What Do You Get Out Of Hunting / Shooting
Deker replied to vizlauk's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Your right on that the ones that p*ss me off are the ones with all the gear and no i dear sitting with £2000 rifles and the best of scopes and talk like they know every thing about hunting but have never set foot on a farm let alone seen a rabbit lol I love it when i start to trip them up with questions about hunting and they start to stutter or change the subject lol atvbmac Fortunately we don't have any of those in my club, but we do have a team GB Shooter, this is one of his rifles, I'm not sure exactly but I believe you are looking at circa £5K. What Do You Get Out Of Hunting / Shooting
Deker replied to vizlauk's topic in General Airgun Discussion
It depends why you do it, for most I suspect it is seldom for social reasons, I most commonly go out solo, sometimes needs must and 2, but that can be counter productive sometimes, and when its work that doesn't cut it. I shoot as a business, I'm also Secretary of a Home Office Club at Bisley, a Shooting Instructor, RCO, etc., and I shoot socially. Business wise I have asked myself the question more than once why am I doing this, even though I retain a lot of control of days/times/weather/etc I go out. The rifle club is a glorified Zeroing session for me these days for field work, and -
Sportsmatch site says they make mounts for Howa, if you can't work out which ones, a call or email to them will bring answers I'm sure. I don't know what fitting the Howa has off hand, but "if" the Howa has standard dovetails you will have a massive choice of mounts from loads of manufacturers! Actually, thinking out loud, I seem to recall you will need bases and rings for the Howa...I could be wrong, do doubt a Howa owner will come along and clarify.
-
If you are going down the Howa route I don't think you will find the Optilock any use, "as far as I'm aware" they are designed for Tikkas and Sako. Not sure what Sportsmatch make for Howa either. This is so often the problem, different rifles often need different mountings! Edit Just had a look at Sportsmatch site and they do appear offer some for Howa http://www.sportsmatch-uk.com/products

http://www.wildcatrifles.co.uk/ This should tell you all you want to know. Anywhere that sells the Wildcat will be able to get the Compact. Same price as the full version last time I checked, the baffles are the same, just a smaller tube etc.

Most RFD will be able to get Predators, and always worth a chat about the price! The Tikka Sportsmatch are designed for Tikkas, Sportsmatch also make mounts for other centrefires, you will not find anyone complaining about their mounts. Like I said earlier I run Sportsmatch and Optilock on my Tikkas, (the first 2 in the picture #29). I consider the Optilock overpriced and flawed, there is one joining screw between base and ring and it a problem getting them lined up. Some Like Optilock, they are welcome, but I have found no difference in performance between Optilock and Sportsmatch, and

Yeah speaking with a friend of mine who is the one that's going to be taking me out stalking at least to start with, I've decided to look again at the rifles and what secondhand mods and scope I can get for the same sort of money in the end. So he's suggesting and I'm leaning more towards that way of thinking now is to get the rifle on its own, leaning more towards the howa 1500 for that and then looking to get a 8x56 Schmidt and Bender scope with a wildcat mod. Looking at prices around I'm looking at £550 for stainless steel howa. £350-£400 for scope and then£220 for wildcat predator 8 or £24

Not One For Long Shots.....but!
Deker replied to David Aiken's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Situations and circumstances present and I'll bet many push the boundaries at times. Just the same, it would take a lot for me to consider the .22lr and subs for distance! But never say never as they say! -
Interestingly, some years back I actually, compiled and run such a course for a Major, National, Pest Control Company. Certificates were given out at the end, including one to me, because although I was a Shooting Instructor, RCO, Deer Mentor, FAC and SGC owner, BPCA qualified Technician, etc etc etc, I didn't actually have an Air Gun certificate! So I got qualified from a course I complied and ran!

Good luck, I'd be interested to hear more in due course, and also costings!

 You still suffering from the beer?! Check your 30 and 35 figures again on Both. -
Do what you like but Optilock for £200? Optilocks list a total here of £120, http://www.guns.gb.com/contents/en-uk/d495_Optilock_scope_mounts.html and if you shop around cheaper. I run Optilock on one of my T3 and Sportsmatch (£18.49p ALL in) on the other http://www.jsramsbottom.com/products/mounts--rails-1-tube-mounts-(11mm-38-dovetails)-sportmatch-1-mounts/smto48c-sportsmatch-2-piece-double-clamp-1-mounts-45mm-[to48c]-15mm-dovetail.html , there is no difference in performance, but frankly I think the Sportsmatch are easier to mount, and if there is a next time it will 100% be Sport

Synthetic nickel is excellent and is a really accurate nice unit. Go light weight if you ever add an NV add on you will regret buying a heavy one! My boy had the 452 Style (Nickel) and I have the 452 Silhouette (Blued). There was no difference in performance, they are both accurate. As I look after mine there is no difference in maintenance either, although some would suggest the nickel may have the edge in harsh conditions. NOT shooting, cleaning! A trade off is a silver barrel. It's up to you, I'd put the difference as personal preference, simple as!

Something isn't right with your figures. The .22 15.9 JSB string is completely wrong, the .22 retains more energy right through that range, not less. At the distances you mention the ft lb results are 7.96, 7.18, 7.05, 6.69, 6.12. You seem to have quoted the light .177 JSB as the .22 figures! -

I rather suspect you are correct, but the technicalities of shooting are VERY important and most people who shoot are involved with that on a day to day basis, even if they don't consider they are. Wind drift, drop, grouping, ammo selection etc etc are all part of that. If you want to get serious and very accurate, then you have to get VERY technical, ask your average country shooter or sniper about technicalities and analysing shooting, and you will find most actually do more of that than shooting itself! I agree that assessing the shot is critical but over analysing a shot or -

Don't fall into the trap of which one is better VM. Have you seen the guy martin program where it's an F1 car vs a superbike? That is the .22 vs .177 cal debate all over, where really, they aren't meant to be compared. If the bike and the car had the same energy it may have been nearer the .177, .22 debate, but they didn't, so I don't see your analogy. -
First off I don't like packages, because they never offer what I want. I would rate the Tikka top, then Howa. However, this isn't for me its for you, and frankly I'd give serious consideration to the 770.

Someone owe you money, the Mossberg are well known for blowing hinges off doors!

It's down to the individual, but this is my personal, professional and factual response. 455 Synthetic American. You have no need to worry about HOT barrels on a HMR, its almost impossible, even on the range. Neither do you need it for accuracy, and neither do you need to lug around a heavy lump of metal for field work. Synthetic rather that wood simply for weather versatility, it does help! If you want to cart around a heavy Varmint, then fine, some like heavy guns (lord knows why for field work) but you will get no accuracy advantages from it and you may be too exhausted to

The facts and physics are indisputable, despite the obvious unscientific manner of the video! Just the same you are talking circa 10% variations, if you find a pellet you get on with then fine, go for it. -

Indeed, always interesting to see someone do it, but this information is already in the public domain...and I thought quite well known! -
February, a few years back, fertilised females that had survived the winter were waking up in a school gym and causing concerns. They insisted I went even though I told them what I thought was happening, and there would basically be FA I could do about it if I was right!

Usually get the odd call when they start waking up, then the odd call when the mortar bees start, but not often much general action on proper nests until mid-late summer, then through to early autumn!
