  1. Hi Mitch,If you are not going to stick with the redfield sight , i would not bother with this combo deal . Try looking on Guntrader website , you will find a decent set up for a lot less money . Check out a Tikka or Sako A T B
  2. The triggers are very good on the steyer, cant tell you much about the x bolt though , but as with any set up your money should always go on the scope , like i said most modern rifles will shoot a reasonable group , go for quality optics , schmit , zeiss , swarovski , decent leupold .
  3. The weatherby is a very heavy rifle , something you might consider if you plan to lug it round all day .Also the trigger pull is poor but this can be improved by fitting a timmony trigger . Most modern rifles shoot well enough , but i would go with the pro hunter all day long .
  4. I wouldnt worry about charlie too much he's a born survivor !! The fact that you havnt seen him dosent meen he's not there . Prior to putting my poults to wood i was putting in a lot of hours dawn dusk and on the lamp and seeing very little . As soon as they went in it' like ringing the dinner bell . First morning i picked up two in snares . Later on i got some of the lads over with the terriers and lurchers and we accounted for three cubs in two outings , i had no idea they were about , just goes to show what a cunning and stealthy creature they are , you cant help but admire them !!!!
  5. They start earlier up there dont they !!
  6. Saw a buck rutting last night , and a different one on another part of the estate this morning . A bit earlier than usual , perhaps this warm weather brought them on a bit . I'm in Gloucestershire by the way , any one else seen any activity ?
  7. Hi mate , To be honest i wouldnt bother keeping them in your set up , not big enough , even for one pair . They are a fairly wild bird and easily spooked , they take to the wing at the slightest disturbance and will be constantly hitting the wire . While they have large clutches they are not the best parents , and i think you will be dissapointed . All the best
  8. I recommend hazel , you can cut them now , but its better when the sap stops . They are best about half an inch or so wide . I always made mine the length of my arm , from my armpit to the tips of my fingers . once cut sharpen one end and leave them to dry out for a few weeks but be careful they dont warp .
  9. I like the noise , it lets you know if there is movement .
  10. Everywhere was wet last year!!!!. If you have wet areas these will probably be in low lying areas ,not the best for showing high sporting birds????But if its flat and you want to shoot these areas ,the best thing you can put in is willow, simply cut some withy sticks about a meter in length and stick the cut end in about 6 to 8 inches about 12 to 18 inches apart. They grow very rapid and thrive in wet ground, but you are looking at a longer term sort of cover that wont be very good for a year or two.ATB
  11. Hi mate,I dont want to put you off, because there is a lot of pleasure to be had from a well run syndicate.I dont know how much knowledge or experience, you have .But the fact you are asking on here tells me that you might be new to the sport. If that is the case ,you need to get someone who has run a succesful syndicate or a gamekeeper to take a look at your wood and give you some advice. Almost any wood cad hold game, but they will be able to tell you how much and where to site a release pen etc....There are so many pitfalls that can cost a lot .....seek advice , but dont be put off,the rewards
  12. I think it is most likely nettles, this time of year the young nettles are at ground level and can be walked on.The sting is also very potent at the moment .just try and avoid areas that have nettles,if the itching stops, great ...but if you cant avoid them ,i agree with Cleanspade and give the dog some anti histermines,PIRITON is a good one.
  13. Ive got one that was given to me ,so i didnt make it .It was cut in half longways ,so youve got two halves.Discard one half. With some box section ,weld some legs on it ,it will now look like a feed trough.Nick a shopping trolley, and cut a section of the stainless mesh to fit .Then in the half barrel, weld some supports for the mesh.Job done
  14. I got a taper mouth builders shovel from the car boot 50p. Then with an agle grinder ,made a round mouth. Then go a mate who is a welder to weld a steel tube handle,a sort of T shape handle. Its quite heavy which has its pros and cons but it can take all the stick you can give it.I also have a bulldog round mouth , they are great shovels , but very large, and too big for tight spaces. Also i get little plates welded on my shovels to save my boots.A T B
  15. Nice pis ,just had to go and put on a jumper!!!!
  16. MMMMMMM.........Wiltshire.........zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
  17. Cant tell you about anywhere else , but i can tell you that gloucestershire has some of the hardest digging ! Ive had guys come out with me who have dug all over and they all agree that you wouldnt want it any harder. You clear the topsoil, then a foot of clay, then you hit the limestone. You need a bar an excavator and a garden fork with the two outside tines ground off to loosen the ground. I dream about light soil where your shovel sinks in easy and and a bar is something gathering dust at the back of my shed.
  18. If you want to increase numbers , do it , but do it gradualy. That way you will know what your ground can handle.
  19. Harkila and swazi are without doubt top quality, but the price is crazy.Check out swede team,in the bush wear cataloge, top quality stuff at a realistic price!
  20. Partrige shooting is a numbers game. They are a covey bird, you get a covey over a gun and he has two shots at it,four if he double guns.To shoot a 200 - 400 bird day you have to put a lot of birds over the guns .Also most partrige shoots top up through the season.I dont think you can judge yourself against another shoot because there are so many variables, not least the quality of the keeper.
  21. When i did a lot of wildfowling i found that when the weather was at its worst ,freezing cold , biting wind ,and rain, when shooting is at its best. After a water retrieve,my springer would start to shiver, and this is a big dog that was kenneled outside.Another factor is colour ,a white springer sticks out like a sore thumb on the marsh .However nowadays there are neoprene jackets available in camoflage.Had these been around years ago i would have tried them, but from what i here they are very good.
  22. Nice looking bitch!!!I agree with the previous post ,it looks like a nuttal dog i owned in the late 80's.What is the breeding?
