  1. A lot of vets will advise on before the first season. Don’t think it’s with the emphasis on working dogs. Looking at all the evidence and speaking to various vets, I would wait until after the first season.
  2. That’s one of the downfalls from spaying. People also say about weight gain but that’s just a case of less food and keeping up the exercise. Think it makes sense to at least let them have a season.
  3. Hopefully people will have something to contribute to this thread. Positive or negative. Something I have been looking into as I might bring a bitch in next and have no wish to breed. I have had various answers. Hardest choice is deciding when to do it. Most vets say after first season. Others say before. Had a couple of people message saying it made no difference to the work ethic/ability. Would also like to hear both sides of the story.
  4. As Vin said. Spoke with him the other week. Hes getting out and doing his thing. Sure he will be back on soon!
  5. Nice litter that will be. Is she mainly a busher or an earth dog?
  6. Yep all depends. I think it made a difference with my busher working along side another one. My lurcher seemed to pick things up by himself. The only thing I think was a help was the distance he ranges and how he hunts open land in the day. I think he definitely picked that up off other dogs. Lamping wise I prefer to take them solo. Think the owners would benefit from a mentor more than the dogs. I know I did. ATB with the pup.
  7. Collie whippet greyhound or a beddy whippet. If it just for ferreting then a smallish dog will suit. If you want to move towards lamping as well and your land has bigger fields, go for something a little bigger. Collie x grey or any lurcher x lurcher type breeding that are doing the work you want.
  8. Kids must have had my phone and put a quick post up!
  9. I wouldn’t be doing much at 3 months. Wouldn’t even be thinking about a lamp. Get the bond right and let it be a pup. Bit of basic training and get it amongst some stock. The rest will come in time. ?
  10. Lots of food for thought. It’s the seasons that bring trouble with a Bitch in a mixed kennel. Something I was aware of. I know people that keep all dog kennels and have also had massive problems.
  11. Cheers. Familiar looking ground!! I have tried to PM you. Your inbox must be full.
  12. When you are out with the pup do you take other dogs? Try it on a long lead (10 meters or so) with the other dogs going about their usual business. Let him mooch about bit the minute he heads for a sheep then ‘check’ it. Quick tug on the lead and a stern no. What Johnrussel says also works for me. What works for one dog won’t work for another. Need a couple of tricks up your sleeve.
  13. Nice trenchfoot. How much Wheaton in there?
  14. Cheers for the replies lads. Good to get some decent feedback from both sides of the fence.
  15. Cheers bud. Most I would ever have is 2 lurchers and 2 bushers. That’s the plan anyway. Don’t think I would ever breed. Trying to find decent homes is a drama. Would rather take my chance and buy one in.
  16. They will be in kennels mate. Her indoors has already chosen a bitch!
  17. That would be my ideal. I think they will both take better to a bitch. ?
  18. Yep my lurcher and busher are best mates. I think another male might cause friction with that though. I have looked after mates bitches before and they have both been fine with them.
  19. Get what you are saying there bird. Only reason I’m bringing in a third one is because I need 2 runners. My lad keeps taking big knocks and has been unlucky with injuries.
  20. Hope to have my mind made up before I go and see the litter. Not totally ruling out a dog pup though.
  21. There’s pros and cons for both. I definitely bond better with bitches. It’s a case of see what choices I have when the pups are born. I don’t really have any faults with the 2 dogs I have. They have their moments. Have seen some bad traits in others though.
  22. Cheers salt moon. Only concern is the 2 dogs scrapping. They have been around bitches in season before but didn’t turn nasty. Just turned into dick heads! Got a bit of time yet and it all depends on what the bitch has. They will mainly be collie lurcher with some saluki and a dash of bull.
  23. Sean C on here has a border. It’s used for ferreting and bushing. He doesn’t come on that often though.
