Does that read that you don't have a shotgun and have only been out with other people after the fox, and not for a while? Have you got a SGC or FAC yet?

What shotgun do you use on the fox, and what cartridges do you use for your foxing work?

What .22Rf Ammo You Getting Best Accuracy With
Deker replied to GEOFF.223's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I bought a brick of 500 and they went snap, crackle pop mate. Accuracy was no way near Eley or Winchester and velocity must have ranged from sub 12ft lb airgun to HV! Being a perfectionist and all to ready to blame my tools for my own ineptitude, vowed never to return. CCI's might work fine in your rifle fella. Just because somebody else didn't get on with them doesn't necessarily mean that you won't. I find them ok, not brilliant, but good enough out to sixty yards. Beyond that the SK's start to show their superior accuracy for me anyway. Try a box, it won't break the bank. If th -
At last someone with a constructive comment! If the fox walks passed you he will fall down easy with 7's. If you are looking at foxes out to normal 12g distances, you certainly need a heavier load!

Thoughts On 8 Shot 12G Escort
Deker replied to deerhunter25's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
If that works for you then fine. All you are doing is confirming the Hatsan is not good! I can't remember the last time my 391 jammed anywhere, with any cart, of any size, even 21g on the Skeet! -
Ok, perhaps I missed something, which ones don't Highland Outdoors supply? Cheers

Thoughts On 8 Shot 12G Escort
Deker replied to deerhunter25's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
That post is obviously a wind up! Perhaps you need to buy one, preferably from about 5 years back, love it, cuddle it, clean it, polish it, oil it and then tell us what you think! Now and again you get one that works and people are fine with it, but the people that end up in deerhunter25 position is disproportionate to the number sold. Simply look at the number of problem Hatsan posts on this and any other forum you like, then compare that to ANY other shotgun manufacturer, then tell me Hatsan owners " just don't look after they're guns very well". -
Gun Safe – Condensation Issues ??
Deker replied to Tornado1979's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
There are basic rules to follow and condensation risks can be reduced or removed altogether. Cabinet mounting position can be a big contributor, but make sure the gun is put away clean and dry and at the ambient temperature and it should not be an issue. Mounting positions can sometimes be difficult and all manner of tricks are employed to stop condensation, Silica gel, heaters, light bulbs (low heat), cabinet lining, as well as the specialist product designed for this. -
Centrefire Rifle Calibre Advise Required
Deker replied to Bootsha's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
There is a massive difference between .222 and .308 in terms of overall ballistic performance, so anything in the middle will be a compromise. If you reload then the choice is a little wider, but I see no debate that the .243 has to be the choice if you don't (and almost certainly if you do as well). I consider it the best long range Fox calibre available and it WILL drop any deer in this country easily if you do your part. I run .223, .243 and .308, they all have their uses! -
If this move is designed to last for more than 72 hours and you will have access to the cabinet, you need to advise the Police, if he is in a different region then you need to advise both regions. The easiest way to deal with this if you are storing it in his cabinet is to transfer ALL the shotguns stored in the cabinet onto yours and his SGC. If he is just looking after it for you and you have no access to the Cabinet, simply advise the region/s you have joint custody of the gun.

Views on the .204 Ruger for rabbiting
Deker replied to matthill01's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
You may not see the point in waste but to others the point of the exercise is not to produce a harvest but to actually remove vermin I have no respect for what I kill I give it no second thought there is no need for sentiment I'm paid and expected to do a job I enjoy that is killing vermin and producing game for others to kill my harvest is the money in the bank at the end of the month and my only concern is that what I do is humane and when it comes to making things dead you can never have too much gun. well I can understand your way of thinking a little more now I know its your job but- 26 replies

There are obviously some here that are not familiar with the Protection of Badgers Act 1992, it doesn't matter what may or may not stop a Badger, there are legal minimums. The Protection of Badgers Act 1992 specifies a bullet weight of not less than 38 grains and with a muzzle energy of not less than 160 ft/lb. The only rim-fire .22 cartridge to meet these specifications is the .22 WMR. (Since this Act in 1992 there have been a handful of .22lr HV developed that meet this minimum), but there are certainly no subs. The Act also prohibits the use of a shotgun of less than 20-bore gauge.

An Hour Out With My Son Hunting Charlie
Deker replied to hutchey's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Don't you just love it, foxes with the lad turns into deadly spiders. There is nothing to be concerned about for the average person with ANY native spider in this country, of which there are allegedly some 10,000 different types. Obviously some people have certain allergies and there are always imports, I had a call to a certain supermarket branch about 3 years ago as they had caught a big spider in their Bananas, and wanted me to check the other 3 Tonnes of them in their warehouse. It has also been my misfortune to deal with certain freight forwarders/importers and I do not deny od -

Deker replied to matthill01's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
No, is the simple answer. What you are talking about requires greater energy, therefore generally greater damage, a possible option is to move away from V-Max type ammo to something that does not expand so well, or at all, and attempt nothing but very accurate shots, but you then probably face power and over penetration issues. If you download to much you can end up with an interesting trajectory and counter productive results. So, in simple terms moving up the energy ladder, there isn't, ........another alternative to the .17hmr which offers great accuracy over longer range, less eff- 26 replies

It isn't necessarily that simple, and it has 2 barrels to machine. I do not know the gun that well, but if it was made 2.5", 3" may simply not be safe/possible. New barrels will almost guaranteed cost more than the gun is worth. I suggest you need to take it to a decent gunsmith and let him take a look/quote you!
-
You have not mentioned distances, but the 55g or bit more common 58g V max types are hard to beat in many situations. But it's a .243, 2000ft lb., give or take a bit, use whatever you like it will stop a fox easy!!

#54 I don't have anything between my .22WMR and my .223. (and never have!) I'm pretty sure that in other posts you always promoted Hornet along with CC. I naturally assumed you had one but maybe you just favoured it as an intermediate calibre. If I'm wrong I apologise. I think you are getting me mixed up with someone else! There is nothing wrong with the Hornet and some find a use for it, so that's fine, I am neither a fan or detractor of the calibre (17 or 22). I have 8 rifles on my FAC, and nothing between a WMR and .223 (and never have), on the face of it th

I would have said its typical of .223 / .243 but knowing Deker likes Hornet, that's what I guessed. I must admit it looks a bit heavy for Hornet although with no hands on experience of the calibre I couldn't comment. #54 I don't have anything between my .22WMR and my .223. (and never have!)

I don't have anything between my .22WMR and my .223. I can blast a rabbit with a .308 sometimes and you can't even see the hole, other times you can get it right with a rimfire and the destruction is massive. Those pictures are somewhat exceptional, even for the calibres/ammo used (different in each case). That's life, do it enough and that happens sometimes!

Do You Lamp Foxes In The Snow???
Deker replied to lampingking's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
They need to eat all year, naturally, just like us, they do their best to avoid the worst of any and all weather, but needs must. Foxes are creatures of habit so they are generally easy to track/ambush, but depending on the site usage virgin snow can be a fantastic asset for tracking fox, ETC! I see no issue with glare etc., off snow, it is nature at work, if they are ok with a lamp normally then snow should make little or no difference, if you have concerns then "perhaps" prudent use of the dimmer or filters can be considered. -
I'm amazed, that was a looooooong time ago, my lad lives in Swindon so I pop in most times I'm over there for a chat/shop, I have not seen it on his wall for a year or two, perhaps he has it round the back somewhere. It was a good gun, daft though it may seem at 16" the barrel was just too short for me, personal preference, simple as, (I had bought it this way) there was not a problem with accuracy or reliability, (hence why I bought another CZ American WMR). Someone will get a bargain there if he still has it, but this far down the line it will need a good check to make sure everything i
