Probably get sent to Oz, you are only permitted to hunt pigs with dogs here, I just found out yesterday after 45 years hunting, lol.

Scottish deerhound or English deerhound
Aussie Whip replied to Jude85's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
The Oz staghounds to me have a sort of feral wildness to them but they are very gentle dogs, much more than most hounds, except the deerhound. They are the Aussie bush dog and can catch anything from rabbits to pigs and have heard of them working cattle and scrub bulls. It would be a shame if they lost the essence of what they are. -

I agree but they are adding other breeds to improve the staghound for pig hunting, slowing it down and making it a bit tougher for the job and losing the speed, temperament and off duty, soft nature the staghound is known for. They should never recognize the staghound as a pure bred, just keep them all hound and keep working them. -

I had the whippets with staghound in them and they had great bush sense, good feet and prey drive. You would be hard pressed to find a staghound over here that is just deerhound/greyhound these days. With pig hunting the big thing over here other breeds such as bull and cattle dog, Dane and mastiff have been added to most staghound lines. If I was looking for the old type I'd go to the wheatbelt in SA where they are still mostly used on fast game. There have been guys crossing the deerhound and grey trying to reproduce the original but you can't replicate that 200 or more years of breeding wor -

We call them staghounds over here. Good cross but hardly a new one. -
Yeah I noticed it with the whippet bitches and remembered a lot of female athletes don't cycle due to being overly fit/thin. Seems all bitches are similar .
-
What I've seen, don't work them for a couple of months before you intend to breed them so they get a bit of body fat on them? I'd like to hear other ideas on this if I'm wrong.
-
I've noticed the pups seem to be more leggy with the grey as the dam. This is greys I've seen crossed with bull or cattle dogs, not sure about terriers.
-
Some whippets seem to come on when it suits them. I had one who could go nearly 12 months then another time 5 months. When they were working a lot of the time they seemed to miss cycles, I thought maybe because of little body fat?

Looking for Bedlington Whippet breeders
Aussie Whip replied to Oscar Bellville's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
The bitch is nice mate -
My male Parson doesn't bark at nothing but he barks at everything, so what he's bred to bark. That cnt shouldn't own a terrier, or any dog, let alone judge them. Hope his place gets rat infested and he dies of Lepto

He won't be able to disappear over here these days with fckwit book and other social media garbage.

Sorry about Buck, Ray. I think just spend as much time as you can with your dog, everyone knows how much you care for him and that he has had a better life than most dogs. When my best dog got sick I had to leave her in the vets as she couldn't even keep water down but I just wanted to take her home and spend her last days with her but wasn't to be.
-
Weren't they always used as a general purpose vermin dog rather than a dedicated earth dog? Mainly rabbiting from a couple of old 1800's dog books I have.
-
I had muscovies and the shed was concrete and the large run was grass but not for long, it ended up just mud. I think the best if you just have a few is free range them if you have a big yard. I wouldn't bother again as they are filthy birds and not worth the return for the effort.

I wouldn't think you need a working Bedlington as a cross for rabbits, most whippet crosses are decent. I always wanted to put my parson Russell over a whippet but in reality for rabbits I think the cross would be a bit overkill and more difficult to control. You just don't need hard dogs for rabbiting.
-
That's a cross I'd like to own but I've never heard of a litter in Oz. The only beddies over here are show type but I do know one guy who shows and ferrets with his.

The bloke I got my American Bulldog off was into working pure Deerhounds and Ridgebacks, he'd run them together on all fast game and pigs and was very successful.
