High And Low Points Of The Season
rob284 replied to Pirate 9000's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
You'll never stop lads coming on. I've had it before, instead of getting upset about it i found better permission. Rather that than get the police involved. -
If its bred right size usually isn't an issue.

High And Low Points Of The Season

the younger generation isn't as lucky to be in the golden age of terrier work, maybe that's due to a minority of the older generations actions. Without the younger lads there will be no future for terrierwork, its up to the older generation to show them the correct way and f**k off the messers. -

There's a million and one reasons , its not always black and white. From educated stuff that knows the craic to tiny vixens that will squeeze 20ft up a rabbit tube to get away from a dog. If you are saying you get everything, every time. Then you're the first terrier man Ive known to say it.depends if your doing it for sport or for pest control. I would respect the foxes efforts and give it best if it managed to squeeze 20ft up a tight rabbit tube were the dog hadn't a chance of fitting. -
I can't believe it when lads spend £250 on boots then don't look after them and wonder why they drop to bits , it madness!I think its the most common factor in most said 'boot failure'that and kicking the shit out of a shovel when you can use a graft of fork.

I bought the meindl burma boots and they didn't last long, they soon fell to pieces. I Recently bought a pair of hanwag alaska and they're top quality. But you cant beat the fell boot Imo.

High And Low Points Of The Season

High point for me is gaining some top permission. Bad point, I had a pup that didn't work out. I couldn't get him to travel, i had a feeling he didn't have it in him but I gave him enough time. Looking forward to the next season with a youngster ready to go. -
Ferry to the north and back. Avoids any hassle with passports.

Depends what the dog is used to, work wise. If the dog develops a style due to consistently working one job. Then it comes across something different, it may make harder work of it.

Weve all done it by diging too early and dog is not with its quarry properly but ive seen it happen with dogs siting of there quarry,i like to hear a bit of rumbling before breakthrough as then you know the dog is with its quarry. The tone of voice says alot too if you know the dog.the pace at which the dog is baying too. It's great listening and understanding what's going on down there.

nothing wrong with an initial puff of black smoke when you boot it. It's when it constantly pours it out when you press the pedal, that's when its bollixed. Also give the body a good rocking and listen for any knocks, if it knocks, a few bushes will be needed for the next mot. Check oil cap for any creamy mayo looking stuff, if so stay away, head gasket will have gone. Also sniff the oil for any diesel in it, could mean problems.

He's off here mate thought he just wasn't on it for a while but I think he's gone altogether unfortunately. general ive PM'D you.
-
Looks like a good do! That dog looks like a type I've seen before, AT what's your initials, pm if you like.
-
do the tubes run through the chalk or do they run underneath it in a seam of softer ground?
-
That's the thing, some were definitely too hard for Pigs back in the day if you wanted them to have a decent stint as a working dog. But we rated the fox dogs as yellow back then.what's your point?
-
that would depend on what you require of your dogs.
-
in your opinion did he breed better workers with this method? Or did they only suit a hunt terrierman.
-
Anyone else had experience from breeding baying types and culling hard dogs over many generations. What is the outcome compared with breeding from a hard dog? Do you still get the steady types or does it lead to standoffish workers?
-
that's it. In my village id say theirs about 10 lads who check earths locally so everything has moved off and they don't hold no more. That's why I don't bother locally.
-
Cracking pic that.

Last season I was travelling 2 and half hours for a poor bit of permission on steep fells, started to annoy me. Changed direction this season and im 50 minute away from decent ground. I enjoy travelling to different places as its something different for dog and man.

All this talk of kicking doors down and sending lads round is a step too far and if your resorting to that, your just as bad as the fella that f****d you over. Just my opinion.
