a lurcher is a dog to catch game on the run when he cant do that he isnt much a lurcher

a dog reaches there prime 3 year old but had them at 2 as good as they will ever be , i reckon 2 till 5 for coursing or open land hunting of slip ,and once they lose the pace etc a bit lamping ferreting to finish of there running life ,mooching or pack hunting as some do you never realy get there prime as they mob them rather than course one on one , 4 good seasons is the norm for me back in the day then start losing a little bit pace, pick up odd nick here and there then if there up for it lamping ferreting and the odd days daylite hunting , saw dogs catch good hares up till they were seven b

ive always believed in testing your dog at the game your at ,3 to 4 seasons then if you think your needing a replacement then breed of simliar proven stock, lost a few dogs and only maybe got one lining of them and while the pups were good , you could had tried a diffrent, lines im out all the time so the dogs have to come up with the goods in the feild or they go to pet homes ,to many just keep a dog for a pet or because of the current fashion ,the curent fashion is to say a dog has to just please me thats fine if he is doing the biz regulary on game ,day and nite its apity the lurcher has be

a quarter collie is enough for any running dog and selective bred ones at that , saw some good ones over the years my mate had a few they were collie lurchers , not first crosses etc they were some dogs ,a dog has to have pace to catch game and the more colie less pace , to run down there qaurry ,he had a bitch called lana , could catch game any were and very hardy ,on any game but soft mouthed on rabbit hare ,never see the real good collie types as much now
-
i would prefer 4 or 5 for first litter but if she is fit and the male dog not to big she should be fine but not the best having pups at eight year old
-
very true a dog has to be tested single handed on its game ,wouldnt breed of a dog unless very good at its game , and wouldnt by a non working bred dog ,has to be of proven parents , as you are in with a better chance by far , some people breed for sentimental reasons not beacause they are good ,the lurcher is a pet dog nowadays with only the odd die hard dog man left here and there just the way it has went for some.

to me a good hare dog has to be relaxed in tune with the game , saw dogs and owner jump a fence hares spied, dog looks about makes his mind up and is gone , hees read the feild and tries to keep the hare were he wants it to be, for a catch , breeding is important and so is entering and stockmanship, you need the land and game to bring the best out of a dog , something that gets harder each year at times

there a man near edinburgh area i bought a pup of him and saw his dogs work ,if i wanted a good alround dog not saw better he used to be on here whin , got some very good dogs for allround work ,yet to see better ,dont no if he lets people use them tho , i think bird saw rex ply his trade ,he has had 2 litters of him and they do the bizness no problem on allsorts ,

foxhound a working old fashioned lurcher was never ment to take a fox they were there to snatch a rabbit take a hare and maybe a few pheasants and anything edible to feed the family and put a good show on a hare , if they took a fox then a bonus but no big deal ,real brains is great but can develop dogs into cocking on game etc pulling up etc , on a chase especaily if lacking pace , its good to see this type about still and ideal for rough cover woodland hunting , were they come into there own
-
saw a few of that type of collie cross , were limited but good hole markers and good for bushing and lamping rough ground ,we grew up with collie type dogs, good to see them still going about
-
grow up guys i mean to me its a bobbery pack or a bit gung ho its not coursing in a true sense i dont think its supposed to be , its a free for all as kids we used to walk out with a bobbery pack we were lucky to get one sally or abrace of rabbs we had terrier mongrel odd greyhound ,to many purists at least its not banned there etc and have more freedom than the uk

a lucher if not got pace gets out paced could start yapping be careful,as some will be collies , and some wil be a bit faster than a collie , personaly steer clear and look for collie lurcher to lurcher best way , had some crackers bred that way , catch and fetch whats on offer ,for rabbiting something with a bit whippet greyhound through it

cant beat seing another wild predator catch his prey and using his natural ability, never get fed up of cheeta catching gazzele, peregrine catching grouse or pidgoen , and a greyhound taking a hare ,ferret sorting awarren of rabbs out, just natural

dogs were made to give us pleasure and at times break our hearts , tough life for a proper working dog ,ive always kept a few so if you lose one you always have a mate to take over ,at least he had a decent life , fed looked after and worked properly and filled your bag , may the sun be on your face and the wind and rain on your back , go out and get another

i dont see any thing wrong with the mink getting to kill its game ,can only learn it to deal with game better

sounded like a good day out for all

only pro piont i can see is for roadsiding gate ways, spying game without spooking them and come later on when its quite and have your sport, a few mates i have ,have 4 grand ones on there estate ideal for foxes amongst sheep etc on massive land , with big rifle ,as there spooky in some places

artic as you no when you put money before selective breeding all rules go out the window for some mate ,some look as a dog as a meal ticket others coursing hunting companions were money wouldnt buy them ,

i saw the original tor of dartmoor nice big dog we had dogs out of him years ago. and i phoned the man up who had khan jad i asked him if he was any good as a hare dog he says limited ,but he is at stud , as there not many salukis put out willy nilly to anyone with a dollar,i wouldnt waste my time artic explaing pedigrees ,best way is see how a dog performs then use him i had dogs down from brigawrn they were decent dogs agressive and strong on the chase he was a decent in his day , for breeding , saw sniper to out of him a very good dog that did do 5 ,hares and one the forley , pedigrees to g

i wouldnt waste my breath answering about saluki crosses ,dytkos i have seen the odd collie cross use his head on a chase but in there third season, not from pups or 14 momnth old yearlings ,saw 10 week old pups cutting corners useing angles to catch there siblings, and had a bitch 14 month useing her head while lamping and daytime , saw several useing there head on game and mixed with a bit pace there deadly , saw a hare trying to get out feild three times by a gate and young bitch kept it out and it was on a slope so difficult but she managed ,a good hare ,every body has a standard i like a
