So, Tell Us, What Are Ye All At In The Veg Garden?
jok replied to JohnGalway's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
Well son, as it happens, I've jus t been gifted a greenhouse from MattyG on here, which to my astonishment has gone back together ok, and will be putting tomato, cucumber and chilli plants in next week. So I guess the answer from me is, go for it. The least you can end up with are green toms and you can make some chutney. Nice addition to my allotment Terry which was stonewalled originally because of glass. I'm eating like a king at the moment and no sign yet of the dreaded. Jok. -
One Walkie talkie ffs. Must be great conversation with yourself lol. Jok.

Lamper121. If it's a help to you mate, I have a proper whetstone in the workshop which has been sharpening plane blades, chisels and goodness what else for quite some time. These are timeless and only need the knowhow to use them. For postage it's yours pal. Jok.

Tiercel. We don't even mention the word b----t down our allotments. We are virtually clear of it. Our biggest problem by far, as regards veg, is that dreaded little brown grub which decimates the onions. I've 2 beds, near enough 120 plants which are curled up like with he's fingernails. Last year it got in the leeks as well. New spuds are eating very nice, maybe I already said, Arran Pilot. Everything salad being eaten on a daily basis so all good. Jok. -

No TC. Not meant in anyway controversial. I only say what my head thinks and hope that it helps folks. I agree totally about doing your own thing and finding ways of successfully growing vegetables. This is, without doubt, the longest thread on the forum and I for one hope that continues. Any help, from any member, is gratefully accepted. Hope that clears that up. Jok. -

Yes looks good. Nice to have someone else do the growing for you. Thought the whole idea was to do your own ffs. I think it's all changing and to be honest garden centres have made life easier. Going back to beetroot, I always set a reasonably thin row and have baby beets when about 1.1/2" round so thinning out allowed for a good 6/8 weeks growing and always end up with a good crop. I tried parsnip plugs which looked superb and became the laughing stock at show time. Shrivelled up with about 7/8 curly roots. Horrible. Never again. All in all, this season, I'm chuffed to bits with almost everyt -
Surely the Army and Navy guys would have the best smocks available so try the A & N stores. Just a thought. Jok.

What a load of bollocks. That is definitely not the way to go. Modules are for gardeners who really don't know what it's about. For a start off, root crops such as carrot and parsnip, will split and curl. Horrible when you think you have a good crop. Can't deny that brassicas are a good way to go in modules but trust me on one thing, you will have more failures than success. Again harbinger of doom. Jok. -

For what it's worth I'll add a comment. I get loads of spent hops and malted barley from our local brewer. As a soil conditioner it is fantastic. Setting up a couple of raised beds as described, I mixed my own compost with a bag of multi and hops. The compost admitadly was 2 or 3 years old but end result is very good. You can sow straight away with just about anything and bearing in mind we are just into June, the growing season is at it's best. You have 16 weeks or slightly more to create, cultivate, sow and grow any number of lovely vegetables. Personally, as some on here know, I set really -
Wish I had your talent but I haven't so I'll stick to wood. Every knive I see on our forum is a joy to look at. You guys are good. Jok.

Well guys. As predicted a week ago. 3 tops dug and plenty new potatoes for 6 dinners. Fantastic. Down side as well though. The onion plants that Tony gave me have all curled so can only assume that dreaded FCKG brown grub. Luckily I've 3 different lots, set at different dates, and also some sets put in 2 weeks ago and some plants to put in next week. It must be said that everything else, at the moment, is looking good. Hope you are doing well. Jok.a -
Back to a sunken container with beer slops. Works every time. Jok.

Eh up Devon. How are you pal?. Same as usual this end and everything looking rosy. Took on another bit of ground with the intention of a poly tunnel but if you've followed the posts the FCKG thing went with H. Rosie. All good though and like many on here I struggle with pics so be patient and they'll be forthcoming. Hope everyone is well. Jok. -
WK. I'm thinking of letting on how it was done back when but I reckon these young lads would not believe a word. What do you think?. Jok.

So you want to become a poacher ffs. There's guys on here will sort you out pal. Get on the big fellas with an aluminium tray, a kleek and a good torch. That gets the blood boiling. Ask W Katchum. Lol.

Roofing sheets are what I use. Have a look on the net. Also, thinking about it a little, pop rivets would perhaps be the way to go. I might have a play with one myself. Jok.
