worn out cripples!!! Fingers crossed the puppy is a bit
  19. The main culprit is my bitsa bitch, muscle tears, strains, wire tears, implaled herself on a stick, amputated toe etc. Shes coming up 4 years old and is a good worker just a bit too driven and oblivious to the consequences. The other is jrtxwhippet 3 1/2 years old, hes alot hardier a few knocks every now and again and the odd wire cut, but he took a thorn straight into his eye last year and missed the second half of the season and lost some sight in the eye. The ground is not too bad, alot better than some places although fields can be small so hedge diving has to be done at times.
  20. Yet again both lurchers are out of action. Nothing serious but i seem to always be beset by injuries! I work them alot, probably not as much as some but alot more than many, so i expect to have the odd problem but its pretty much continuous with one or the other. I keep them fit, feed them well, give them planty of recovery time etc Im on first name terms with a variety of vets and bonemen and have a whole cupboard of meds, ointments, wraps, ultrasound, linament, stapler and so on! Is this normal or am i just unlucky? How often are your dogs laid up?
  21. Thats a shame mate, they're good looking dogs. I've seen your posts on ozziedoggers, welcome to THL
  22. My older bitch went through a phase when she was really into them, plenty of pheasants, a couple of magpies and a few crows. Thought she had a barn owl once, i would have been devastated! Turned out to be a very pale hen bird. It can be a bit of a nuisance when you dont want them to do it but makes a nice change when your in the right place. I keep her well in check on any keepered land as i dont feel you should be messing with another mans livelihood but on unkeepered ground they are fair game!
  23. I would be really interested in putting him over a good whippet or whippetxgrey i think they would make some good dogs
  24. We have a JRT x Whippet, he's a cracking dog, excellent at everything though not as fast as anything thats bigger or racier. Excellent for ferreting, definatley his forte, cracking on the lamp, though straight-liners get away, his runs are very cleverly thought out consisting of lots of turning and catching it out. He wasnt really bought with being a fully working dog in mind but he has taken to it so well and done things we never though he would, trainability is very good as well. A strong type, that heals quickly and has very good sturdy 'cat' feet.
