  1. There are breeds far more suited to make good rat hunting dogs as we know. Working bred terriers and whippets or small lurchers will nail many rats the larger or less mobile Stafford will miss. Another thing to consider is how and where you will be doing your rat hunting. If the dog's ability to use it's nose is important then a pure Stafford could, but not necessarily, be found lacking. I've seen a few that certainly caught rats. Even a couple of EBT bitches that belonged to a mates girlfriend at the time. I think the process of producing a ratter from this breed would be harder work than br
  2. Was that for workers or ribbon hunters, donny. Different times. When the white Russell types were being " smartened up ", the Sealyham influence being bred out, the Queen Anne legs being corrected, the working Lakeland blood being used . But, they were being used as working terriers still, that was the important thing. For work that required the correct Jack Russell way of going about things. True breeding types became established, more or less, that could win the rosette but still be dug to. Why ? Different times. Easier times.
  3. It has been said that some of the best working Russell blood left the UK and crossed the pond in the 1980's. A controversial subject in some circles. How was it possible for those men to meet the demand at the time without compromising quality ? Was it ethical ? Some people regard bloodlines as sacred and sharing them with strangers nothing short of sacrilege . The vast amounts of money reportedly changing hands at the time would appear to give credit to the disapproving that these men had sold out , quite literally. Looking at the dogs in the photographs the " type " seems to have been re
  4. I think I understand the point of the original thread. A person's credentials as a hunter being doubted on THL unless he/she backs the story up with photographic evidence ? But that suggests that the doubter is a stranger who doesn't know you. Why give a damn what someone who you have never met thinks ? Another aspect that has been mentioned are graphic images that will upset the people who hate the hunting life. Nothing illegal should be posted, nothing illegal should be practiced. Respect for the animals we hunt whether for pest control or food should always be the number 1 priority equal t
  5. Yeah,..seen quite a few,...I think George Newcombe's out cross experiments, where he deliberately put Border's and Lakeland's over his Bedlington Terriers, definitely improved the contemporary, Bedlington terrier coat.. Mind you, for a roustabout bush busting, terrier based rabbiter, I would prefer the harsh, crisp red pelt of the Irish Terrier/Running dog hybrids. Are you in cahoots with Glover Mr.Lloyd ? Barely a week goes by without him extolling the virtues of the Irish Terrier in TCW. Call me a cynic but I predict litters of a new Irish Terrier based strain of lurchers appeari
  6. Your own dog killing your own ferret isn't really an achievement. I would imagine it was an accident but still...shouldn't happen. Best of luck with her all the same.
  7. I think the people who would find the Irish potato joke funny wouldn't understand it anyway? What's red and invisible? No tomatoes
  8. Thinking about this I have found raises more questions than answers. It could be argued that Britain is not and never was a " country ". Long before the influx of peoples from around the old empire and more recent additions we have always been a mix. A mix of the Home Nations, some were/are not best pleased with being part of Britain. Personally I believe that we are better together than apart but many would disagree. I will give a few quotes from " the English and Their Country " by Thomas Burke. This was a handbook given to G.I.s to try and help them understand the " British " during their p

  10. Most dedicated breeders of parsons haven't got a clue about working terriers. There are plenty who think they do but from 1st hand experience they are clueless. Incidentally what do you class as a pure parson seeing as you put up a picture of a Howlbeck bred dog? Can I ask again who is he? and are you in Ireland? pm if preferred Thats a real good question ( whats a pure bred parson ?) what do you think would be classed as pure bred ? This is an interesting thread. At least no mad personal issues being thrashed out in public so far. I have quoted this post simply because it has to be o
  11. I rose to the bait p3d. But why put it in the water ? What are you wanting to catch ?
  12. If anyone was wanting to sound him out regarding his knowledge of the northern England working terrier types I would imagine he'll be officiating in some capacity at the DNWTC annual show in the coming weeks. He has since it's formation about 30 year ago and FMWTC before that. It's usually held in Blanchland these days, a small village just outside the M25
  13. A good point. Just because a dog has a KC cert and looks like a Labrador does not mean that it is a Labrador. Labs were developed as gun dogs as we all know and the qualities that they were selectively bred for just so happened to make them ideal pet dogs. But most now are so far removed from that, as regards intelligent selective breeding, that they are a different breed . I only say this because some of this breed that I've came across in recent years have been very dog aggressive. Not a trait that would be expected or tolerated in a gun dog breed but accepted by the modern owner/breeder.
  14. Hannibal, I find it a damned shame that you feel no longer willing to post. The whole snobbery thing with dogs, or life in general has always dumbfounded me. If you look at the Terrier and Lurcher sections on THL you will find people belittling all bushing dogs. Crazy. I don't often look at the hound or gundog sections but have experienced hunters of both types looking down on terriers and lurchers. And it goes on. More to do peoples lack of self worth than anything else I think. Saving an animal from being PTS is commendable in my opinion but giving it a good quality of life, getting her
  15. When I saw the title I had hoped that it was something to do with Drew Pritchard, the UK's leading architectural salvage dealer. But no, my mistake. Some useless shite making good money now though that we used to skip.
  16. If you found one good terrier dog from unknown breeding that did well, and then a bitch from unknown that did well, and so bred from them. And the resulting terriers where tried and proved good, so bred from. Is that not creating a line ? My question would be where did these dogs of unknown blood come from ? If they are any good probably from well bred stock a few generations back. Unless KC registered stuff. Then you would have something out of the ordinary. They didn't walk off the Ark.
  17. Well done Neil. Some much needed light relief I think. Nasty rather than quiet recently I would say. Debating good, arguing boring and a little bit unseemly on an open forum. I hope that comment doesn't upset anyone and start an argument. I didn't chance my arm because would needed to have cheated in order to get full points/pints. Could you help me out with Q.14 please and phonetically spell sionach? This is one of the many questions that I didn't know. The reason being March 17th is fast approaching and, being a plastic Paddy, I always meet up with like minded old friends on this date a
  18. Question 18 is proving to be a difficult one and it could be argued open to interpretation. How to or how not to end up in the divorce courts ?
  19. Shortly before you start to appreciate what you have, soon after you realise it's been taken for granted and about the same time that it dawns on you that they don't live long enough
  20. Ever considered applying for Mastermind and asking for terrier work as your specialist subject? That would put the fox among the chickens ☺
  21. Is it not just a matter of common sense ? Times have changed, or so it would seem, surely no one would keep an unfit dog and them expect it to perform straight out of it's kennel if and when the mood takes or opportunity arises ? Reading the stuff on here I would hope that people are more enlightened now. Some interesting analogies have been made. I knew a lad who was got knocked back from the Royal Marines because of fitness. Not failing training but not getting past selection. This kid held a title at the time. I forget what it was but something like Mr. UK. A body builder. He would not
  22. A KC Greyhound. Shares many of the correct show points with the KC Fox Terrier. Would you put money on it ?
  23. Mad4, take a look at Blaise's thread in Write Up section. They're using them in France. I've seen a couple of Fox Terrier x working terrier years ago and they did a job but never seen a full modern KC working. The simple fact is that the type of dog that I think you're referring to is purely a product of the show ring. They were developed from a working terrier stamp originally by crazy people who mis-interpreted the breed standard and once they started they couldn't stop and ended up with a caricature of a terrier. I'm not saying that they're incapable of work just that they were not develope
