  1. TFS, I have heard of a few white moles being caught over the years although I have never caught one myself. It must be a bit of a shock turning the trap over to see that OTC
  2. I tried doing cherry brandy in the same way but it didn't really 'work' - it still tasted like brandy with some cherry escence in it rather than a liquer as the sloe gin becomes. Perhaps I did something wrong but it was pretty unsuccessful really. OTC
  3. Zips sent to your addy Ditch ~ not sure if I have done it right ( ) but try them OTC
  4. Me too - not that I am an afficienado of long netting by any means. I had some 3" nickel fox net rings welded to 8 inch steel pins years ago and they are what I use on my webs. OTC
  5. Cheesecloth shirts, leather ties, grand-dad collars, white socks, . . . Sounds like a snapshot of Chalk Warren's wardrobe doesn't it?? OTC
  6. Why get 'trained' to use a substance that will land you up in jail? Surely there must be other appropriate and certainly legal alternatives to use of the above chemicals?? Maybe I am wrong but I was sure that Strychnine finally went out last September time from the molecatcher's arsenal?? And other nasty substances long before that . . ?? OTC
  7. I thought alphacloralose, strychnine and the pesticide poisons were strictly banned now?? OTC
  8. I was going to ask that Borderboy - maybe it is a term for something I call something else? So what is it Netrigger?? OTC
  9. The real old recipes for sloe gin say to pick the fruit after the first frosts, this is because the chemicals in the berries controlling the flavour and acidity change. I have had the best results with bagging up the sloes in a freezer bag and freezing them for a few days, then defrost and put into your demi-john or bottle with the gin and sugar. The fruit is much softer and you don't have to spend hours pricking them either! Like those above I have also used Lidl or similar gin with as good results as when I used Gordon's. The longer you can leave the fruit in the liquid the better too IM
  10. Have a good one Nik, and keep your head down wherever you are!! OTC
  11. I have caught a rat and weasel at the same time before and have a pic of a stoat and rabbit in a Fenn somewhere too, but never two rats. I think the double catch in a Little Nipper is commonplace - my 'amateur pest controller' mother caught a pair a few weeks ago - must be through setting the traps too 'thick'. OTC
  12. Animals (or people) need to be rewarmed/cooled gradually in this situation. Immersion in cold water for hot ferrets might not be quite as bad as immersing in hot water for cold ferrets/people but it is still dangerous. Gradual is the key word, things must be done slowly to avoid cold shock (vice versa) killing the patient rather than the heat stress itself. OTC
  13. I saw the aftermath in a release pen on a shoot that neighboured mine once where 400 birds were killed in one night by a hungry vixen looking for earthworms . . . OTC
  14. I know exactly what you mean ChalkWarren, the ground will shake when it happens too, I think there will be a lot of unhappy trappers out there OTC
  15. I will be glad to help you value them and give you some more info, please PM me and when I am properly back on line I will look into it for you. OTC
  16. Ladies and Gents, Thanks for the birthday wishes - I am offline Internet at the moment and have had to pop into the library to get on. I am not 99 but feel like it some days!!! See you soon Ditch!! OTC
  17. Scissors for me - I learned to trap moles in sandy soil and the scissor traps set better for me, coupled with the fact that I didn't see Duffus half tunnels until much later on, like Ditch. OTC
  18. I also thought he'd passed away long ago. I met him a couple of times and listened to one of his lectures once which was quite an inspiring experience. I wouldn't say he had 'turned anti' but he did refine his views on certain sports although he spent many years as a youngster persuing the very same as the rest of us. I suppose I should just be glad that he signed my first editions of his books for me shouldn't I? OTC
  19. Have a good day CW, don't go too mad with the vino and vindaloo OTC
  20. LL - Buy (but do not copy!!) the DVD and 2 dozen peg snares from Woodga and save the guesswork - believe me, you will be glad that you did. I have caught many thousands of rabbits in wires over the years and was reluctant to change my ways but Snareman and Woodga have improved my game no end. OTC
  21. Doxhope, It must have been a blackbird then, but it was a hen so I guess there wouldn't be the pale edges to the feathers on those would there?? OTC
  22. Perhaps it was one then - it certainly had the markings in the right place and the upland area I saw it seems right - up there with the grouse, stonechats and wheatears. OTC
  23. I saw a hen blackbird that looked for all the world like a hen ring ouzel (with the bleached out collar) yesterday when I was out on the hills - maybe it was one but I thought they were pretty much extinct in mainland Britain (?) OTC
