Hi Jack,The modern working terrier by Michael Shaw is not bad . But you asking a question that is a bit like , "are there any books on how to ride a bike ". It is something that you learn through practical experience . Getting the right dog is the first thing . Beware of people peddling digging dogs . Most digging lads dont sell their dogs and gift them to mates , who also dig . Im afraid it is a bit of a closed shop , the best dogs wont be advertised in pets for homes , put it that way . Maybe someone on here will take you under their wing and show you the ropes , but dont count on it . Pe

The RSPCA has been a pain in the arse for years . About 10 years ago i was sent a begging letter from them with a "free biro" and a pre paid envelope . I got a house brick wrapped it up and stuck the pre paid on it and sent it back to them with the biro and a letter telling them to stick it up their arse !

Was out with my russell dog today by some barns , i was doing some work and he was mooching about by some bales . Next thing all hell breaks loose , he had a fox up the side of the bales in a very tight gap , i couldnt reach him and he eventualy killed the fox . When i eventually got him out and put him away i was able to hook out the foxes body , it was really mangey , with very little hair on its tail and mask . I rang up my mate who i dig with for advice and he recomended some hibi scrub and some ivomec which i have . Anybody got any advice , dont want to risk the dog but would like to avoi

Although i made a silly post earlier on this thread , i have been reading a lot of the posts with real interest . I am not a religious person at all , and although i dont go to church myself , i dont knock anybody who gains comfort or peace from whatever belief they have , whatever god or church they go to . All religions basicly teach people to lead a good life "love thy neighbour" , "covet not thy neighbours wife" , dont kill , dont steal , etc etc . I try to abide by these rules because its the right way to live , and my mum and dad taught me right from wrong , not because i fear eternal

Never could get me head around religion ! I guess i must be a very shallow person . I have always been too busy earning a living , shagging , drinking , watching footie , and field sports to give it a second thought . And as for heaven , well if its full of those "born again " christians , id rather be cast into the bowels of hell !!! See most of you there then .

A terrier that is going to work fox should be spannable , end of . In pre ban days when i went out with the hunt , you might have 20 or thirty followers waiting impatiently for a bolt or a result , no time to wait for a big dog with "lots of heart" to get there . It does piss me off a bit when i go to terrier shows and see these white lakelands in the russel class , clearly not spannable . winning !!! Thank god most terrier men worthy of the name breed for performance , and not show success .

I'm just back in from whacking a few rats on a local farm thought I'd catch up, Alimac, my terriers are as biddable as any gundog especially at pushing any sort of cover, they do catch more than I like if that's a fault but they spend 7 days a week all year round doing so, I would put my pack up against any other in this country safe in the knowledge that they wouldn't let me down, I hunt up in Scotland on my mates estate who's a headkeeper in Perthshire and then go further north to a mate in Wick before coming back down the west coast to stay in Drumnadrockit, Invernesshire, if your anywhere

Went to Stuarts funeral service yesturday , at Cheltenham crematoriun . A more moveing and fitting send off , than ive ever seen . The chaple was packed with his family and friends , keepers , terriermen and country people from far and wide . And when the huntsman blew "AWAY" i dont think i was the only one with a lump in my throat . R.I.P Frosty , our thoughts are with the family

yes she does work light cover mostly cause its what is on most of my ground but when she does go in to the heavy cover she goes through it and still never gets cut As long as the dog is giving you sport whats the problem ? Sounds to me like you have a sensible dog .

Buy of the french with caution !!! A lot of the lads i know by me who dealt with stuff coming from France , had nothing but trouble , in the form of microplasmosis . There was a lot of rota virus going around French hatcheries . And they sent all their sh-t over here !!! With respect I have dealt with gibovende for many years purchasing hundreds of thousands of eggs and day olds. I didnt say dont buy from the French , they have the best closed flocks . I said buy with caution ! And if you recommend them and have had no problems then thats good enough !!! Sorry didn't mean to so -
It just depends what type of cover you work , your dog looks like it is going in some grass and a bit of bracken , i would consider light cover . Dense bramble or gorse i would consider heavy cover , and you can expect your dog to get cut a bit . Also your dog will only attack cover if he thinks something is in there , if he is on ground that holds little or no game he will be switched off .

Got to say , ive found that Kansas crosses hold like glue , and are a a light framed bird that flys very well and eats a bit less food . Downside is when you are trying to blank them into an area to a flushing point , they are likely to just get up and fly back over your head . So i just put them into rides where the beaters flush them with dogs . Common ring necks or black necks can be driven miles . -
Soft spaniels then? I agree with everything else you've said by the way, terriers will catch things whereas spaniels won't but I've never come across a spaniel that gets sickened off by cover? Not to be impolite mate but do you go to games ?.......Because that is not an active fans attitude......its a telly fans attitude......telly fans dont really care for winning trophies too much they just want to see their club mixing it with the best ( which of course we all do )........but for fans who make sacrifices thats not enough.....i cant answer for him but my guess would be a chap like Wilf who go,s to games would have no problem playing Leeds and Millwall next year if it meant winning a trophy this year........go ask a Fulham fan,a Stoke fan................all the way down to a Dagenh

Need Some Advice. . . .
shovel leaner replied to Ideation's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Good advice lab , but make sure that if you do go it alone you keep yourself out of the reach of the dreaded VAT man . Once you turn over in excess of around £70,000 you are going to have to start charging vat . Get some advice , and do your sums first !!! -
Wilf i agree with what you are saying . You can see the frustration building up in what i would call a really good pro in Nolan , acting the way he did ! The thing is we havent got a decent striker , cant hit the back of the net . Sam is playing the best game he can to get a result with the team hes got . Guess what ? I dont give a monkeys for the FA cup or the capital 1 cup , its the premiership we need to stay in ! Right now the Cardiff game is all i care about , if we lose that , i think Sam will go , no matter how much it costs the club , i think his position will be untenable !

That would imply he is capable of playing " pretty football " ............Your entitled to your opinion mate.......but personally i dont think theres any coming back from this. Pretty is as pretty does ! A win would be nice !!
