Thanks for the advice folks. It's only really the first time she has been walked / mooched and slipped so wasn't expecting miracles but didn't want to let her get into bad habits early with not looking ahead. If it was a spaniel or lab running in, not quartering or screwing up retrieves I know how to cure it but with this thing being my first running dog there are certain mannerisms that are a lot different to the hunting instincts of gundog breeds. I'll stick to shorter grass for now so she can hopefully pick them up earlier by seeing them ahead and I'll give her the benefit of

I'm VERY safety conscious and i dont rely on safety catches either. I just don't consider it a problem to remove the mag and if I don't want a bullet in the chamber I won't cock it. Apart from everytime you pull the trigger... I'm not saying using a semi on the field is wrong, just there are no perceivable benefits (to me) compared with the many slight drawbacks over a bolt. Having used both as bunny guns I'd only ever grab the semi auto if I fancied a quick play or an ambush session.

Looks good. I just think metal will give the worst of both worlds... Colder in winter and hotter in summer.

So... You don't see a safety issue in there always being a live round in the chamber??!! Maybe its just me, but I like knowing there either isn't a live round in a cocked rifle when there doesn't need to be (especially in the field), I like having the ability to not chamber another round directly after a shot if I don't need to, I like the ability to open the bolt halfway to disengage the sears when there is a round in the chamber and I know I won't have an immediate need to pull the trigger. Purely relying on a mechanical safety is lunacy at best imho. Others may disagree but I'm no

Accuracy, while not as good as a bolt is not my main issue with using a semi in the field. Spent brass on the floor, more noise and a rifle that is a royal pain in the arse to make safe (especially at night) as you cannot stop it chamfering a round. When I used my old semi in the field under the lamp I spent more time dropping mags to unload the rifle (then sticking the round back in the mag again) than I did taking quick follow up shots. Under nv with the bolt action I've taken plenty of 2's, 3's and a couple of 4's over the years and have kept track of all my spent brass, l

Bit of a daft one - the lurcher has been working well over the ferrets through the winter and knows perfectly well what a bunny smells and tastes like and the motivation & prey drive is well and truly there but I have a slight... Problem but problem seems too strong a word for it. I took her for a bit of a mooch the other night and she missed 4 or 5 close rabbits bolting because she had her snout on the floor and was following scent. I stuck her on the lead and waited till we walked up on another couple, thought she had seen them so slipped her and again she went snout to ground

It's a bit bigger on the floor plan than I thought, looks well built though and agree with the catches, they look spot on.

Without seeing it in the flesh it's hard to say if this is a good idea or not. It doesn't look like it's got the footprint when being carried to be comfortable for 2 Ferrers. It's all well and good being big enough laying flat but it's going to spend a fair bit of time vertical. What may be a good idea along similar lines is to use an old school frame based rucksack to hold the ferret box at the bottom of the frame with the bag altered above to allow breathing room

Ferret Hutch Made Out Of Wood Or Welded Steel ?
Jax13 replied to kenny243's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Steel will be hotter on summer, colder / freezing in winter ans is more likely to get wet inside through condensation etc. There is a reason nobody has steel hutches. Having an insert, of sorts in the toilet corner that you can slide out for cleaning or using angle iron for the basic framework and ply panel inside it would make a good hybrid cage that will last well and when a panel starts rotting you can simply replace the one piece. -
How much is a 204 load costing you to put together if it's cheaper to load than a 17 hornet?

I retired my hmr then bought a wmr and much preferred it being totally honest. 30gn vmax all the way imho, had about 1k of the 25gn ntx because I was getting them at 6 quid a box but down range grouping wasn't as good as either the 30 vmax, 30 jhp or the 33 remmy accutip. It's every bit a 150yd gun imho, it will go further once you learn its drops but past 125 ish it becomes a bodyshot rifle for me rather than a head popper like the hornet is. Interestingly, I've had less meat damage from 30 vmax rounds on body shots than I did the 30jhp and both give noticeably less damage than

My 22 hornet is more than capable of head popping 9 times out of 10 out to 175 yards, if the 17 shooters are to be believed, theirs will do it further and for less driver input. I'm not sure about you, but I don't eat the heads! (plus if you do headshot them with a 35gn vmax there isn't exactly a lot of head left to take up space in the bin)

3 completely different tools. What do you want / need it to do? Cz lr bolt action - quiet, accurate, 100 yard gun for bunny, good but not great as a target / range gun. 17 hornet - fox capable, longer range bunny gun, expensive to run (unless you reload but the £300+ ish setup costs will buy a lot of lr rounds!) And the 10/22. A gamble. Some are great out of the box, most, well, aren't! Vast array of aftermarket parts and accessories so you can make the gun very reliable, very accurate and very smooth to shoot however a full custom 10/22 could easily end

I must admit there has been a massive (positive) change in her demeanour since starting working over the ferrets this winter and hopefully using the race club every few weeks through the summer when I get opportunity around other commitments should help maintain / improve her fitness and keep her match fit!

Spending To Much On This Sport!
Jax13 replied to David.evans's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
And does the exact same thing as my old second hand breda that cost me £115 and makes virtually everything I point it at fall over. How many cartridges can I buy with the spare £1785? (very nice looking gun by the way, should give you a lot of happy hours in the field) -
I've got one that is about 4ft long and it was perfectly fine for my 3 with a hammock hanging at one end and a couple of scaffolding plank shelves added for more space. They are now in a 7x3 bike shed which makes a cracking hutch - checkout the shed monkey website.

Bottom line is there won't be meat waste if you hit it in the head. The 17 is accurate enough to do it with a fairly competent shot out to 150 yards. I too like a nice wooden stock but being honest, for a field rifle it would be synthetic all the way. It won't swell if it gets damp, won't scratch or dent to the same degree, much more grippy to the touch (handy with gloves on), weight saving over wood is useful especially if you intend to run nv on top as well.

Good to know... About 15 of my 3 1/2 footers are only 3'4" because when I counted my rows for the mesh pattern I inexplicably became unable to count properly! Now it's become acceptable to count the ring they are now 3'6.5" (I use 1 1/4 rings!)

Yep, nowt wrong with it - I just noticed that it seems to unravel more than the single colour stuff. I'm a little anal about my nets and have made 3ft in green, 3.5 in blue and 4 in orange so I know what net I'm plucking out of the bag (there are a lot of places I go where 4ft nets can be a pain so stitched some smaller ones for that reason) The multi colour ones I'm just making 4ft pokes out of, again, so I know at a glance exactly what net I'm lifting out the bag. (got some pink too but they will also be 3.5ft ones as they are the handiest size for my perms.)

Chocolate egg day? I thought it was zombie jesus day?

I've found far more sanctimonious, pompous know it all but know nowt remtards in the powder burning world than I ever have on the airgun side of things. Sure, airgunners can be anoraks but in the world of magnum rimfire / small centrefire hunting we tend to just have a "there's one... Bang" approach because we can reach it and we know we are shooting flat enough to not really have to worry about wind or holdover at sensible ranges - if we had to get sub 50 yards or closer I would wager there would be far, far more lost opportunities.
-
I got the red, yellow and white one and find that it tends to unwrap itself really, really easily on cut ends and it also seems to straighten if your passing a loaded needle through a tighter gap (first row or added mesh) They catch just the same so it doesn't really matter.

Build your own. Nitesite are ridiculously expensive so even for extremely average performance. You can self build a unit very, very easily that will piss all over the NS for cost, range and clarity.
