  1. Im with Grovsey on this.. this is a grim time of year when many many people announce they're getting a bird, have no mentor, no experience not even been out with anyone in the depth of winter to get hands on.. By the Christmas the questions start.. Its noisy, It wont come back, its screaming, it wont chase rabbits and on and on... Knowing what to do is one thing but knowing how to get the results is another but the best gift to have is the one that can fix problems and that will only ever come from proper experience Dont run before you can walk as you'll be letting not just yourself down but
  2. I feed my ferrets by playing a certain song on my mobile! They always know food is there so when they're underground I can play it and out they scurry

    plucking feathers

boredom... habit... boredom... habit... boredom.. are possibilities. Have you looked for critters in its feathers (mites) is it in good feather? Can you tell us about the way the bird has been bred, how long you've had it and the age it was when you took it on. Also the way its housed now and how its accomodation is situated on your property in relation to your house and other gardens etc? What training have you been doing and how much time daily are you spending with it?
  4. LOL yes me!!! But you know that ! When are you two coming round for supper then?
  5. Have you come to the safety of here after the bashing you took on IFF? lol Ooooh I smelt it coming!!!! Nice to see your first post is a little more realistic on here Sorry I dont live nearer or i'd have helped you out a bit I really think you need to get a few things in place including land and permission and experience before you even start fretting about what bird you might fancy.. HH's a useful bird and will go on for many a year improving providing you do too.. please dont look at one as a step up to something better or more 'cool'.
  6. Omelette imprint fhh only has to be in a room containing a hood and she turns into an upside down handbag creature and wants to kill lol I have made other hh's I lived with to the hood and in some cases its been a relief and some it just didnt work for. My Mrt has a hood for the hunting season only and that works well for me too. It requires patience and calmness and some people just dont have that 'thing' naturally! I'd say have someone show you exactly how to do it till you're confident then go for it.. you just dont know one day it might be really useful and if not nice one but at least you

    Beginner

You'll need to consider the land you will have to legally hunt on and the quarry within it. No point in considering anything until you can answer your own question

I didnt quote you lol I quoted lady rossella lol Do keep up hehehehe

    my new bird,

The birds talons will resemble a bull terriers toe nails after a 200 mile walk on concrete , give the bird to someone who knows what he is doing and for fooks sake get a differant mentor . With respect, please dont quote me when you post as I made my comment politely and with respect and dont want my comments muddled with your negative ones

    my new bird,

I'd be inclined to put some carpet down or a large piece of astroturf on the slabs He only has to bate badly or land awkward and his keel will be smack down on concrete

    training

Dont know your age but try to imagine trying to explain to someone everything they need to know about learning to drive a car well and safely on an internet forum.. and supposing I dont hold the wheel the same was as say Jasper?? How will you know as a beginner if it matters or not? So... a mentor is got as your driving instructor. Someone with experience and someone you trust and like and someone to teach you. Dont cherry pick ideas stick to one method. Books will help you with other aspects and tips like your highway code book and always be a good reference but a real person with a proven s

Hi hun!!! Must do coffee soon and further our convo regarding most men are total pigs lol

  20. You could of course join a club and get a mentor/mate/local falconer to let you observe & tag along through the split year of moult where there isnt much to do but you'd be able to learn lots and get making some equipment and the hunting months where you could go out with him/her and learn some fieldcraft and get a feel of it better. You could perhaps ferret for someone.. It'll all be good practise to collect providing the person you go out with knows his onions, and not all do lol One day your circumstances may change and at least you'd have an idea about the time involved in it all.
  21. You'll never have a fit bird and you'll never do it justice sadly. If it were a needs must scenario its a bit more acceptable till you're lifestyle changed but to take one on and know you'll be unable to do it justice is a bit like getting a puppy when everyones out all day.
  22. I've been looking into this for a while and much of it depends on so many variables that it seems impossible to put a fixed sum to it, but as an idea: Bird: £150 to well, the sky is literally the limit. Mews/Aviary: Depends on the bird and your DIY ability £200+ Telemetry: £500 new Dog/Ferrets: again depends on the bird, the style of hunting that you want to do and what you've already got. Freezer: £150 Scales: £20 Bow Perch: £50 Bath: £25 Hawking Vest/Bag: £30+ Glove: £25+ Misc Equipment (creance, lure etc): £100+ Whiskey for the landowners at Christmas: £50+ Time lost at wor
