You need to match your choice of bird to the quarry you have available on your permission rather than simply a bird you fancy getting. As a starter a harris hawk or a redtail is a good choice as both will take fur and feather if trained properly. You really want to get a bird of the year so you can train it from scratch yourself rather that potentially risk buying someone elses problem cast off. Not all second hand birds are dodgy but as a beginner you might not be able to spot problems until they manifest themselves and by which time you could well end up hurt especially with a feisty redtail

Hi mate, one of the best ways to get experience in Falconry and Birds of prey in general in voluntary work, is it a centre you are going out hunting with? if so its maybe worth asking them if they are looking for any weekend help, alot of them are glad of it, be prepared to start at the bottom though mucking out cleaning etc it wont all be flying and handling birds but what you will pick up along the way will amaze you, there are other things you may want to consider aswell such as the LANTRA beggining falconry award which if a complete novice will give you a sound knowlege base on general bir

No, really, you didn't take the advice given, you completely disregarded it and potentially put the life of your animal in danger, you were strongly advised to seek vetinary help, you didn't even ring the vet, you simply decided it would all be ok in the morning, and luckily it seems it was. Whether you are 16 or 60, if you are in the position where you have concern enough to ask here for advice, and that advice is to get the dog to the vet, and you choose not to, then you can't expect any help in the future really can you? On a personal level, am I included in the "wankers and toss

Lost my gwp last yr to bloat You have a very short window time wise to get them to the vet. Unfortunately mine was with my ex and he rang to say the dogs being weird.. hes jumping about and rolling around and stretching and digging damn big holes in the garden what shall I do? I sent them to the vets and they got there about 45 mins after the symptoms started and he collapsed and died on the surgery floor You DONT have time to sit there pondering sorry but its that serious.. Good luck

It'd be a bit like buying a thoroughbred racehorse after having been to a riding school twice lol Theres an awful lot more to falcons and a lot of land with the appropriate quarry is essential. As ive said though nothing is impossible but support is paramount or you'll simply end up chasing it across potentially mile upon mile of land in pursuit of the bird. There's making the falcon to a hood & lure work to learn too. Plenty of people will have started off with one and im far from in a position to say whether you should or shouldnt get one but im all honesty I feel you'd learn a lot more

Hi Charlie.. The moult is a period of the year when a captive bred bird is put away to moult its feathers and grow new ones for the following season. An 'imprint' or 'to imprint' is the method of rearing any animal to be extremely tame. In birds of prey the method is pretty standard practise in owls to tame them sufficiently to be able to handle and work with them. Breeders imprint falcons and Goshawks too so they are more easily accepting of methods used to artificially inseminate. The relationship with an imprinted bird is quite different in so much as they start to see you as an equal

Quick tip for those of you who might want to use the train.. Always get in the carriage allocated for wheelchair users. If no wheelchair users are aboard you can sit in a seat with bags of room for the dog to lay down and if the seats becomes needed theres still more room by the other seats Plus theres usually a loo in that carriage too lol

Thanks Millet & Jasper The Saker is a great bird to fly but its rather like flying a WW2 bomber lol She's funny as hell to watch and doesnt shut up from the moment of casting to the moment she lands on her lure!! She has the turning circle of a LWB Landrover!! Shes always got that 'Im such a clever bird attitude on' too lol She doesnt go far & always has an eye open for the lure lol She spends most of her time with her upside down head on lol and has no nastiness about her. Just a shout and she comes back. She'll hopefully produce some nice babies from our Tiercel

Im assuming you're in the UK Guy?.. Well you dont need a licence.. If you're in the USA theres different rules and you'd need to approach the state dept. for their regs and go from there and they're then restricted to the type of birds allowed for a beginner. Although not a total no no you'll find unless you've a mega close support network and preferably a good mentor a falcon and a Gos are not generally recommended for beginners. Harris hawks, Redtails are usually the way to go. You need to look at the land available to you and the quarry it holds and match up the most suitable bird for the

My son (12) is reasonably keen but prefers football lol and my daughter (11) is right into it and is a natural handling the birds.

Perfect considering your circumstances as was explained to you on the other forum Thanks, Kat. Just looking for some other opinions really. Ok i'll rephrase it for you.. Perfect considering your circmstances as I suggested to you before! Wasnt sure if you realised I was the same person that had already answered your pm to myself on another forum Just reiterating the suggestion! All the suggestions you get are worthy of consideration just go with something that suits both the required job and fits in with your familys capability and your training ability;)

This is a problem with so many 2008 hh's still for sale. Ive M & F sibling CR hh's left and im loathed to let them go cheaply for fear of attracting the wrong buyer but I need to sell them. They are quiet and perfectly well balanced and as with most CR you can do anything with them. Their sadly not in as good a feather as I would have liked but the move didnt suit but im perfectly honest about them.. they're not rough by any stretch just a little less that perfect.. Sooo do I alter my price to reflect this and again attract a bargin hunter or do I hang on to them and continue the good die

let him have a bath on a day you can sit him out on his bow and it'll loosen a lot off.. then fill a bowl with cool water and dip the tail in and work it gently of course you need to be doing this in the morning to allow plenty of drying time unless you can box him up overnight after.

Dawns right there but there's a gadget that you can use that'll get it looking a bit more uniform. Its basically a stripping comb but if you use it like a normal comb rather than the way you'd strip the coat.. This is the blue one and they do one in red for finer coats.. I do my Patterdale with the blue http://www.bestpetpharmacy.co.uk/detailed_...uct.asp?id=1890
