  1. agree sometimes better to watch it instead of trying to understand it from a book if you inexperienced training lurchers. the retrieving training tips on the dvd are very good in my opinion atb.
  2. if you put the sensible effort in with a pup you wont look back. good luck when you get the pup.
  3. seen a few 1st cross beddie/whippets work decent markers/rabbiting dogs. a good friend had a 1st cross beddie/greyhound watched it work from time to time from a young dog till retirement. good rabbit dog 1st class nose. took daytime hares from time to time hunting up. a dog who found its own game a nice dog to have around good temperament. it retrieved well. training wise he didnt have much trouble with it.
  4. some of my permission borders on a public footpath. had problems with dogs and owners not very pleasant at times know how you feel.
  5. collie x whippet/greyhound make a good/ferreting/lamping dog. all the best when you get your pup.
  6. each and every man to their own. some people will strive for the best. some are very competetive.my opinion was my dogs only had to please me and if they did i was a happy man.
  7. it all depends on how serious the individual person is. some people accept how things turn out. some people wont accept second best.
  8. can laugh about it now but at the time i was only a young lad 23 i thought my lurcher world had come to a end. it didnt happen again and the dog retrieved well the rest of its working life.
  9. dont despair seen pups do all manner of things with their first catches and come good. i would just take a bit of time out give it some retrieves dead rabbits try again. i had a collie grey first catch killed it then cocked its leg and pissed on it and i am not joking. i can laugh about it now but at the time i couldnt beleive it happened.young dogs can do all manner of things when catching their first rabbits. if trained to retrieve as young dogs with dummys then dead rabbits early problems as the pup matures should get better.
  10. agree 2bob cant beat a good machete thanks for the tip about welders gloves.
  11. some people have never used longnets or dont know how to me included. prior preparation of the ground [clearing] would mean a days ferreting rather than not having one.
  12. i also dream of open land ferreting. if the farmer needs rabbits controling i have to clear areas thick bramble in woodland etc.
  13. will it or wont it this will only be found out if they are tried over a period of time. dont write anything off until it has had a fair crack at the job.
  14. all the best with your recovery i bet it was good to be out again.
  15. follow your own instincts you own the dog. you will know when the dog is ready.
  16. its not good when you lose them.sorry about your daughter she will bounce back and hopefully have another favourite soon.atb.
  17. if she is timid you need to bond with her gain her confidence socialise her in different situations.dont rush it there is plenty of time. she is only 12 weeks old atb with her.
  18. what a refreshing change a lad who will give the young dog a chance. if he never does reds and i am not saying he wont in time. if you are happy with your dog stick with him put the effort in and i am sure he will repay you.
  19. how many greyhounds are tested in the field these days not the track before being bred from?
  20. i cant take the piss mr.roxy as i used to wear similar clothes myself 25 yrs ago.
  21. have heard of collie lurchers picking their runs never owned one. half beardie dog always give 100% as did 3/4 grey 1/4 collie. prefer 3/4 cross more versatile than a 1/2 cross without losing intelligence.
  22. horses for courses day time mooching on hares 1 dog. lamping rabbits 1 dog. aspot of bushing lurcher and terrier combination.worked dogs on my own 90% of the time.
