  1. to answer [the one] i understand about being a bit more ruthless but it depends on the person how much effort they want to put in. some animals are fast starters some are slow. a fast starter does not always make the best worker in my opinion. to [terriermanjohn].years ago i had a ferret who acted like yours. had him from a kit plenty of handling put him down empty 2/3 hole burrows no problem. when trying him on marked burrows he didnt want to know.when you say you never put a ferret down at arms length to quote you it wont know what is going on bite etc.on the other side of the coin it worked
  2. when i am saying this what i mean do this if the dog has marked. that is if the dog is a good marker.
  3. when you put him to ground put him arms length down the hole and keep your arm in till it goes . if it doesnt go use the same procedure at the other holes until it does. with some ferrets early doors it may take a bit of time but dont give in too early .give him a season before writing him off. i have only been to scotland a few times and i am 46 but you certainly live in the right part of the country for some good sport.
  4. no its not sad i have my ferrets in the kitchen for a hour every night. all my mates are not into dogs ferrets etc think there is wrong with me ?
  5. i know what you mean when you say you think the ferret doesnt have it in him. years ago i had a hob like this it acting the prick for a few months it came good eventually. i went out for a full season with a mate with a silver jill useless second season it came round and didnt look back become a good little worker dont write him off too soon time and patience some take to it straight away some need time. all the best for the new year.
  6. i agree being out is the main thing catches are a bonus. good luck with the ferret im sure it will come good.
  7. i have a mk3 i just prefer the mk1 i have 3 mk1 collars so if i could get the locator repaired it would be a bonus for me.
  8. prefer mk 1 very pricy on ebay but where do you get them repaired. got a old one needs a new dial and recalibrating?
  9. nice to see people getting involved with the sport good luck.
  10. what i do same as the one in the garden. but take the youngster when ferreting when i have finished for the day. i go to a small 2 three holer and let the youngster go in and out i dont net up.when it exists dont rush to pick it up make my way over then gently pick it up.when it enters and exists from another hole let it wander out a couple of yards before picking it up.when it is doing this confidently i will put some nets on. when it comes to the net just lift to one side let it wander a distance before gently picking up. only takes 10 mins at the end when you have finished ferreting. just t
  11. anti-freeze? IQ of a house brick comes to mind.
  12. sorry about the above posts ithought i was on the pets at home forum. im going to go downstairs now and put my bedlington terrier on my lap watch a ferreting dvd to see how it is done give him a little kiss and say good boy. i checked on the ferrets earlier and they still had their wooly jumpers on.
  13. oh and by the way i had lurchers for 20 years and i have had ferrets for 12 years and they were all worked . a animals welfare should always be a top priorty.
  14. i will try to explain a little bit better.some people will have had jills who havent been bred from or brought out of season and will say they had no problems.you may read when a jill is in season the levels of oestrogen[female sex hormone] will build up which can be potentially fatal my vet says this correct.if a jill is left in season her vagina to be polite will stay swollen for several months therefore she could be at risk from infection. so why not bring them out season either by a jill jab or by using a vasectomized hob. me personally would take a vets advice everyday of the week. keep a
  15. i think the examples given were about bringing a jill out of season. not about jills that die because they are left in season.and yes icertainly agree about paying attention to keeping everything clean if you are going to leave it in season. left in season they are more vulnerable to infection and im sure even all us who should be on a pet forum knows were they can get a infection. i prefer to get the jills jabbed rather than leave them in season.
  16. dont worry your confidence will come back spend time with them.sit in the shed with them. handle them everyday.in a few weeks you wont even think about it.
  17. just take your time everyone is in a rush these days people write dogs of to easy. a collie cross should make a good ferreting dog good lamp dog take hunted up long ears.i cant comment on fox or deer because i had no intrest in hunting them at all but that is just me i am sure people have owned collie crosses capable of taking them.bye for now.
  18. a half cross is certainly no hare coursing dog. i have full admiration for coursing dogs and there owners. i just was always out at first light and let the dog hunt up which really years ago was what lurchers were all about one for the pot. things have changed very much over the years. a good half cross will take hunted up hares a three quarter cross will take them easier. people could take me to task about hunted up hares but it is a lot harder than lamped hares in my opinion.
  19. the first dog was collie greyhound chuckles crossed to a greyhound little bess take rabbits day night hares day someone poisoned him when he was 2 years old.second dog beardie remus crossed greyhound peaches take rabbits day night could also take hunted up hares day no problem not bad for a half cross. if you have a hancock dog stick with it put the work in be sensible and im sure you will be more than happy. i had lurchers for over 20 years i am new to this site and forums in general i am 46 years old i cannot beleive how many muppets there are on here stupid comments etc.
  20. i know why everyone slags hancock they think he is in it for the money maybe he is.but if you are new with lurchers and have a hancock pup dont be put off with comments that they will be shite etc. put the effort in training be patient dont overmatchmatch the pup. the more sensible input you put in the more you will get back from your dog.i got 2 dogs off hancock in the late 80s they both did me proud.
  21. a jill jab is a hormone injection which a vet will give to your ferrets.sometimes you may need to get this done twice in a season as i have had ferrets come back into season later in the year after having the first jab. it has only happened twice in the last 10 years, usually after the first jab they have been ok for the season.what i mean by season is the breeding season. usally starts roughly march-april.the best advice i can give you about the jill jab is to talk to a vet.
