The very top ranks of the military are a career choice for the ruling class. As is politics. As is the judiciary. That's where raw power and money lies. Particularly in the days of empire. Of course they are attracted to the military, they own large parts of the country and they want to keep a firm hold on what they have. 3 A star A levels got you into Oxbridge . Lots of state schools achieved that. But the vast majority of the people they accepted were from public schools. Why? They've changed now I think they've been forced into accepting more state kids than private. There has been no change in the world rankings of Oxford and Cambridge. Anyway I'm out. This could run and run and my fingers hurt.

Lots no doubt but they took in a much higher proportion of public school kids. I believe they've been forced into change now that was over 30 years ago. But they were kicking and screaming about the change.

I used to be on a school board of a comp. We had kids who used to apply to Oxbridge with 3, 4 and in one case 5 A grade A levels. Their qualifications could not be bettered. But we only had one girl even get an interview at either university and she was rejected. Price Charles ,the paedo Prince and the third inbred looking brother got in with a C and two Ds at A level, something like that. Even though I disagree with you a lot, I would genuinely prefer somebody like you as an officer to the Sandhurst lot. I don't trust them full stop. It's the same as politicians. I would prefer to press gang some decent bloke off the street than the pile of shite on offer.

There used to be an award for bravery beyond that expected of rank or words to that effect. That gives you an insight into the social apartheid of the British army.

I checked this morning the social composition of Sandhurst. It's 65/35 in favour of public schools. This is way more socially balanced than it used to be. Public school educated kids make up 7% of the population. So they seem to find twice the number of suitable candidates from that elite 7%. I think it would be naive to assume the comprehensive kids don't face a glass ceiling when the real top jobs are on offer. Personally I would like all recruits to go through the same training for a least two years and officers chosen from their ranks regardless of background. But british soc

But Moyes is chalk and cheese to the public school/ Sandhurst lot. He came from nothing, has actually played the game and is a highly successful manager, whatever you think about his tactics. If he were my boss in the army I would follow him over the top. But my nightmare would be told to go over the top by some Blackadder whilst he had a cup of tea nice and safe in his bunker.

Everybody is a prisoner to their experiences of life. I've never met a member of the 'officer class' who I didn't despise for their misplaced confidence and general world view which seems to entail them being entitled to all decision making. When they divide pies they think they can take 3/4 of it themselves. The culture I was brought up in dictated you never crawl to the teacher or to the boss man. I still believe that. Sorry if that's offensive to some but that's my opinion and this is a forum where opinions are exchanged.

Sometimes, but I never respond to keyboard insults. It's demeaning. I also never write anything I wouldn't be prepared to say to a person's face. You are probably the same. I only hope your superiors return the respect and admiration you afford them. I doubt it.

Believe me its not unconscious bias. I'm sure you are very important and have done well for yourself after a dodgy start in life. Well done, genuinely. But your description of your 'superiors' did make me feel a tad squirmy. But do me a favour. Pass a message from me to those 4 officers. Tell them I think they are probably complete arseholes. This is a conscious decision.

I think bitterness is a description of many of the posts on here. Biterness about immigration, loss of identity, in your face corruption and lack of respect given to us as British citizens. Imo its perfectly reasonable to feel bitter about modern Britain. Imo, people are trained in this country to defend the status quo. So those in power don't have to work hard at all to keep things as they are. Union leader Bob Crow used to be given dog's abuse for living in a council house. I wouldn't trust the paedo Prince with any decision, much less a decision involving lives. The officer class in the UK is chosen from a particular group of rich posh people. Often land owners. Sandhurst is their finishing school. They are completely out of touch with normal everyday life. They may recruit a few token blacks and proles these days just to cover themselves. Officers should be chosen on merit not on background. But the UK is riven with class and we still touch our forelocks and curtsy to them.
