We used to have housemartins under the eves of my house ,then i discovered the nests broken open and the parents all distressed .They rebuilt and had another brood and the same thing happened. So i watched and waited to see who the distructive culprit was......a Greater spotted woodpecker!!!A beautiful bird ,but i wanted to ring its neck, nature can be cruel.

I have had three L200s and i cannot fault their off road performance, but i found that i wa only gettng about 18 to 20 mpg.Just got a ranger and that is doing 25 pushing 30 mpg and seems pretty good off road too, although i havent had cause to test it properly yet,but it does seem more comfortable on and off road, hope this helps.ATB

We are all different ,but surely anyone who enters a show wants to win?I keep my dogs for work and would never dream of keeping show dogs ,but being competative is part of human nature?Everyone loves a winner, especially the Irish at Cheltenham!!!

I love the shows and i am lucky enough to have good looking russel dog that works and does well in the ring, and lets be honest who dosent get a kick out of getting a red rosette or a trophy??But a word of warning a friend of mine will no longer go to shows,he believes he was followed home after a show and had some dogs stolen ,never to be seen again! So enjoy the shows ,but keep your wits about you and put a couple of diversions in on your way home!!!

Real Time Tax Reporting
shovel leaner replied to WILF's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
You wont have to sort anyones tax,the beaters have to supply you with their NI number and personel details. This is only going to spoil things for people who are signing on or on benefits of some sort,so ....good!!!We shoot on saturdays so a lot of my beaters are self employed,or kids, there are a couple of beaters who are on disability, who have been coming to this shoot for 40yrs +++,they are so decrepid they are not even fit enough to go on stop, but because they have been coming so long and it is a big part of their life,i feel sorry for them! But for the self employed great ,put in for waterpr -
Good question!!!I assume you mean, showing your dogs, with a few scars? I would avoid parading around with something too disfigured, although i have seen terriers minus noses and lower jaws being shown ,these must have been old dogs that sustained these injuries pre ban!! On this subject,i have found that a judge at a working terrier show will often give preferance to a dog which has signs of work to a dog which has never seen any action. This can be misplaced because i know terriers that you can work day in day out,and because they dont mix it have no scars ,but they are valuable workers. The

It depends on your morals or ethics, vixens will be having cubs soon if some havent already. If you are comfortable killing next years sport crack on,but dont start moaning when there is a shortage of foxes later on.All creatures need time to breed and flourish, you say you are new to this, take some time to watch foxes and study their habits, time taken doing this will make you a better hunter and give you some respect for your chosen quarry. On the question of what to do with your dogs during the summer, shows are a lot of fun!!!

Fir Trees To Hold Phasants ????
shovel leaner replied to ratter1234's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Hi,Christmas trees are good and can provide shootable cover fairly quickly depending on what size you plant .If you have some laurel on the shoot already you can get some free plants just planting some cuttings (look for the branches with the roots growing out of them). If the area has some ground that is a bit boggy "where isnt at the moment"try some willow, which again can be planted from cuttings for nothing.ATB -

Getting a Springer to hunt, long story.
shovel leaner replied to kermitpwee's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
Thats great mate ,a little tip when you introduce him to shot is ,do it gradually.By that i mean get a mate to shoot 200yrds away and gradually move nearer, constantly reassure him if he seems nervous, you will probably find he will be fine.If you have a starting pistol or dummy launcher you could fire it muffled in a bag or coat to start with .Good luck SL -
I couldent agree more ,gun fit and shouldering is the problem, the more you shoot the less you will notice recoil,WHAT YOU DONT WANT TO DO IS START FLINCHING.

theres thousands of deer in wales ,and i mean thousands , I never said there were no deer in Wales, and im not knocking welsh hunters.I have mates in south Wales ,i go sewin fishing and sea fishing with them . They are all mad keen shooting and dog men, they know the crack.Maybe where you are there are a lot of deer,TAKE MY ADVICE AND KEEP THE KNoWLEDGE OF THEIR WHEREABOUTS TO YOURSELF!!!!!I keeper an estate in Gloucestershire and have had nothing but trouble with gangs of poachers from wales. These men are organised criminals with 4X4S radios and a willingness to use violence.I have been beate

new to pheasants
shovel leaner replied to JRT27's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Once they have gone into a barn and been medicated, what then ? where are you going to put them? There is a right way and a wrong way of doing things, those birds need to go in a proper release pen,to stand a chance,if you confine them any more they will start to feather peck and eat each other. My advice is to find someone with a small diy shoot who will take em off your hands to top up one of their pens.If you really want to bring on some pheasants ,get a book on it or get some good advice, from someone who knows what they are on about, build a decent release pen of an apropriate size for the amo -

shovel leaner replied to JRT27's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
When you said you had a good size release pen i didnt realize it was a 17x35ft ,coverted polly tunnel! This set up seems unsuitable to say the least.Birds need some cover like bramble or laurel or bushes and trees to roost in.This coupled with birds that are poorly feathered,is a recipe for disaster.Let me tell you a little secret, some unscrupulouse game farmers ,have scruffy birds that are leftover after they have caughtup their birds for customers, they are usually small poorly feathered runty things, these can be brought on with a bit of TLC or sold to someone like yourself CHEAP!!!! A bad year for wheat!
shovel leaner replied to shovel leaner's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Mmmmm, wonder what the price of pellets and wheat will be next year . Can see a few smaller shoots folding or roughing it. had all my fields cut now, not looked at the wheat but the barley ive seen has been rediculously soft mushy crap. bet the price of ale doesnt go up though, well i fecking hope not All the milling wheat in my area has failed and is going to animal feed .I reckon this will keep the feed price down or about the same as this year! -

shovel leaner replied to JRT27's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Because of the low number of birds and the fact that you say its a large release pen,and you havent had birds in there year in year out, disease seems unlikely, how were the birds acting ? Were they loafing around with their necks in and feathers puffed out?You have checked the bodys for marks of predation,so rule that out.If you can get some BAYCOX into them, wont do any harm. -

shovel leaner replied to JRT27's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
How were the birds reared ? Did they get hardened off on a field ie in a net covered flight.Or as i suspect in a shed or barn setup. If they have not been given the chance to get used to a bit of rain on their backs and to get their preening glands working ,they could well succumb to a lot of rain. -
Rifle for foxing and roe
shovel leaner replied to mealiejimmy's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
6.5x55 would do boar with a heavy load. BUT, so would a 22 rimmy in the right spot. Boar need a big lump of lead, .308 minimum, 30-06 is better. I know of no Firearms dept that would approve 243 or 6.5x55 for boar, and for once they are right. Ithink i will just borrow my hosts rifle when i go ,cant afford a new set up for a rifle that realisticly only see light of day, once a year.....maybe!!!Thanks for getting back on this. -
