That’s a lovely bit of kit that mate.

I had a wild urge to own a jag a few years back simply because I’d never had one, nothing as top end as that XK, so I bought an XJR which are a lot of car for absolutely no money.

White leather interior, the nice wheels and all that old bollocks......brought it home and said to the old woman “I got you a present outside” all pleased as punch with myself.

She took one look and said “white leather interior !......we have 4 kids you idiot!”

I enjoyed it for a few months anyway. Lol

I probably didnt fully appreciate the history to it at the time i just got caught up in the whole " Englishness " of it....it had been built at the factory in Coventry i forget what its called now and the old boy who owned it had worked in the offices there and owned it right up till he died in the late 90,s....left it to his son and i bought it from there but at one point i was driving up and down to away games with all West Ham scarves hanging off it....certainly raised some eyebrows ?

White interior is never a good look but i like them big XJR,s they have the big v8 that they used in the Scorpion tanks if im not wrong.....big fast cars, this one i had was plenty fast enough it could do 130+ it just took all morning to get there and all aftenoon to stop again with them old drum brakes !.....it was certainly a lovely motor though just in the wrong hands at the time thats all.

Lovely bit of history and as you say, it just has “British-ness” written all over it.

Yeah, the XJR is a beast of a car mate, good fun for a few grand.

I always liked big chunks of motor, imho it’s where Merc went wrong trying to build all silly little “family car” models.....back in the day they made dirty great chunks of iron and did it well.

To be fair, in the UK people can enjoy top quality motors cheap.....I mean you can pick up an old S500 or even 600 for buttons and that was a hundred grand car new.

been offerd this for 1200 ..s-l1600.jpg

Good cars

I had a 2.5 petrol manual 4wd for 4yrs. I was advised to avoid the 2.0 diesel automatic.

If you go to look at one, check underneath for rust and, make sure that the body panels have all of their fixings.

They're surprisingly small inside but, very comfortable on long journeys.

If you get a warning light on the dash, don't take it to Jaguar - I was told that the multitude of sensors are on a ring and, if one picks up a fault, it can kick off false error codes from the sensors after it.

Jaguar have 'fitters' that'll keep replacing parts and charging you for it until they get it right.

......... you need a proper mechanic to clear all of the fault codes then drive it until the light comes back on - this will usually then give you the correct diagnosis.

Mine did well - it was a 2003 and, it kept sailing through MOTs.

It only really cost me on an ABS fault and tyres.

I’d like my old Healy 3000 back , but doubt I could afford it now ...even a couple of the old escorts wouldn’t be bad , the money they make is ridiculous ..

Get ready if you have a stash as I would suggest a rather significant recession is incoming and the first and worst hit items are classic cars, if it’s a choice of the roof over your head and a shiny lump of metal sat in the garage the cars a goner, but they will recover and increase rapidly afterwards ?

Didn’t want to piss on your fire but as wilf,s done it already, sold one with low miles on and a new ticket a while back for £500 because a dash light came on, still ran and drove fine and would have been a nice ride for a year even if you never switched the light off ?

Like I said in the other thread on old cars, you could still out run the police in them days and the mk2 jag was probably the most famous getaway car of all, father in law had an XJS many moons back was the big5.3 beastie horrible thing really but the kick down on it was bonkers mind you the fuel gauge moved almost as fast as the Rev counter, once bought two goats from Glastonbury and drove home with them stuffed in the back seat shitting like machine guns all the way back ??

I'm surprised Gansher. I thought that you'd have gone for the saloon version. More room in the boot for the swag. Must have had a few fun rides with the Sweeney's 3 litre Granada on your tail ?

I had three Beetles, three MGBs, a Triumph 2000, a Triumph 2500TC and this.......

The car I really wanted was a VW Karmann Ghia. Even plod on a push bike could catch one of those but what styling. A poor man's Porche - literally.

Thing with cars is, once you have had a few drives you get bored with them.

The only thing I never got bored with was my Land Rover Defender.

I used to work for a Rover Triumph dealer. We got the police 2.5PI and the Rover V8S and latterly the SDI 3500 in for service and repair. On a Saturday, when the garage side was closed and just the sales room open I got chance to drive them around the 1/2 acre gravelled car park. Drifting three and a half litre cars sideways round the corners  ?
