  1. Hi Dan, I have a 22 Hornet and my pal has a 17 Hornet. If you're only shooting out to 200 yards there's not a lot in it. Any further and I'd suggest the 17 Hornet has the edge. Having said all that, I'm going to develop a load for the 22 Hornet using 40gr V-Max. If I can get this up to 3,000fps it may well keep up with the 17 Hornet. From a cost perspective, you should be able to pick up a cheap 22 Hornet and barrel wear doesn't seem to be too much of an issue. I picked mine up for £150 from my local RFD who also shortened the barrel by 1" to remove the open sights and screwcut. He
  2. I've shot rabbits out to 187 yards with my 22 CZ. Great rifle and regularly groups well under 1" at 100 yards using Eley Subs. Sacked off the HMR once I'd bought it
  3. When I looked into reloading for the first time I was overwhelmed by the minefield of information. Once I got my head around the basics and gathered all the necessary equipment I had every intention to do a video series demonstrating how I reload, aimed at beginners. I finally got around to that this week and here it is: *caveat: if it's not what you do then that's fine. This is a clip demonstrating my method which I find pretty simple and has proven successful for me* 1. 2 3.
  4. If fox is on the cards I'd suggest you go for a small centrefire and reload to keep the ammo costs down (25p per round in my 22 Hornet) or go for a rimfire with a little bit more welly like the WMR and keep the fox ranges sub 100 yards
  5. Yeah that probably about right, its around the same cost to reload as buying factory HMR rounds. The only difference being that it's infinitely more capable due to the extra energy
  6. Thanks Charlie, it's performing really well. In fact I've found it really easy to develop a good load. Incidentally, I haven't crimped any of the rounds. A good dechamfer helps the flat base bullets to get seated. Without that I think it would be difficult to seat the bullets in the mouth of the case
  7. Here's the vermin control footage: https://youtu.be/Zow_dv-d_Kc
  8. Happy with how my Hornet performed at 100 yards today. Took my first rabbit and woodpigeon at 120 yards. The headshot rabbit was, shall we say, humane! Think I'm settled on a load using the 35gr V-Max. 12.5gr of Lil Gun; Winchester Brass, CCI BR4 primers and a COAL of 1.730 which, fortunately, just fits in the CZ mag. The shot on the left was the aim point and three shots fell within the group on the right:
  9. Thanks chaps, it was a great day out. Cheers for the comments Alsone, I know they were made with the best of intentions. The V-Max bullets that I shooting in the centrefire clip are incredibly frangible, in fact I've yet to hear or see one richochet in hundreds of rounds. That being said, caution should always be taken and ensuring suitable backstops is of course paramount. Rest assured, all risks were considered and mitigated by the shooter and at no point were any people, or livestock, in any danger. In terms of wind drift, this is miminal with a 223 and 243 and it would have to be a
  10. Here's a couple of clips from a day out shooting with Jonny from Point Of Impact TV: https://youtu.be/-xHRohd6W-o https://youtu.be/1FGpC0HzXAQ
  11. What load did you settle on Elliot with the 35gr max? Haven't trialed any more since this development, Ian. Will be loading some more and taking it out to 100 yards tomorrow; in-between the rain showers!
  12. Yes, it's a CZ457. Grouping quite well too at 50M. This is a 4 shot group
  13. That's some shooting without a rest!
  14. Aye, me too. I'm still experimenting yet but I've tried 35gr V-Max and 40gr Nosler Ballistic Tips. So far the V-Max have come out on top at 50M. The problem with the CZ is that the mag size is quite small so you're limited to a cartridge length of around 1.730"
  15. That'll do then! Just playing with loads for my 22 Hornet now. 12.4gr of Lil Gun behind a 35gr V-Max seems to do the job
  16. Have you played about with the COAL? These were my groups at 100yds playing with powder weights. Still a bit more refinement needed but still pretty good
  17. It seems that you're using the same powder and bullets as me walshie. I've loaded mine 10 thou off the lands at 2.285" and I'm using CCI BR4 primers. I've found these to be more consistent so give them a whirl too. Interesting that you're at a similar powder weight as my good groups. I haven't found any pressure signs up to 25grs but the grouping did open up
  18. My CZ452 wasn't a fan of the Winchester's unfortunately. Eley all day long for me
  19. I have one on mine and it's very quiet! Compared it to a Wildcat T8 over the weekend and couldn't tell them apart. Honestly, you don't need anything more
  20. Thanks chaps. It's where I want to shoot with it really. I've got a few bits of land where the Hornet is better suited, including around the village where I live and a local golf course. It's a nice, handy carry rifle instead of the T3 Varmint in 223
  21. Yesterday I picked up a secondhand 22 Hornet from my local gun shop. I had the open sights at the font removed and to tidy the end of the barrel and had the barrel cut back by 2" and screwcut. It's now 20" It's an older example with a double set trigger but it's a minter with a gorgeous stock. The rifle came with a box of Winchester ammo so I'll be out tomorrow to zero my scope and see how it performs. Not expecting too much from the factory ammo as I'll be reloading. Before I go out and buy all the Hornet specific gear I though I'd ask those who are experienced in
