You really think that gamesmanship isn’t part of the average top flight premier team ?

I would say ironically, Liverpool are masters of buying fouls. That’s not meant to be a dig mate , Just interested on your thoughts on it pal ! ?

I agree that there is gamesmanship in the PL. But my view is that the South Americans and Italians take it to a higher level in feigning injuries, play acting and inciting reactions from players that will get them booked or sent off. It goes well beyond buying fouls.

I thought Monterrey and Flamengos standard of defending was very good, I was impressed.

They were quick to close, aggressive, organised and their tackles were spot on.....then calm in possession to play out.

Liverpool absolutely have you in bits watching them knock the ball around in defence but they get away with it and fair play they have the confidence to play that way.

Was just listening to Souness talking on Sky about his time in Italy he said part of being " a good player " was whether you could get the opposition booked or sent off....and that was in the 80,s !....gamesmanship these days is certainly about more than just winning a free kick....its about gaining any possible advantage however small, even if its just putting the idea in the mind of the ref.

I have never bought into all this “players shouldn’t talk to the ref, just leave him to get on with it” stuff......I think it’s so, so important to let a ref know that you are paying as much attention to him as he is to you.

And yes, try and gain an edge with the ref over the other team.....all part and parcel like win the first header, hit them hard and win the first tackle, stick one on their mid field or defensive enforcer.

Sport is always about the mind as well as the body

Can't take anything away from Liverpool, they are doing everything right. They've outcitied Man City. Great football. Well done you scouse b*****ds.?

On the subject of gamesmanship, imo, the dirtiest player in the Premier league is Fabhino of Man City. Breaks up attacking moves by fair means but usually foul and then proclaims his innocence like an accomplished actor. Hardly ever gets booked. He is the modern day Billy Bremner or Graeme Souness but with the ability of not getting caught.

I've got the black tie on after Man U's performance today, but fair play to Nigel Pearson, I don't think he ever got the credit for building that title winning Leicester Premiership winning team.Twat!

Do you blame the play actors or the rule changes that facilitate such soft fouls, soft cards and soft sendings off ?

I  honestly don't know what the rules are now. One the one hand you don't get the assasins of old, ( Trevor Hurlock and co) but the new rules have  almost stooped football being a contact sport. I think ex pros should be offered careers in refereeing. They know instinctively when a tackle is legitimate or filthy. Perhaps they should have a say in devising the  rules  and reviewing the rules too. At the moment the guys making the rules have little or no background in the game.
