  1. I know a few top spaniel guys three of which have won the championship . I wont mention any names but if you follow trials you would be familiar with them . I have watched them training dogs and can tell you that what you saw on that film is nothing , i am not condoning it , but these guys know what they are doing and some dogs are harder than others . I prefer soft dogs that you only have to raise your voice and they have rolled on their back , but thats cos im a softy and dont like to employ such methods . But if you have a hard going dog that is as stubborn and willfull , then you need to
  2. I shoot a 527 and have done for years . Its a very good rifle and 223 is in my opinion the best fox round . My bullet of choice is SAKO 50Grain Game head . The kills are very good with this round , they dont go far once they have been hit , and the accuracy is very good . Ive experimented with home loads , but have found very little improovment .
  3. I am the classic poacher turned gamekeeper .I had always been into terriers ferrets and running dogs and snared longnetted and caught things in every manner possible . I then got roped into beating on a local estate and i was hooked . Got a spaniel then another then another before i knew it i was picking up as many days as i could . Then i started helping the local keeper on the rearing field / gamefarm . I never thought about keepering for a living , i didnt think it would pay . Then one day the keeper says "if this job come up would you be interested ?" I said if i could make it pay ,cos ive
  4. The amount of natural food and mild weather , meant i found it difficult to get my birds on the feed and concentrated where i wanted them . I switched my feeding regime from spinning to hoppers and minolas . I was spinning wheat only to see it left on the ground and start chitting ! On shoot days it also meant that i was having to blank in much larger areas to get the birds in the drives . Having said that , the spring and summer were very kind and the birds released with few problems . Also my cover crops did better than previous years . Interestingly
  5. rabies? Rabies???? when i got taught i watched and learned, all the terriermen i have had the pleasure of watching have always used their hands which if done properly is as safe as anything, i haven't been bitten yet, you may disagree but i got taught many years ago that if ye not willing to get ye hands dirty then you shouldn't be in the game, and as for the rabies surely the dogs would be the first sufferers of that??? Hands ? The only thing that should go down the hole is the barrel of a gun !
  6. Just had a similar problem . If its not going to cause a problem , get the dog to the vet . They may well prescribe Advocate which is a pipette applied to the skin , and will cope with a lot of parasitic problems . If for some reason a trip to the vets is not realistic for some reason . Get hold of some ivomec if possible and give it a dose of that , I would not wait , i would take action now .
  7. I thought i was communicating with J R Hartley then lol
  8. Whatever floats your boat . And i am not knocking anyone that reloads . Its just that i think that i shoot my fair share of foxes , last year i shot 32 on the shoot and another 23 on some chicken and sheep farms . With a couple of zeroing sessions thats just over 3 boxes at £19.99 a box . and i missed 2 which were long shots . Thats with Sako 223 through a CZ 527 .
  9. The guy is asking for advice on bullet selection . I have used privi and they are a good budget round in 308 , but the sako 223 50grn will be very good in his Tikka . He is asking advice , and i am saying that sako is a good bullet choice to start with , yes over time he may well find a round that best suits his rifle . But to start off he wont go far wrong with Sako or Norma if he can get them .
  10. Thats great mate , well done , you are rightly proud , no better feeling . And the pictures put me in mind of my first russel . But he was f---ing useless .LOL
  11. I guarantee that you will be hard pushed to improve on Sako 50 grs gamehead , you might improve groups if you reload your own ,but that is under bench rest shooting conditions . Real life shooting in the field , at sensible ranges they are the best .
  12. I gave up terriers and lurchers in the early 90s , got into game shooting , spaniels , and never looked back . Started keepering in 2007 and all of a sudden i had a lot of guys with terriers wanting to be my best mate . Went out with them and realised what i was missing . What im saying is , if you throw yourself into game shooting , you may not miss terriers . But to me there is no substitute for the respect you have for a good terrier . The rumble under your feet , and the sound of a steady bay ! Good luck in whatever you do , but if you go into spaniels dont go half hearted , spend some mo
  13. i remember being at a russell club meeting one member a well known russell and hunt terrierman gave a long speech on how the kc would be the ruination of the russell and how we should avoid it like the plague and how we should try and stop it ----- years later having missed the boat re kc reg he started his own russell club presented records and pedigrees and via the irish kc joined up for the money------ his pups went up from 200 to 500 overnight. thing is theres nothing to stop the show mob showing at kc shows or working terrier shows -------- will it be the ruination of the working patt n
  14. Just watched it . A friend of mine just got a teckel of Mr Didrickson , and he uses them as a mooching - bushing dog that will if it puts something to ground have a go . He at no time measures them against a serious earth dog . They have a great nose and will hunt a drag for miles . Horses for courses i say . That said those guys on the vid should hang their heads in shame , cowboys with no respect . Why drag the fox out to stab it ? Why continue filming a wounded fox being worried ? Beyond belief ....Morons .

  17. . Sailing gear. Ive got them never tried them on anything but a boat. I dont care sailing or whatever , they keep you dry , and you can work in them . I spend a lot of time on a quad and have never had a wet arse with these , if they are good enough for crashing through waves on the high seas , they can cope with rain and puddles !. Eh mate never a truer word spoken and i can bear testiment to that fact just have not used them for hunting. As ive got other gear. Like you said colours but my bb is dark blue but coat is brigh yellow and light up in the dark and id be scared of the. Life jacket g

  20. There is a Musto outlet near me selling BR1 bib and braces for £95.00 they are the dogs , wear them all day , on a quad "no wet arse" feeding , digging , whatever , money well spent . Downside is the colour , Red or navy blue . But hey , animals are colour blind !
  21. You say that but , half of the articles have already been in EDRD , so ive stopped CMW .
  22. A Plummer psuedonym (spelling) Cheers. D. from when he pissed terrier lads off and hid under another name seriously ? I didnt know that . true--he used to write for the shooting times/news using it and even slagged dbp himself off ... Just had a flick through said book and noticed he refers to Plummer "no greater ratter ever drew breath".Self praise is no recomendation , aint that the truth !

  24. I know there are a lot of books out there on variouse branches of dog work , but lets be honest , most people who buy working terrier books have a fair idea about whats involved , its a bit like ferreting ,only with a dog . Chuck a dog down a hole and wait , if it bolts either shoot it or catch in a net , if it dosent bolt you use a locator and dig , apart from stressing the case that you must be careful when breaking through , i dont know what else can be added . Ok that is a very simplistic view , and there is more to it than that , but it is best learnt in the field , and from someone who
