    If you are happy with the type then why not look for a similar type? If you start putting saluki or collie blood in you are likely to change the type altogether. Dont gamble or think its useless to plan like some on here,but think about what you want. If it were me I would be looking for a beddy whippet stud dog so I had some notion of what the pups might look and act like. Get a strain going in years to come and you will have something to be proud of instead of swapping and changing.

    TCP is a good one for fresh wounds as I dont think all antibacterial solutions work where there is fresh blood,but I know TCP does.

    Cooking for your dogs or preparing the grub is part of the bond I think. The other thing is how do people know by feeding all in ones that they are getting the same out of there dogs,its hard to tell without sophisticated timing equipment,and what about a dogs happiness.A happy dog works better and what dog would choose to eat bag food when he could get some proper meat and veg. If all you can be bothered with is opening a bag you are missing a part of keeping working dogs. Peter that grub looks top stuff mate.

    If the dog has good feet then the rest is bad luck because you are hunting woodland. I like a dogs feet to be the right shape but also strongly built with thick pads and thick strong nails. The best feet for me are like a deerhounds feet or a fox hounds. To be honest the type of injury you describe could happen to the best feet,but dogs need regular exercise to strengthen tendons bone etc.

    Sounds like you lads all have young dogs and thats great,you can hope for the best,but if you get a really good one then you wont want to loose that blood,although most will anyway by continual outcrossing when they do breed,but you will always get upsets and disappointments with any livestock,but you should still plan,in fact if you are keen how do you not plan in your head. Gaz,you advise against planning and then lay your plans out that are in your head....see its hard not to if you are keen.

    If you want to learn about Hancocks dogs you should read his book 'a qestion of lurchers' He is a honest bloke. I have talked with him,and read his book and owned his dogs and thats how I know his dogs are not for me. He as never bred a true strain of lurcher and he is the first to admit it. He produces crosses that are fairly predictable in looks at least but who cannot be relied upon to produce the same again when bred to each other, which if you think about it is good for business.     Three or four is better imo,no use running a dog stale or going back from injury too early even minor ones.

    Pups always do better in the summer mate. Its a bit obvious if you think about it. They can go outside earlier and get the rays and vitamin D for starters. Ive bred blackberry litters but its a lot easier in the warmer months..thats why all the wild do it then.

    Making plans is half the fun once or if you get hooked properly. I have a few dogs and theyre all related to each other. You should only keep what you have room for but if you have lots of time you dont need as much room. Its good to concentrate on one dog and certainly best if you are a beginner with dogs. I would choose a dog mainly because he doesnt come in season twice a year if you are only keeping one but if you want to breed your own then start with a bitch from the best you can get and dont waste time worrying or haggling about money like a lot seem to do.     Just out of interest what does the vet do to pass your dog fit? I mean how does he examine it?

    He needs more food but I cook mine,escpecially in winter. Make a stew with beef,lamb, veg,cabbage leeks etc and add some of your gain or other as a biscuit with the gravy when its cooked. You can use mince or cut meat up.Use whats available but dont feed cooked bones. A nice stew and a warm bed and you will see him gain some weight. Increase or decrease daily by looking at the dog and his condition.

    Thanks for replies lads. Moxy thats a good tip thanks. Its not the straight shanks but when im trying to get a nice head from a base or main stem. Ive also been told to dry the stick standing up with the thickest end pointing downward,so i will try the wax with it aswell.

    that's it Jim, get them out as soon as there jabbed up , my younger dog was out at 9 weeks old, he knew what stock were, fences ,ditches etc he deff learned all his field craft. And as seen rabbits from young age when he did start run couple at 6 months old it was no big deal for him, ive never looked back with him , ive had good bags as ive said on my thread, and he take any quarry that he put on, he very calm dog when not working, but full on when does work, get them out when pups you wont hurt them , you not pushing them, pups will play all day long its just extension of that

    With the season being mild and still like autumn would it be safe to cut sticks now to start drying? Hoping to hear from an experienced stick maker. Ive cut plenty of blackthorn in october before that has split across the grain. I think this because ive cut too early,so should it be alright now?

    The facts are there whether you want to see them or not. I think what you talking about is a dog learning to use itself which is fine and how it should be,but that is different to full power chasing. Pups are fine to go out and learn but when they reach an age where there muscles are strong but the skeleton hasnt finished developing then damage which is sometimes serious can occur. If you want to start using something before the glue is fully set then carry on,but what does your brain tell you about that?
