  1. Elliot, hornets are "so very last month" now, we have moved on to 6.5 x 55 v 25/06, do try to keep up! Of course Ian, sorry I shouldn't have chirped in
  2. I'll be picking a 22 Hornet up next week. Should be a handy little rifle for the smaller fields and on the golf club
  3. Been looking at refilling my HMR slot today too now that Spring is round the corner. A nice CZ452 16" sporter barrel will do the trick for me. Not too badly priced secondhand either
  4. I was considering just that last night Alsone
  5. I popped out today with two rifles, the 223 to test out some homeloads and 22LR to harvest some rabbits. Unhappy with my 223 groups I turned to the 22LR to concentrate on the rabbits. After checking the CZ452 zero at 50yds I dropped a rabbit at 30yds and the next at 96yds with just under 2 mil-dots of holdover on my Hawke Frontier 3-9x40. Both taken with clean headshots. What a cracking little tool. I'm going to give the 223 a rest for a few weeks now and start enjoying the 22LR again. It really is a joy to use being accurate, recoiless and almost totally silent. A perfect rabbit harv
  6. What's he got for sale Dan and how much?
  7. I slipper, haven't got a Hornet yet but I hope to soon. I imagine 100yds would be the standard zero range
  8. Thanks Alsone, still above my price range unfortunately. I wish I could claim the VAT back too. Despite having relatives who live on farms, I don't
  9. Why not just save yourself the hunt and get a .17 Hornet? http://www.shootinguk.co.uk/reviews/rifle/cz-527-17-hornet Too expensive, even on the secondhand market
  10. If the ranges are sensible the 22LR seems to do the job. Must admit, it's the first one I've shot with it. I've got a 223 and on the lookout for a 22 Hornet which will be better suited to the golf course and the land near my house
  11. Nipped out on the golf course to see how the rabbit numbers are. Not a single rabbit seen but a few foxes knocking about. I passed on the first two, including a young cub and dropped this one at 50 yards with a nicely placed Eley sub, just above and between the eyes. Was in nice order too [/url]
  12. Nice one. I need to find some low velocity ammo for squirrel bashing. Might check out the Z Langs
  13. Personally, buy the Tikka, and then save up and reload when you have a few more pennies I seem to spend more and go through far more ammo now that I'm reloading!
  14. As far as I know, if you come across a Fox (with your FEO's permission) you can shoot it. If say a farmer call you to look for and if found shoot fox, it has to specify this as a condition on your FAC, no matter what the caliber. Are you sure on this David? I specifically requested a less restrictive ticket due to having good reason. I recieved an Open Certificate back with AOLQ against all calibres from 22LR - 243
  15. Obviously minimal recoil, if none existent at all, so it should be manageable. What kind of accuracy are you managing? Edited to add: Cracking looking rifle by the way!
  16. How's the accuracy, you using factory ammo or reloading?
  17. Aigle are the best wellies I've had. Handmade in France, very flexible, soft rubber and great for walking in. I got the neoprene lined ones for £. No regrets whatsoever. Here's a video of them being made in the factory:
  18. Decided to treat myself today to a little handy knife for gutting rabbits and dressing small game. I know you can damn near use a Stanley knife for gutting but I wanted something a bit better that I could look after and enjoy using. I've gone through allsorts over the years from pen knives to leathermans and Moras but I think the A.Wright & Son skinning knife is probably the most handy knife I've had yet. It's carbon steel, has a rosewood handle, not too big, looks like it will hold a good edge, seems decent quality and looks easy enough to sharpen. Should be perfect for small game
  19. I'll post here when I've tried it Elliott. Why did you get rid of the hmr? A bit of an enigma in that half the users think it's the best thing since sliced bread whilst the other half are either fed up with the lack of ammo or flaws in the ammo itself. Paul It wasn't so much about ammo problems, although I did experience a few squib rounds. Considering I shot over 1,000 rounds you might consider that reasonable. The main reason for selling was just to move up to 223 for a proper fox calibre. I fancied a Tikka T3 Varmint and had a bit of value in my Anschutz 1517 HMR. I then bought a
  20. I haven't tried any supersonic ammo in my 22LR so I'd be curious to know how you get on. I had a HMR but sold it and bought a 223. The WMR might be a good option for you. I think its having a bit of a comeback, especially now that there's more ammo available for it. I understand Hornady are doing a 30-odd grain V-Max that's getting good reviews. The advantage of the WMR is that it's capable for the odd sub 100 yard fox too. I've been toying with replacing the HMR with either a WMR or 22 Hornet
  21. I've nothing to add, other than you lucky b*****d
  22. Thanks Deker, I've read that whilst the Mossberg is a copy it's not quite as accurate as the Marlin which is quite interesting. They are very cheap and could be good fun by the looks of things
  23. Read good things about these little Semi-autos. Apparently the accuracy is spot on and very cheap to buy. Tempted to pick one up. Anybody here any experience with them?
  24. I'm due to send my cert back, hopefully to have it opened. When I contacted them they did tell me that they had quite a large backlog
  25. The Eley subs in my CZ452 don't seem to be grouping as well as they did. I put it down to cleaning the barrel (shouldn't have touched it) but perhaps it's the ammo?
