  1. That's running before you can walk. The step up from /100 yards as a 'normal' (or most common) range for rimfire use to 250+ is a big one in its self regardless of calibre and really needs a different approach to the shot entirely
  2. My wmr was full length (20 to 22" ish) and wasn't screw cut when I bought it. I dropped it back to 19 when it was threaded and to be honest there is no noticeable difference to the handling with or without the mod. To be honest, if you can't use a mod then leave it full length, the shorter barrel comes into its own if your shooting out of hides / vehicles as with a mod your adding 5 to 6" to the end depending on your choice of mod so on a full barrel it can be a bit broomstick ish. Don't really notice it on mine tbh, but if I get the urge I'll probably have it knocked back to 16" bec
  3. Stick the permission slips in anyway. It's handy to have 3 or 4 places on file rather than just one on the off chance you lose that permission (sometimes this can happen for reasons completely out of your control) If you only have 1 declared piece of land and you lose it, you lose your 'good reason' to possess the guns until you can prove otherwise. 20 months in, force dependant they may tell you to wait longer before they grant open ticket irrespective of ammo used or previous experience, keep chucking the forms in and keep dragging them out to clear new bits of land for you. It's p
  4. I've got a pre accutrigger mkII savage in lr and a 452 in wmr. Both are now in aftermarket stocks but the main reason I didn't buy a cz lr when I first got my ticket was because I never found their stocks comfortable. I'd say the cz is marginally a better built rifle but accuracy wise, there really isn't anything in it once you sort out the triggers on both (which are both usually cack out of the box) the accutrigger is an improvement but still not quite as good as a properly sorted and bedded in cz unit (obviously the best option is to drop in a rife basix or similar down the line but yo
  5. Did you ever cure that ropey wmr you bought then or is it just for plates / paper?! Well, considering the question was about rimfire use I don't really see how the sauer etc are relevant but yes, barrel mounting a scope will cure the issue but there isn't a barrel mount rimfire system on the market to my knowledge. I am speaking from first hand experience of shooting the quad in question on occasion myself and shooting alongside it a couple of times a week for the best part of 18 months in 3 different cartridge sizes. All I can tell you is it works. It is repeatable (or as re
  6. Well, no. It works on a quad as well. It's what it was designed for by people a lot more clued up on rifles than you or I and if you invest in the system it works. The oversight in their plan was to have a dovetail for flexibility (or cost cutting?) than a pair of bases or a picatinny rail. You could always have a scope and mounts zeroed for each barrel if you don't trust the repeatability of your scope adjustment.
  7. If you invest in the barrel swap idea it does work and it doesn't need to be much hassle. A guy I used to shoot with until fairly recently had a sako quad with lr, hmr and wmr barrels. He invested in a decent picatinny rail and mounts, fitted his scope and hmr barrel (most commonly used) zeroed it and then reset his turrets (MTC mamba scope in this case) Not really anything any of us don't do with any new gun or gun that needs setting up. When he wanted to change cal, scope mounts were whipped off the rail (he got qr ones rather than Allen bolt ones) tool went in barrel out
  8. Good to see you haven't lost the knack of taking innocent statements out of context! Of course there will be the odd occasion where a longer shot is the only approach but there is a somewhat worrying trend these days of stretching rifles (or shooters) past their realistic limits or seeing how far you can drop something 'just because'. I'll admit I've been guilty of it myself to test where the realistic limits are with each of my rifles and I have had wounding shots and clean misses as a result but now tend to get a nudge closer in and go for high percentage rather than high yardage.
  9. No bravado here, just opinion. Sure, there are going to be trickier foxes to get I've had some myself but if they won't call or they become wary of a lamp or ir source you change approach and try baiting or a bushing on a known run. I've got 1 to topple next week that has proved elusive and ignorant to hand / mouth calls and electronic so far but it's been seen taking bait from the spot I've been leaving it in twice in the last fortnight at about the same time so when I can get down there next week it should be an ex-basil!
  10. Not certain on the specifics for the 17 but 22 hornet can be loaded with my rifles preferred rounds for pretty much the same as 30gn vmax wmr and cheaper than the 33gn accutip remmy wmr. This is including writing off brand new remmy brass after 10 loads and using the 35gn vmax. The rifle is like a walking off switch for 4 legged wildlife out to 175 regardless of it being bunny or fox. Since having it, my wmr and lr haven't been out of the cabinet in anger,i have no need for a 223 or similar for fox (if you can't call it or bait / ambush it to within 175/150 you don't deserve to
  11. Not really I was in kwik fit yesterday ,and a young lady was struggling to get her pushchair in the reception,so got up an held the door open for her must been 4 times as she went out to get shopping then came back whilst waiting for her vehicle.Same as if someone's walking behind me I hold the door not let it slam in their face, its just manners my parents raised me up with respect. Exactly. As I was coming out of Tescos with my newspaper the other morning I saw a young mum with a pushchair, a toddler and about 8 bags of shopping struggle out of the doors. I said to her "You should
  12. When you start reloading don't go in search of the holy grail. Hornet is notoriously easy to load for but as soon as you find a recipe that works for your gun and gives you what you want at 100 yards, stop developing. I see threads on various forums about people who constantly cock around with different powders, seating depths, bullet weights and bullet styles expecting sub moa (or close) performance to somehow improve... It won't. You can't reload better than human error in the making and shooting side of it.
  13. Are you actually claiming you completely clear every bit of land you ferret each year? Here's the thing... Clear as many as you want on smaller farms, paddocks and smallholdings, all it needs is the guy with permission on neighbouring land to not do his job properly and his overspill will happily move in and occupy the vacant, or nearly vacant Warren's on your permission. On one of my perms it is also pretty much impossible as the railway that runs through the middle of his farm and the motorway on the other end of it make it quite tricky to keep clear as I can only ransack
  14. Which is why there are 2 cabinets full of things that go bang in the house and a shed of little furry bitey things outside the house!
  15. Well, I don't poach so leaving sport for next year isn't really an issue and I'm not one of these that treats other people's land I have permission on as my own private game reserve! There is barely a bunny on our own land and I've got 2 decent sized permissions down now from being 50 / 60 bunny hauls with the nv to slightly more sensible numbers and ferreting some areas has gone from 12 / 15 for a couple of hours work to 2 or 3 if your lucky.
  16. If it's loud and rowdy at that time in the morning I'm sure dibble would probably call around if a domestic disturbance / noise nuisance call was made. Keep calling the non emergency 101 number each time they do it and make a log of the incident numbers, dates and times and get your neighbours to do the same, they will eventually be paid a visit and one of those blue and yellow stripey cars parked outside the house once or twice a week should dissuade most people from carrying on the same way. With a list of police incident numbers handed to the landlord from all the neighbours (not
  17. Happy in what way? It's a little bittersweet for me. I've got a knackered shoulder so digging hurts like hell and these hedgerows can be hard enough to dig at the best of times let alone when the ground starts drying up and the hedges themselves have wide spreading, well established roots but it means if the ferrets are now on the shelf until back end I'll be out with the rifle a bit more.
  18. Had a pair of does and 1 kit, probably 4 weeks old ish, bolted a couple more kits but the ferrets nailed them and dragged them back under. Really frustrating day, the ferrets seemed to be moving from nest to nest and didn't really move any adult bunnies. I lost a lot of my footage because of the sun glaring off the camera lens but did have a play with my cheap gopro copy on the lurchers collar (because I forgot to bring the actual dog harness I bought for it) Not the best footage, but it was all I got that was usable! https://youtu.be/0QV8uqCLweg
  19. Lots of small movement underground this morning, no doubt buzzing around in nests (judging by how fat one of them was when they eventually came back out again!) Had 4 bolt that were possibly 4 - 6 weeks old, dog caught one, ferret snaffled another and dragged it back under. I think I've got footage of the lurcher grabbing hers but need to check the gopro that was hanging on her collar and see if it caught it or not.
  20. I can't see how it will make much difference, so long as your meshes and rings pass along it nice and slick with little resistance the nets should purse up properly. I think i use 3mm on mine anyway

    Nets

I've got plenty of blue - did you just want a couple of nets making or a few needles full for knitting your own?
  22. I'd say without doubt that of you are happy with screened, homebuilders is the only way to go. If you want near eye but an add on then a ward is probably the best bet (or an archer) If you want dedicated then photon for sub 200 yard work and a pulsar for sub 450 yard.
  23. I use a self build add on kit and to be brutally honest they are only as clumsy as you make them. My screen is mounted alongside the scope on a swinging bracket so it folds in when not in use and the shooting position is more natural as you shoulder normally and just look past the scope instead of over it.
  24. The lad is clearly a wrong un. Who the hell in their right mind gives away perfectly good bacon? I mean, that's the definition of untrustworthy behaviour.
