My mate and myself went yesterday eve for our final outing at the ducks, not a great eve as it turned frostyish with no wind at all.We arrived at the pond we were going to shoot at around 5ish and when walking in to it 4 mallard left the rushes which we managed to drop 2 good drakes and 2 nice retrieves for my lab.We took up position and got well hidden in the high rushes but the ducks, although there were plenty flying about just seemed to be interested in somewhere else.I did manage to bag another mallard and my mate had moved to a flash pond a couple of hundred yds back where he managed 2 tea

abslutly brilliant now whats the chances of that getting published in the newspapers!!! nice shooting pal job well done There is every chance it will be published or at least used on a poster with the lamb carcasas missing. No offence to Foxdropper who was doing perfectly legal fox control but the anti mob could use that pic big time in the future.A lot of city-town people dont understand country ways and the ins and outs of hunting but if they seen that pic[especially with the cubs] id imagine they would have a very low opinion on diging and fox control as its very easy remove the la

Liam ive humped a lot of smelly hairy auld things but never a goat, how low can a man stoop, lol.as for the age thing,i reckon there is not a lot between us apart from me being a very hansom looking fella and you, well a bit like the goats that you are regulary humping, lol.

Liam your geting too long in the tooth for that auld caper, leave it to young kevin, you sit in the car next time and have a coffee while you wait for Kevi to bring home the bacon or should i have said GOAT,lol, sounds like ye had a good mornings craic. Was diging last friday afternoon and on the way back to van about 12-15 wild goats got up in front of me,f***ing nuicence while carrying tools and leading dogs that want at them.

I agree Smasher,i give the parvo at 6 weeks and the 7-1 at 12 weeks, also give the parvo to the bitch 2 weeks prior to having pups same with worm dose, vet reckons it leaves the pups immune system a lot stronger.I buy both from my vet for 12-15 euro each.

I would think everyone that digs is in agreement with you FD,but as has happened can happen at any given time and its usually on a wet, windy miserable day or in a deep earth, yes the locater has saved manys the terriers life but in saying that i never lost a terrier to ground pre-locater,touch wood.

Theres plenty out there that will sell you a patterdale and also fill you with utter shite about the dog and its background and thats all you will be buying SHITE.

In the vehicle from the good ol days, you've just recently purchased a different vehicle so hands up and admit you put it there just incase and was',nt it just aswell, ive always said, better to be looking at it than for it,and anyway i seen you use a bar for years so dont be fibbing.

I can remember geting 20-22 quid for pelts depending on the condition they were in,that was skint and dried,a lot of money back then when work was scarce and time on your hands.

Mix molasas with barley and feed well for a few days without shooting the pond, once they start feeding on the sweet barley they will keep coming back for more.

1st terrier i ever had was a bullxrussell back in the mid 70s and i had them about me until late 80s early 90s.The black dogs came on the scene around me in the early 80s and sort of took over so it was very hard to try and keep a good standard of bullxrussell going especially when there was nothing within miles about to breed from.I have at the minute a very good bullxpatt [staffx] that is gone 5 year old and a lot of game dug with him.He from a well tested staff bitch that was dug to on several occasions and a 7 year old patt dog that had nothing to prove. She had 3 pups,2 dogs 1 bitch, both d

As Snizle already has said, choose wisely.Plenty of lads breeding bullxrussell but are they from a working background.Plenty of lads think just because they have a good working JR bitch that a staff or pb across her is bound to produce good workers but it dont work that way,as a lot of the time the bull used is not suitable. The 1st job is to get a decent working russell that you can trace back a bit dog or bitch then the next is the bull whichever type you want to use, same thing again make sure its from tried and tested workers.Sometimes the 1stx will come too big but not always, your best bet i

Has any of you lads ever seen a bitch that has had pups become a lot harder at there work.I had a balck fell type bitch about 15 year back that was a bayer-mixer type and really steady. She then had a litter of pups,3 to be exact and looked after them grand. The season then came around again and this bitch which was 5-6 year old turned from a steady reliable working bitch into a demon, within 3-4 digs she was smashed to bits and eventually was stolen along with the rest of my dogs, but what a change in her after having the pups.

These bomb proof terriers your talking about FD,how would they fare out pre-ban when a bigger better quarry was legal to dig, would they be bomb proof wk in wk out then,?
-
Well said Stig, and the older you get the quicker it goes.

The life or career of a working terrier differes greatly among terriers. Some may only be complete sounders and more complete nut cases but both will get the job done. The sounder should go on to live and work for many years where as a hard dog will be lucky to see half the amount of work and the lifespan of the sounder, does this make the sounder any better, imo no,they just have different workstyles same as a footballers career will last 15-20 year where as a tradesman will go for 40+.I have read on here a lot of people saying that a hard dog will eventually spew with the style they work,i know

It depends on the area=land you shoot on,up your way Neil its nearly all grassland and tillage where as with me there is a lot of bog and marshy land teaming with snipe. There is one bit of wet-land just out the road from me and you could put a couple of 100 snipe up out of it +ducks of different types.

Apart from the lack of a terrier , which Fatman pointed out, could I suggest a fair maiden to rub my tired back and shoulders like they did in the middle ages. You have 1,DEMSH,lol.
-
A good sounding terrier, all that gear is useless without the dog, lol.
-
Maybe so Neil but we are talking pre-locater,not too many men dug without the use of a bar then, very important piece of kit back then and dont for 1 minute say you never used 1,lol as i know you did.
-
I agree but the t-bar aided us a lot. admit it FM,you still use a t bar.....go admit it lol Always in the van Liam but rarely use if ever now Liam but i will admit that im happier known its in the van near bye if needed, even the best most expensive locater can f**k up.

Valuable piece of kit pre-locater was the t-bar,as for the tongs, every man to his own, lol.

Nice strong bitch Liam, best of luck with her, looks like the stuff that was up at the westmeath show, would there be a trace of sealyham blood in her.
