Some several times but by probing the bar into the walls of the dig usually you found the dog unless you wereway of.While listening for the dog all involved listened and then it was agreed where the best mark was so most times we got it right, took time but no other way to do it.

Mid 70s al that was about me was bullxrussells of various xs and fox terrierxrussells bar 1 auld lad that had a yard full of red terriers simular to a red fell or lakeland.I seen a lot of stuff dug using these type of terriers with very little failures in litters, but they were bred tight as most lads dug together and transport was not that easy come bye back then, either was money so a lot of hunting was done on foot. Many think a bullx is an out and out head case but most i have seen or owned were sensible workers, happy to sound away unless the quarry brought the fight to them then they would t

I had a springer bitch that took siezures almost every time she was taken out shooting so after about 5-6 outings i decided not to bring her anymore as i also had another + a labrador.I had noticed while puting her through basic training that she would act like she was fiting but passed no heed. When she was left at home she was grand, not a thing wrong with her so after about 2 months i took her down the back fields and tossed a couple of dummys for her to retrieve, she was fine on the 1st few but the more excited she got she then went into a seizure again so she is now with an old lady as a pet

Remember entering a ferret in a huge place in the middle of a field after seeing about 20 rabbits run in to it.We had only got the grey box a couple of weeks earlier and did not really know much about it.There was also a local radio station about half a mile away and after no rabbit bolted we said not to worry we will dig to the ferret using the locater. My mate turned it on and 1st thing we heard was the birdy song,f*****g hilarious, waited about 2 hours for the ferret to eventually reappear. At least the music kept you's occupied Fat man lol Yeah,Bollocks froze of us waiting for the poxy fer

About 20 odd year ago i was at home 1 day doin f**k all so decided i would bring a couple of the terriers for a ramble.Where i live there are 10 houses in the estate,me in no 5.Many years before the houses were built there was what was known as a work house on the site with drainage running the full lenght of the estate at every f***ing angle. The day i took the 2 terriers for a walk [1 black dog and a small lakey bitch with 6 week old pups in her kennell] they both put nose to the ground and away. Each house has a 1 acre garden at the back and within 2 minutes both were a couple of gardens away

Too true Liam, the t-bar had other uses aswell, lol happy new year to you and the family Liam.

There was nothing wrong with a strong dog,as said good tool at the end of a dig in certain situations but in the right hands, its the macho lads that got the strong dog a bad name same as it is with the lurcher and terrier men always someone to f**k it up and then everyone gets tarred with the same brush. You will always find its the lads that are not in the game 5minutes that are causing bother and lads that are at all there lives then they get hassled aswell even though they do nothing wrong.

Dug for a good few year without locater but as said you sort of picked your earths that you knew you would be able to work and also the terrier used would be a sounding type. The t-bar when used right was a great tool for locating the dog,i have never seen a terrier been hit by 1 in the process of finding a tube. The locater was a brilliant invention as far as terrier work goes.I would not agree that it makes for a better terrier or man but it has saved a lot of terriers from death been able to dig down to them now quicker than before, many the good dog was lost in a cave in or such. The other +

Is there many lads geting big numbers of woodcock when out shooting, reason i ask is i took the dogs for a ramble today after dinner more or less to walk of the dinner and put up 4 woodcock in a very small area,no gun with me but they were in a birch ditch about 20yds in width and about 150yds long,i usually would not see that many in a days shooting.

agreed, its none of their business, you shouldnt have to justify yourself mate if you havent done nothing wrong The minute he posted on an open forum it became everyone's buisness,i could turn round and say its none of your buisness how i replied to his post.I did not say anything wrong to the chap,my opinion anyone that sells as he describes as a top class worker is not 100% commited to terriers.I hope he finds what he is looking for in his quest for a working terrier but most lads dont or wont seel there dogs, any dog that is forsale is 90% of the time someone elses shit.all im saying is he

When times were so hard ,what price did u actually get for this top class fox bitch,i would give a guess around £200 and how long would that keep food on the table. We are iving in Irelandnot some poor country in Africa you were never going to starve, most of us have all at some point seen hard times but you get through it and survive.I have been in situations where i had not even contact with my dogs but they were not sold, they were kept by friends, any man that says he had to sell his dogs due to hard times well his heart was not really in it in the 1st place.

Just after saying goodbye to an old friend and companion. He was a out and out hunting man, loved his terriers and lurchers and kept some right good greyhounds in his time, but his 1st love was game cocks, and what a man to breed and handle them.He kept some real good bullxrussell types aswell,1 in particulal a bitch called thatch.Joe hunted all his life and enjoyed every minute of it,could use his fists as good as any man and loved his pint, may he rest in pease,he also had an old say good night, god bless and guide you on your way,i hope your on your way now JOE,RIP.

Being Able To Shout Your Bitch/dog Out
fat man replied to bud9's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Fair play mate thats why I vowed I would alway obedience train a dog to the best of my ability because of the three day dig He was my first digging dog and for three days there was no sound and thought we were digging to a dead terrier. I take great pleasure in training a pup and at the end of it you've got a terrier thats a pleasure to work. Mole where do you actually get the time to dig as from reading your posts you seem to be on here most of the time, sorry i forgot you dont dig you call out the terrier. -
Seen 2 good harrier type hounds die after hunting deer well into the night in a big estate. We were pushing fox out to guns and lurchers in a big cover beside a big estate that held a lot of fallow deer. The day was goin well with 6-7 foxs accounted for but then 2 of the senior hounds from the pack broke from the rest and crossed the road and got into the estate and were away. This was about 4pm on a winters eve and we could hear them hunting hard from a vantage point we had drove to while the other lads were gathering up the rest of the pack.Soon darkness came and though we tried to get in fron

9 times outa ten his sheep are in barns and he shoots there dogs just for been on his land...he shoots the rabbits him self as he's a keen shooter but he hates the people trespassing on his land to lamp his rabbits.like as all ready been said the police just shrug it of and that's that.he said to me he sees it as this"its his land his rabbits and if people want to poach it then expect to lose a dog" he's the typ of person who if he saw the dog running a rabbit and wasn't intrested in stock what so ever hed still shoot it... if thats the case he needs a bit of a kicking himself If the

fat man replied to bud9's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Dillydog i dont doubt for a second that your bitch has done all you've said its done but in my view if a terrier is right up in its quarrys face giving it as good as its geting back abd all of a sudden its owner is calling it out well i dont think it should come away, not if the terriers heart is truly in it.I would be always doubting the dogs ability afterwards and waiting for it to come away of its on accord, but as said every man to its own,if that type suit a person then thats there buisness, its them that kennell them after all.
