  1. I have recently stocked a small pond {30 meters x 40 meters} and 3 meters deep at one end with 1 meter shallows at the other . I have stocked it with carp , about 100 in all , rangeing from fingerlings to about 8 oz and 4 of about 2llb . Question , can the pond hold more fish ? What is the best food for them to grow them on ? How much food and how often ? Do you continue to feed through the winter ? Any advice is welcome , i am new to fish keeping .
  2. They only kill like that when they encounter livestock in un-natural numbers , they go into a frenzy, killing, half burying the bodys , biting heads off . They are only acting out of an instinct to kill now and try to carry off and store for later . But all too often all that we see is the carnage thats left , and we compare a wild animal with our own morals and just see wanton destruction . I used to take fox kills really personally and see to it that i got revenge . But the years have made me more philosophical , and while i do deal with problem foxes , its not personal, and i dont seek t
  3. Vermin is just a word we use to describe a creature that we detest because it carries desease and damages crops and food ! I have spent most of my life pitting my wits against foxes and have nothing but admiration for them . I would not call them vermin , they are too noble a creature to be given such a lable . But when mans interests and charlies clash , he must come second , of that there is no question !!! As for night vision and all other modern gizmos , we are in an age now when time and effort , fieldcrarft , knowledge of your quarry , will not matter so much when we just have to go out
  4. was going to get some just in case ,we hopefuly wont need it ! also flubenvet is on prescription isn't it? so would take time to get !does flubenvet only come in the pellets? Flube is off prescription now and also comes in liquid !
  5. Ha ha. Foxed me. I'm guessing you're either visiting the UK or don't live in Aus anymore. No mate 'still here in Aus whys that...? Well if it was an English wood then you must have either moved back or been visiting, unless of course you have some secret time portal in the woods - this side Aus that side Pommy land... I dont think I follow what your saying mate..? You just said that the fox came from England? Yep I said it looked like an English wood and above you said it was. That clearly indicates you're in England. He thinks you refer to t
  6. The whole cull is going to fail !!!! I know some of the "marksmen" involved and they are guys who signed up for it because they dont have much shooting permission !! One is a plumber , the other a factory worker , with little experience !!! I shoot at night on land with a lot of badgers . Some nights you see a lot , {when its raining and they are out after slugs , worms and snails} but on the whole i dont see them all that often . To be a success the guys are going to have to be out all night for weeks !!! Farmers should be allowed to deal with them as they see fit , in my area the cattle have
  7. do you know if the dog liquid and sheep one is the same ? Yes panacur is Fenbendazole , you can buy 1 ltr of panacur for cattle , sheep and horse for about £55-£60 . But the exact same medicine bottled for dogs costs about £20 for 100ml, that is some mark up !!!!! Panacur can be used for game birds but Flubenvet is better !!
  8. I was given a 5 year old bitch , which had a good reputation .Because of the owners change of domestic situation he could no longer keep it . When i first took her out and run her on a rabbit she yipped and yapped at every turn , to say i was dissapointed was an understatement !! But i kept her and gradually as her fittness improved [she was a bit overweight] she stopped . It was just down to frustration , in not being able to catch rabbits she would have easily caught when fit !!!! A T B
  9. I am not up with the law on terrier work in Ireland , but when i was younger and there were less restrictions on what we did with terriers , i would not kill every fox i dug or bolted , i wanted to test my terriers , and would release the vast majority , so long as they were healthy . You cant expect to find foxes if you kill every one you come across ! don`t you get what i am saying, sport is no longer an acceptable reason for either shooting or digging, justification is only possible with a firm reason, theres no way any argument for either terrier work or shooting could be won on the g

  11. Lets say you start to incubate tomorrow then they should hatch 24 - 25 days , that takes you to the 14 - 15 sept then you start shooting 19 - 20 weeks , i reckon you could start to shoot them the last week in January !!!! Like Burnie said you are too late . Get some poults in , if you are on a budget ask your local game farmer if he has any birds that he has kept back to bring on a bit . Sometimes when they send birds out , they have small or runty birds which are poorly feathered which they dont send out to customers , they put them in a seperate pen and bring em on a bit , You can sometimes
  12. When i get mine at 6 or 7 weeks they go on early growers which has a higher protien , i think about 23% .Then on to growers till about 12 weeks .then poult release , for as long as i can . But while you should have introduced wheat to them by trailing it about the pen and out side the pen you will find that the poults will scatter and waste a lot of wheat looking for pellets when you do change over ! 13. Am i being thick , but i cant tell from the photo what caliber it is !! 17 mate Thanks !! Looks like a good outing !!!!

  15. Its just this sort of barbaric picture that makes me sick!!!! What kind of monster are you ? I hope you are proud of yourself ??
  16. Have you ever tried to catch a rabbit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Sick or wounded animals are far easier to catch, foxes like anyother wild animal have to wiegh up the pros and cons effort v reward. I know thats a very simple way to put it but its the quickest way i can think of. I am not saying they dont take healthy rabbits cos i know they do i have seen it, but a healthy rabbit it not a large part of a foxes diet, they mainly eat worms, frogs, grubs and stuff like that and of coarse chickens but healthy rabbits are a bit of a challenge. Can you imagine the look on the cubs faces when mum or dad
  17. If we are on the subject of 101 things to do with a dead fox , anyone with a pond could try this . I hang a dead fox over the flight ponds which ive stocked with tiny carp , (the keepers son on a neighboring shoot caught them in their lakes ) before anyone thinks ive got pots of money ! The maggots drop from the dead charlie into the hungry mouths of tiny carp , soon to be hopefully big carp , if the Herons dont get em .
  18. Wow! How much are the federal factory rounds Charlie caller? How much does it cost to reload as well? Per shot that is. Cheers, Mitch I have not bought any factory loads for a while mate, but 20 ish quid for twenty, I recon I can reload .243 for about 35 pence per bang, so .223 will be a little cheaper, say 30 pence, you will not go wrong with a Weatherby/Howa mate, best value rifles in the country. I too have a Weatherby in 243 and agree it is very accurate , but i did modify the trigger as i found it a bit heavy . I also fitted a PES sound mod , harris bi pod , a schimitt and be
  19. Years ago when they introduced wheelie bins in our area , i could tell straight away by the amount of foxes that turned up on my patch , there arnt as many people feeding them as you think , and with the wheelie bins in our area not many scraps , i know some old dears do feed them but a litter of cubs get through a lot of grub !!
  20. Funny thing is after i saw those two bucks , it seems to have gone off the boil a bit , although i was watching a buck today at a distance of about 20 yards , i got some twigs in my hand and broke them up , and he charged at me , so the testosterone is rising !!
  21. Yes I am also getting slightly depressed by the lack of Rabbits in my locality, now I am sure that last years crap summer will have affected things and last year was a poor breeding year, with many warrens being flooded out, in lowland areas prolonged snow has little effect on rabbit numbers and indeed they wax fat on tree bark ect although I accept in upland areas it is a different story, myxy and in some areas vhd will take there toll, but we are talking about one of the most fecund lagamorphs on earth here, with an ability to reproduce at an alarming rate, now I am absolutely convinced that
  22. Hi Mitch,I think that might be too much scope for a 22 rim . On my 22 i have a hawk sport HD 3-9X40 , and its fine .You want to forget all the bins range finders and all the gizmos . Keep it simple , in the field you wont have time to use any knobs and buttons , you just want something to point and shoot ...quick!!!! The scopes that cost money that i mentioned before have superior light gathering . This means that at dawn and dusk when you are most likely to take a shot you will be at an advantage . The best scope i have ever owned , and still have is a schmitt and bender 8x
  23. Some very interesting posts on this subject , i've noticed a lack of foxes myself . i've also noticed smaller foxes , tiny barren vixens , fewer litters of cubs . Where foxes did have litters , there were bits of dead pheasants around the earths . I also help a mate who keeps large scale free range hens , no problem feeding cubs there either . I dont know what its like elsewhere in the country but by me ,the rabbit population has been down the last couple of years , i wouldnt mind betting its got something to do with lack of food due to a depressed rabbit population and not overshooting
