Cheers lads. Hopefully we get some decent weather for it. Had a week in Cornwall earlier this summer and it just pissed down!

My missus and I are off in the camper van for the next five days. We're heading to west Wales and I'm looking for any recommendations. Good places to walk dogs, beaches, rock fishing spots, trout lakes or streams, quiet spots to park up etc. Basically we'll be exploring but it's a big place and local knowledge is always useful ?. We'll be looking for quieter places, I'm not into crowds at all. All info gratefully received. Cheers

That's exactly what I do bb. I was suggesting d Lloyd make one that simply does the same without all the extra functions. It ought to bring the price down and save some head scratching
-
Yes mushroom, still running the same tracker set up and still can't work half the functions!
-
Skycats books are good, she writes well so you feel like you are there. Tales of the field I think is the name.

I have been using the garmin alphas for a few years now, they are great and I wish I'd got them sooner but they are too complicated and expensive. Surely it must be possible to create a cheaper simpler system
-
If this works out for you how about getting your Chinese contacts to make some gps collars? The garmin are great but mega money and too many pointless functions. I reckon they'd sell like hot cakes if you kept the set up simple and brought the price down
-
They are lucky kids. If I'd been introduced to the hunting earlier it could well have saved everyone some grief lol
-
You've piqued my interest now. What is the use you have in mind for those knives??

She's a proper bitsa, there is whippet in there but she's not as whippety as she looks in the pictures

Years ago my mate had a lurcher bitch he used for beating, all went well til she pulled a roe in front of the whole line of guns. She wasn't invited again which was a shame as she was getting quite good. She was the first lurcher I'd seen work and got me hooked

Here's a few of mine doing her other job so far this season. To be honest it's made me far keener on stalking than I was before, I let her track any deer that don't drop on the spot, even if I can see where they fell. It's good practice for her.
-
I think they all have their moments of that Owain ??
-
I'm impressed by the idea of one working sheep. I imagine there will be quite a few that work beating and will retrieve feather. I'd be happy with mine on a rough shoot but it would be a bit nerve wracking on a big paid day
-
I know lurchers are supposed to be jack of all trades but has anyone's dog got an additional job along side the usual lamping, ferreting, bushing? I use one of mine to find deer while stalking and track them after the shot if needs be. I seem to remember someone on here using theirs as a wildfowling dog but can't remember the x. Any other special talents?

A small sea bass caught on a handline and a bit of bacon fat on the Hamble river

If you are seriously planning a trip I could put you in touch with the one of lads I stayed with in the south island? I think he'd like to do the same again but maybe charge a bit for it this time, I can't imagine he'd be extortionate though and would be worth every penny in my opinion
-
South island was my favourite by far, although to be fair, we did spend more time there as the earthquake stopped the ferry for a week. The west coast was stunning but very wet, South land was good, fjord land was spectacular. I liked the area round Nelson and also the catkin mountains. Basically it was all good. Just talking about it makes me want to go back! It took me about 3 months to get over hating this country when I came back lol

Haix army surplus boots. Just make sure you order the goretex ones not the desert boots. I've worn mine pretty much all day every day since November. Barely worn wellies at all last season as they were so comfy. I wear them as work boots too so the get some abuse but still waterproof even in wet grass. I think they were about £40 off eBay.

There was three of us and we were there 7 weeks, flights were £680 with China Southern, hired a car which was about £500 between us and probably spent about £3k average. One of the lads is loaded and spent loads and one skint and tried to budget. I was somewhere in the middle. If I went again I would get a camper van rather than a car as accommodation is not cheap but you can park up pretty much anywhere. The DoC campsites are good but basic and the private ones are good but pricey. Going out drinking is seriously expensive!

I decided not, we were camping so had loads of gear anyway. Firearms in airports is another extra hassle too. It's so easy to get the licence and you can buy any rifle you like, which is a fun thing to do in itself. We just sold the rifles at the end of the trip, lost money on them as you would but not masses and certainly got our money's worth. We also bought a .22 and shot possums, hares, rabbits etc. I forgot to mention that in the first post.

Hmmm ... I can see your point regards arse holing them. How long is the blade on that knife? I liked the shape of the other one as I used a similar curved blade in NZ and really liked it.
-
It will used for field dressing fallow and roe deer the majority of the time. Maybe I'm just being lazy wanting stainless, i've used carbon moras for years and they are great but I do abuse them. I was just thinking that stainless would be more forgiving. It doesn't take much to give a knife a wipe I know but it's not always in the front of your mind if your tired and got a few to do in the dark.
-
Do you make these to order? I like the shape and handle but would prefer it in a good stainless steel and a brown sheath if possible?

Sorry BH and Mackem, just seen this post. Regards my trip to NZ I made contacts on the Internet before I went and they were amazing really looked after us. Pig hunting, deer stalking, fishing, jet boats, goat shooting, sea fishing, the absolute works were laid on for us. Lively genuine people. If you take your FAC to police over there you can get a temporary nz firearms permit so we just bought a .270 and cracked on. If you go take scope, sling, bipod, case etc with you as the accessories really bump up the price. Any other info just ask. Cheers
