  1. put together a video of the trips I've made in december. DISCLAIMER: this video doesn't really contain any exciting bolting rabbit footage or footage of the dogs on runs. Part of this is because virtually everything we have had so far this year has been dug, I've also been out in company on all but one occasion and I don't want to waste half of someone elses day messing around with cameras (as anyone who has put videos together can attest to, placing cameras while you are working is very time consuming as is working through hours of footage to get 5 - 10 minutes of good
  2. One dig we had this week, looked down the hole, saw the (dead) bunnies head. Readjusted myself to get my arm down and... Where's the rabbit gone? Camera back down for a gander and the sodding ferret had dragged thumper about 2 foot back down the pipe and well and truly out of reach. Knowing where the dead bunny now was allowed us to quickly and easily dig the hole out in the right direction and retrieve it. It may not be 'traditional' but neither is carting around £300 quids worth of locator and collars every week and if it saves time and effort I'm all for it! Work
  3. Plans are afoot... I have a 2ft long flexible magnet pick up tool type thing ordered so in theory I should be able to get around corners too. On the end will be the bullet camera and a small aaa powered pen torch feeding an image back to the screen which is sitting safely on the surface. Give me a week and I should have the mk1 version made!
  4. Following on from my last thread about the uncanny number of digs I'm getting this year compared to other years I stumbled upon what could be (to use youth jargon) a bit of a 'life hack' when digging once you have breached the pipe. I had one dig last week where I simply couldn't find the bunny in either direction down the pipe so, in a moment of inspiration* I turned my phones camera on and filmed inside the burrow in either direction. To my joy, I could see a hairy backside that was sitting in the top of the pipe, almost as if it was on a shelf or the start of a new
  5. Double check on the label but using a product like indorex (spelling may be wrong) should kill them off in the house / hutch. Also, have a look for some products for chicken coops that treat for things like red mite as they could also do ticks. Once the housing is sorted get a bottle of Frontline spray and treat your ferrets (make sure to cover their eyes and nose when spraying it) and that should keep them flea, tick and lice free.
  6. Has anyone else had a similar start to the season? This year it seems that the bunnies are really reluctant to bolt, first time out we had 11, 8 of which had to be dug. Today, and every other day so far 80%+ were digs. It just seems odd because land that has previously been relatively light on the need for the spade is turning into land that's barely worth purse netting because most of them are holding tight and getting balled up. It just seemed a bit wierd and I wondered if anyone else was having similar experiences.
  7. Is it just me or are there a lot of ferrets dying unexpectedly recently. I lost 3 in the last fortnight and I have a query. All of mine died after I took them off biscuits and put them back onto rabbit. Do we think there could be some sort of meat taint that can make them ill if they have rvhd?km not saying it's zoonotic and they are contracting it but what if the disease at a certain point in its incubation in the bunnies is causing it to affect them? I don't know and it is only a passing thought because this year I have heard about more unexpected deaths, pts and deformed kits t
  8. I'd say the quality and size of your rings is going to have a far bigger impact on the nets performance than the girth of the drawcord.
  9. Talk to your vet. Frontline changed when it came off license so there are other more effective options available. I've still got a bottle of Frontline spray that I use and have never had any issues
  10. They'll soon eat the bunny if you don't put biscuits in there for them. Mine will be going from 100% biscuit to 100% meat in the next week. They prefer the meat to the biscuits.
  11. You've got a duty to ensure your animals safety, even if it is 'only a ferret' A locator is step 1 and should always work but knowing where you can borrow a cage trap from to leave out if the ferret gets itself somewhere unreachable (under a building, big tree or somewhere daft like that) so you can return later that night or the following morning just gives you the ability to wait for a stuck ferret without having to physically wait. I don't carry a cage with me, but I've always got one at home if I need it and I'm generally never more than 20 minutes from home on any of my perms.
  12. Impossible to say. It will completely depend on fly activity, heat, wind, direct sunlight. Essentially anything between 8 hours and 3 days depending on conditions.
  13. 14acre. Cracking bloke to deal with. I won't even look anywhere else while he is still trading (apart from nels0n for quick sets!)
  14. Mine have a day or two each week with no food anyway because the greedy sods will just eat and eat and they end up carrying too much weight. I'd chuck in a normal volume of fresh bunny and then similar frozen for the following day if your worried. I'd avoid giving biscuit if your leaving them a couple of days purely because they will drink 5 times more compared to meat but, even a day without water ain't gonna kill them at this time of year.
  15. Cheap - Bisley. Catch well but fly away in a breeze and generally collect 3/4 of the bits of twig, nettle and leaf on the floor when you lift them Best - matter of opinion really. I go out armed with a selection of 3ft,3ft6 and 4ft purse nets I've knitted myself made in spun poly with 1 1/4" heavy rings on them. Others may say nylon are better than spun, others may say hemp are best.
  16. I've been working on one, on and off but the problem I can forsee is it snagging on nets,, twisting on the ferret itself obscuring the footage and more than likely getting full of dust and stopping working after a couple of holes.
  17. Kershaw northside hunter is a cracking little guthook folder if you can find one.
  18. Agouti are also gone, sort of. They sold out to fourteen acre. Still great quality gear at a decent price though.
  19. Not all pallets are made the same! Some will simply not Co e apart without damage, others are held together inexplicably with very little stopping them collapsing, others simply aren't worth the effort because the wood is so knotty, warped or uneven. I use a lot for kindling and find running the circular down inside the corner blocks / side rails and just scrapping the rest is far more economical time wise.
  20. Have you tried dog food of some description? I wouldn't even use webbox for rat bait
  21. Some pigeon in there too but not sure how many. Possibly a dozen or more.
  22. Where abouts are you? I've got 20 odd bunnies in a freezer I could do with emptying if your anywhere near Cheshire.
  23. Be very, careful. Despite their claims, most flyers will have their pigeons on more dope than Lance Armstrong. If they are young birds they should be OK so long as they've not had too much pumped through them. Mine get plenty of young birds as my uncle has a loft at the bottom of the garden here, good supply of unwanted eggs and youngsters!
  24. My personal opinion is if you are scraping the barrel by feeding crow and magpie you either need to stick your ha d in your pocket for dry food or do a better job filling the freezer through the winter. Hell, buy a cheap air rifle and go to your perm and drop a couple of bunnies or pigeons each week or go for a drive and pickup some fresh roadkill
  25. Similar to the op, my first Jill is a bit methodical, tends to work the top holes first then after popping up a few times will go down for as long as it takes to bolt whatever is down there. My other decent Jill tends to get a bit within 2 minutes whenever she gets entered and pushes good numbers out in really good time but does tend to take a long time on stubborn bunnies and won't stay on a stop end bunny forever. Because of their different habits I like to chuck both down at the same time and get the best of both worlds with them. Running fresh ferrets through where I've work
