  1. One of my hawks caught one last year and carried it up onto a barn roof where she sat with it for ages trying to rip the skin open. Now bearing in mind the feet & beak on a hawk and shes a good hunter, it was a mammoth task for her to get into it properly. Eventually and most unusually for a bird of prey she got bored lol and she let it go and it rolled down the roof and she flew to me. I went over to take a look at it and it stunk!! Now I dont know if all moles smell so putrid and it was most definately fresh but theres no way i'd eat one after that lol If its not good enough for my hawk

  8. Nice bird Tony.. Heres a pic of our tiercel..
  9. Hi.. another couple of things for you to consider are how you are going to feed the bird. Most people buy in frozen and add caught rabbits etc as a perk of hunting. You can buy the frozen chicks, quail and hamsters easily but you'll need a freezer to store them in. Also an avian vet.. this is a bird specialist as you dont want to be going to the local 'dog doctor' with a sick bird as he/she simply wont have the training and you're running a huge risk of failing to get a fast & correct diagnosis.
  10. Until the fox is 'disposed of' i'd be inclined to bring my bird in and box it up over night.

    hi new to this site

Hi there Phill... nice to see you here
  12. Im really sorry you feel like that but your posts title suggested you'd a problem and were seeking advise. Im also sorry you chose to misinterpret my advise. It wasnt sarcastically made and it was in no way meant to show you up.. you obviously dont actually want peoples advise as much a you want your careless accident justified.. I apologise
  13. Potential accident waiting to happen If you'd got your bird back under control on your glove and had your dog beside you you'd have prevented that even being a possibility. Dont mean to sound harsh but a situation has now occured and resulted in the innocent dog being hurt.
  14. Hi Gilly, its hard to fit life in these days let alone a bird thats going to rely and depend on you 24/7 etc. But I can understand the fact that you would really like a bird. There's been some good suggestions and some thoughtless comments lol but what you really need right now is experience. I suggest you keep reading as much as possible and asking as many questions as you need answered and try and get yourself some weekend/holiday work at a centre or hook up with an experienced practising falconer and do some grovelling in the hope that what you put in might be rewarded with him/her ment
  15. the father i know kiwi, belongs to a lad called peter the mother im not sure about alothought the sire is linked to the mustwork kennels, the bitch i wouldnt know its possibly misty, though im not a 100% Gary the Hapsberg affix is Clare and Lee sharp.. she was Wassetwire with her late husband Nigel. They have close lines that both go back to Dianas early stock. The sire did well in the show ring and I stood behind them many times lol
  16. theres many schools of thought on it. A weimeraner study showed that raised bowls only increased bloat in animals that had already had suffered from it. Its not just a feeding issue tho as something as simple as the dog jumping off a sofa could cause the twist too. Of course in the wild they dont have bowls and they tear meat often whilst lying down so the other recommendation of no bowl just putting the food on the ground for the dog to hoover up will also help prevent gulping..

    Whistle?

he wont always be 16Wks!What does your mentor suggest? Look forward to hearing how you get on anyway.
  18. Kat

    Whistle?

a refs one as I suggested or something totally different to the one used for your dog.. Assuming you use or intend to use a dog.

    Whistle?

Hmm normal dog? lol Anyway.. I use my voice to call the bird and whistle with my lips. If I used a dog whistle my dog would be even more baffled but if you must add another whistle to your outfit try something as different as possible to the one you use for your dog.. Perhaps a referee one. Usually my hunting bird has one eye on my whereabouts and a quick flash of a chick leg brings her to me.
  20. we're having dreadful wind too but my fhh buzzes in it. She does get a bit naughty and just plays up high soaring and messing about but im not complaining.. Maybe it'd annoy me if she was my only bird. Tend not to risk the youngsters and the falcons and the owls just look horrified at the thought! Like Wag ive other things to amuse me. Ratting with my Patterdale is current favourite!
  21. Its also advisable to place the feed bowl up off the floor. I use a plastic wastepaper basket and the bowl sits nicely in, but there are purpose built metal hoops that take the bowl. Mine cost 79p in a cheapy shop tho lol I sadly lost one of my wirehaired pointers recently due to bloat and its really really horrible.
  22. I have both but being a short @rse the bag is a nuisance as it hangs too low and gets caught on gates etc. You can see in the pic <<<< that I have to have the strap so tight to raise the bag its more of a wonder bra than a hawking bag! Have got kids size bag strap on it too My vest is my hawking handbag I only ever use the bag now for when i'm training birds. Only thing the bag was good for out hunting was sitting on lol
