  1. I'm further south towards Lough neagh its took a hammering down this way also like most places, although the pollution wasn't anywhere near as far up as you from what I know.
  2. I'm the same first few hard frosts and then it's time. Haven't had the rods out yet since fishing for the eel in the summer. Is there a story behind 'the eel' or is it just in general you fish for eels in summer? http://www.eelfishing.co.uk/eel.php

  4. Great news glad to hear it, I don't want to bust your bubble but if they where my dogs I wouldn't be holding onto them for obvious reasons.

  6. Loved the passion for angling especially the episode they caught two big pike in a river beside a bridge.
  7. I'm not picking or choosing earths haha. All my terriers aren't on the small size, far from it. I don't have different sized terriers for different situations, they are all big, and if one drops in along a bank in a tightish place he/she can and will dig on like they are meant to do. Now my friends have hounds and lurchers, terriers the same size as my own and also small terriers they have for when they go beating cover with hounds. If a fox breaks and the hounds or a Lurcher puts it to ground in a real tight spot. If I happen to be out with them in that scenario "which is very rarely" they're
  8. No, I didn't say you said that it's what I took from it, that's why I asked. To be honest size doesn't make any difference unless we would be running foxes into tight spots with hounds. Then size would matter when it comes to time. Dropping a big lump of a terrier in a small poky spot a fox has been ran into is just stupid because the time it will take for the dog to dig on and squeeze to get to its quarry will be longer, but the time spent when they make contact will be no difference. Anyway that doesn't happen because we've dogs for jobs so size is very rearly ever an issue and the small ter
  9. Any terrier whether it's young or experienced needs to be given ample time underground. On your first comment you advised to do just that. Then on your second comment your saying the time you let a terrier stay to ground depends on a dogs size and temperament? What has the size of a dog got to do with how long you would leave it before digging to it? Same with the work ethics? Yes young terriers obviously you like to get the spade over them and keep them winning so your going to be going to them sooner than an experienced dog. But what you've said to me is if the dogs hard then you'll be diggi
  10. I don't know if this has been mentioned but are you giving him enough time? Some people are to quick with the spade and start digging as soon as contact is made. Let the dog settle into his work load and give him time to push the quarry into a stop. A couple of bangs above before you start digging should move the quarry if it's not in a stop. Yes the amount of time you give depends on the dogs size an temperament, as well as the earth you've put your dog in, and although we have no control over it a lot has to do with the temperament of the quarry. Do you know if you are coming or goi
  11. Try digging to the rear of the terrier that way your not on top of the game or right on the action, hopefully that should make a difference. If as you stated at times he's letting game go on further ahead and he's not following in pursuit it sounds like the dog isn't fully commited.
  12. The dog owners UNLEASH there pets in fox or badger holes for sport ? That was enough for me. On a different note some off you's lads would be safer off getting a room or take it to pm.
  13. As said by Shovel try and socialise him as much as possible it will take time but if you have a muzzle on to begin with it should prevent any mishaps. Have a friend who got a dog that was the same, he's a different dog now but just wouldn't put the house on him and leave him for long unsupervised. Atb
  14. Safer off throwing another £100 at a brand new one with full warranty rather than buying second hand at prices like that. Unbelievable, I sold my pieps setup for less than half that 2 years ago. I'd be embarrassed to ask that for the old setup and two collars no matter what the condition. For a start the box is worth say £100 and you can't buy new parts for the collars as they've discontinued them so once they're damaged its game over and they're not worth £100 a piece, they were that price new!
  15. I was just thinking about that Neil and to be honest with you out of all them dogs ive seen over the years even to date, I can't think of a smallish wheaten dog! Now I know their probably is plenty about, whether or not they'd be bred the prefered way or not is another story. I know before my time there has been small wheaten dogs some that held their own and some even excelled compared to the bigger animals, Peter Sinead for example. Most of the wheatens I have seen and know of were far from small or even close. That's only my experience though I'm sure others could be the opposite.
  16. Mate has a Glen bitch there has been looking for a long time for a dog to put over her, Sod's law I see this and the dogs away. Sorry to hear that.
  17. A well respected terriermen I know had a bitch that ended up in his yard, she was well bred. long story short, The bitch was deaf. A real good bitch. Died of cancer a year or so later. There's a difference between a terrier being switched on and ignoring your demands while it does its job and not being able to hear threw deafness. The one that is busy and can hear, but ignores you, would be safer off deaf, its not going to listen while it's onto a scent. Couldn't fault that bitch, couldn't call her out haha
  18. Had that happen to me a few years back with a wee red dog in a handy earth we were going to check. You never know what to expect in this game.
  19. I only keep terriers but my friends have hounds and lurchers and they do really well on it especially in the cold weather they keep really good condition, we all soak it in boiling water and let cool then add beef chicken or pork. I use the O Neil's dog food, I buy off the supplier £7.50 for 18kg can't be beaten for value for money. It retails at nearly double that mind you : ) Don't put boiling water over it pal it destroys all the nutrients in it just put warm water over it Question is would you feed it dry or not? Thanks

  21. Right lads I was around at a mates yard the other day and he was feeding his dogs when I arrived. He was feeding a muesli type dog meal, it didn't have many nuts in it from what I could see (not sure what brand) anyway, i noticed that he was giving it to them dry! Now I feed something similar to my own and I swear by it, but there's no way on Gods earth I would feed them it dry. To me that type of meal needs soaked before feeding, so that's what I told him. He disagreed with me. What's your views on this?
  22. thought as much going by your username lol
  23. What type of terriers do you keep Peb?? Hard to beat the white stuff ?
  24. Had a sandy dig few weeks back the mate started off digging and I was shovelling he made the dig a circle ( which I hate ) and I asked him why? He said circles are better and the world is round so that's why! I told him that's bullshit and to square it off like we always do. This guy never listens or takes any advice he does the exact opposite (you know the type) anyway 1.3 down broke threw to the dog and there wasn't much room to manuvere at all. The circle dig he had created had icecream coned on the way down. Well I did tell him so at the beginning but think he's got the message now at leas
