The UK, Germany and France have the same rate of tax: https://tradingeconomics.com/country-list/personal-income-tax-rate France does not have a state funded health service like the UK does. You get basic cover out of your taxes then have to pay extra top ups if you want better treatment. The basic treatment does not pay for cosmetic stuff like you can get in the UK and you are at the back of the queue when it comes to things like knee replacements. Quite often patients get bills because the basic cover does not cover costs of the treatment required. First thing they ask for when you chec

I don't know what your history is gnasher, but I have seen and dealt with people who just do not conform to the theory that they can be educated or lead out of poverty. They are born takers (or users) and will exploit anything that they perceive to be a weakness in charitable help. I've been in houses where the Father has spent hundreds on cannabis production whilst the kids existed in less than squalor. I've seen addicts and alcoholics making demands to Social Services for extra payments supposedly for the children's welfare and then blow all the money on their addiction. There is a different

The system changed to allow people with no means of supporting themselves to opt for full time unemployment. If want a car you have to be able to afford it and the running costs. If you want a kid the State will pay for it. For generations single women have been bringing up kids whilst doing part-time work and / or with help from relatives and friends. Now they put on the 'Full-Time Mum' badge and we all should understand.

Like you I was often involved at the front end and have struggled to find suitable solutions to the problem long term. There are a lot of factors that add to the problem and some of these factors were brought in to solve one problem and caused another. Example; giving single mothers priority on the housing list. Unwanted result is that many single girls see getting pregnant as being rewarded with a short cut to social housing. Child benefit payments were also seen as an easy way to obtain extra money. That has been reined in a bit now though. But people who are long-term unemployed should not

A few photos of the Berlingo Dangel 4X4. First impressions are that it doesn't look much different from the standard Berlingo Multispace. The ground clearance however is the clue. Standard five seater with the rear seats folding over against the front seats so there is loads of room for the dog cage and mole trapping stuff. I've gone all modular with this one and stacked crates and buckets with the minimum stuff I will need. I only work around three days a fortnight so I'll be able to quickly lift the trapping stuff out and get my fishing gear in there once the lock down is lifted. -
If the trap is set light and is getting set off without catching you might have mice coming in before the rats arrive.

Exactly what I did. Sprayed the hibernating flies in the roof space with shop bought fly spray and haven't seen them since.

I was sorting out my tackle box the other day. Took me ages........... ?

I'll be lighting up in about 45 minutes. Got some really rough pork mince that I normally use for meatballs. This time it is going to be used for pork, apple and leek burgers. Home made chips, par boiled then fried over the charcoal after coating in duck fat, home made BBQ beans using tomato puree, smoked paprika, a touch of hot chilli pepper, a bit of chorizo, a few lardons, minced onions and garlic and some pre-cooked white beans. I've sliced half an onion, sprinkled salt, pepper, and garlic powder over then wrapped it all up in a foil parcel to go on the griddle. And some of those burger bu

Put the egg(s) in a shallow pan, add a splash of white vinegar and half fill the pan with boiling water from the kettle. Turn the heat on and after a minute lift the egg(s) out with a slotted spoon. Once the water is approaching simmer carefully crack the eggs one at a time and gently pour them from the shell into the water. They shouldn't spread much and will cook through evenly. Take them out just after you see the yolk skin over with a white film.

Keep your eye on Charlie Windsor and his eldest son. I don't trust that American bitch.

It was the front of the chassis that had corroded around the steering mounts. Over here I see many much older Berlingos and Partners running around and there are some on the free ads sites with 400,000km on them. No salt on the roads out here. -
There are some rivers and lakes that seem to have different strains to others, even with barbel and other species. There is a river that I used to fish that is tiny compared to the Trent, Severn and Ouse. Even the classic Yorkshire rivers dwarf this one yet there are barbel in the river well over 16lb and there are quite a few different specimens over 14lb and they are all caught within a 3 mile stretch of the river. That stretch used to be controlled by a WMC angling section and back in the 1970's they stocked it with barbel. Only from there for a few mile downstream are the big ones found an

Most countries seem to have adopted the Lock Down approach to try and lessen the numbers requiring hospitalisation and avoid hospitals becoming swamped. During the early period there was no blueprint and no way of knowing what was best. As time goes on we learn from others who are further along the track. Also, in the last few weeks the Government have had time to increase hospital capacity and bring in more short term staff. Time will tell whether the Dutch / Swedish approach of building up herd immunity quickly will be better than the managed Lock Down. But at the moment the people who

A few of my customers used a product called 'Cluster Buster' found on Amazon. They all recommended it.

I agree with you. Before I joined aged 31 I'd been a Production Controller at a textile mill, a Relief Manager at Currys and worked in a car salesroom, plus a few years doorstep delivery so I'd experienced quite a bit of variety. But many of my colleagues had joined in their early 20's and some had come straight from school via the Cadet scheme. A lot of the newer senior officers were recruited on a fast track system straight from University. They hadn't a clue and yet within 6 or 7 years, none of which involved putting hands on collars, they were running departments larger than many local ind

Good news is that the pikies who have the garden opposite our house must have been caught at last. No BBQs for the last three days, no debris scattered about the green lanes where they have been ripping wood out of the hedgerows for their fires and none of their crap and used paper in the green lanes. Hopefully they will pi$$ off elsewhere once the lock down is lifted and the landlord can chuck them out.

Of the 16 who joined on my intake in 1987 eleven of us took a pay drop from our last jobs. I was a milkman, another was a plumber and there was one from the RAF amongst the group. Then when they told us that 11% was deducted at scource it became very difficult financially especially as you start on a low pay scale and it gradually increases over the first twelve years. The last changes I remember were the 2006 Act and that eroded pay scales even further and took away some of the perks such as the Rent Allowance and free meals when you were on training days. They then reviewed the position abou

I agree about the raising of retirement age for manual workers. It is short sighted and ultimately costly to the public purse. But if you want to pick a fight over the public service pensions that include the armed forces, civil servants and other employees then blame the Governments that you voted for. They brought in the schemes and anyone could apply for a job with a final salary pension. But, don't forget that there is a compulsory levy of 11% of every police officer's wages to contribute towards the pension and the wages don't compare to many other industries. They had to make the pension

If he was 'correct' in the days that he worked in the Met' he would have been amongst a very small elite. Most were more bent than the criminals.

I am not sure as there were changes to the Pension Agreement several times. If he was on the same scheme that I was on he would have retired aged 50 to 55, possibly a few years later if he was a senior officer and stayed on. But I don't know what the schemes were based on for bobbies starting in the 50's and 60's. When I left in 2011 I had almost done 25 years, but the final date for my service was based on the 55 year old age limit. So I retired at midnight as I became 55. The police woman I worked with was 33 and had already done 12 years, yet she still had to do more years than I had
