Thing with cars is, once you have had a few drives you get bored with them.

The only thing I never got bored with was my Land Rover Defender.

If your getting bored you ain't driving them hard enough ??

I used to work for a Rover Triumph dealer. We got the police 2.5PI and the Rover V8S and latterly the SDI 3500 in for service and repair. On a Saturday, when the garage side was closed and just the sales room open I got chance to drive them around the 1/2 acre gravelled car park. Drifting three and a half litre cars sideways round the corners  ?

That’s the thing, cars are nice to have a play with but after that they are all much of a muchness.

Years back I raced one of the older style Sierra Cosworth (big whale tale) down the M25, I was driving a 911 3s  with my pal  and these two blokes pulled along side and was probably a bit pissed off to see a couple of kids in this thing......so they give it all the big one and of course being a couple of oiks off the plot we was well up for all that.

Absolutely left that Cozzy for dead, we was crying with laughter........and that’s the thing about nice old cars, they give you good old memories ;)

The biggest town around here is Angouleme and every September they have a three day vintage car rally. First day is the concourse, second day, Saturday, is when they all drive around the department, hundreds of them from big Yank police cars to an Isetta Bubble Car. Imagine driving 150 miles in one of them. We usually drive out to the route and have a picnic while watching them all go past. The third day is a street race around the old town. It is as close to the Italian Job as you will ever get. I went with my BIL and a pits ticket doesn't get you within 100 yards of the cars. It gets you into the pits, tripping up over mechanic's legs sticking out from under an old Bentley and being asked to push start a Bugatti. When the cars go to line up they have to drive through the crowds and the only 'Elf 'n Safety is a bloke with a whistle. There were loads of Porches of every kind, all being driven by Nigels in colour co-ordinated overalls. In one class there were 11 Porches and a duck egg blue Mk. 1 Escort. A Repmobil from the 1970's. The old ford wiped the floor with the best of German engineering. It absolutely ran rings round them. Turned out it was a Lotus Escort. Apart from wheelarch bulges you wouldn't have known.

See that’s where they went wrong, the driving attire......you have to be in a Lacoste shirt that badly needs ironing, jeans and a pair of Doc Martin dealer boots (oxblood of course !) Lol

My BIL has one of those. He drives it up an old cart track to his allotment and carries his spade, rake and loads of other rammel in the boot. Then on a Friday night he washes it, cleans out the interior ready for shoot day on Saturday's where he has a gun.

I'm surprised Gansher. I thought that you'd have gone for the saloon version. More room in the boot for the swag. Must have had a few fun rides with the Sweeney's 3 litre Granada on your tail ?

I had three Beetles, three MGBs, a Triumph 2000, a Triumph 2500TC and this.......

The car I really wanted was a VW Karmann Ghia. Even plod on a push bike could catch one of those but what styling. A poor man's Porche - literally.

? I cant stand people that stereotype !

One worth getting in the present for the future for a person who has somewhere to store one is the Alfa Brera I think. The only car that I wanted and could afford but never got around to buying. Came close twice. 1st time test drove one and a Mazda RX8 but the Mazda won hands down. The next time was a choice between the Alfa and Mk2 Audi TT, once again the Alfa lost out. The reason being, apart from build quality issues is that they handle like a canal boat. The reason that I have always wanted one is that in my opinion they are one of the best looking cars ever made.

I could not live with driving a Brera every day and only ever keep one car at a time but if I were to keep a recent car as a toy or investment then it would be a Brera. I spotted a low millage example on an internet search this week with the 1.7 bio petrol engine that in a moment of madness I may have been tempted buy but luckily it has mat grey paint. Why  would anyone put that colour or paint on such a pretty a car? If I did get one it would need to be red, possibly black and shiny.

Lovely bit of history and as you say, it just has “British-ness” written all over it.

Yeah, the XJR is a beast of a car mate, good fun for a few grand.

I always liked big chunks of motor, imho it’s where Merc went wrong trying to build all silly little “family car” models.....back in the day they made dirty great chunks of iron and did it well.

To be fair, in the UK people can enjoy top quality motors cheap.....I mean you can pick up an old S500 or even 600 for buttons and that was a hundred grand car new.

Oh well we are poles apart there then mate ive never fancied any of the German cars the ol woman had a nippy little one a few years ago but even the amg,s just dont appeal to me at all im not snobby when it comes to cars at all but i do like a car to have some character about it i suppose it stems from when you are young we always want something we cant have ? then eventually i was lucky enough to be shown round the Maranello Factory in Italy and i just fell in love....everything from the smell of the interiors, the sound of the exhaust note.....the only trouble was i was too f****n big and fat to fit in them so opted for the nearest thing i always describe them as a gentlemans boy racer but theres nothing comes close for me....the pal of mine with the Jag has a brilliant collection of motors but he doesnt drive them,to people like that its all about the key fob and having a nice ornament to impress whereas for me its all about the driving experience i want to abuse cars and get the full adventure of its capabilities not sit polishing them they are a hobby not an investment.
