  1. nice one mate. I've seriously gotta get a quad my backs still killing from our laden doen yomp yesterday
  2. We had 4 out of 11 carrying young yesterday, the seasons getting shorter and shorter. They must be mating when there's a foot of snow on the ground. Its getting like that more and more they breed all year round in the right locations, we had some half grown ones the other day so when were they born? yeah it's mad mate, I remember as a kid ferreting at least till march, no chance now, lucky to do any in feb i reckon. I suppose being right down in the south west it maybe a little warmer than up north but the last 2 winters have been as cold as i can remember, so is it just the rabb
  3. She's about 7 and half months mate, I've had her out with the ferrets since about 4 mnths or so , it's starting to click now, you can see the exitement in her when you hear the rumbling. I haven't ran her much on the lamp just the odd run and letting her watch my mates dog. Will have her out again end of next week when the moons gone, and hopefully the frost. Good luck with your pup mate. Kev
  4. Well done lads It's a massive bonus when the dog accurately marks, the pup could become invaluable in the future

  7. Was out early yesterday for a day's ferreting, the weather was glorious crisp frost in the morning and bright sunshine as the day wore on Started on a long hedge which was thick with hawthorn and bramble, set the long nets either side with the dogs on the inside, first one bolted and was straight back in, within 5 mins another bolt the rabbit turned to run the long net and my lurcher pup was on it after about 20yrds she nailed it as it turned for the hedge I was well chuffed. We managed another 6 out of the hedge and decided to leave the long nets and rabbits there and head down t
  8. Cheers Bill, I've sent you a pm, glad the pups foot is sorted, just a walk for mine today they're both crashed out still, back out with the ferrets tommorw morning, then out with the lamp once the moon and frost has gone. cheers kev
  9. Cheers Lads we ended up with 11, but I could've left happy after she had the first one.
  10. My pup had her first rabbit today whilst ferreting, it was about a 20 yrd run up the long net and she took it as it was about to hit the hedge. I'm well chuffed she's been coming out ferreting for a while and I've allowed her to hold a couple in nets at first but this is the first on the run.
  11. The one thing I've seen mentioned a few times is RESPECT, I think this is something which is severly missing in todays world. I'm not particulary old (34) but I had nothing but respect for the old boy's who first took me out with dogs, I listened and didn't pretend I knew it all. They taught me to respect not just the dogs but everything that was involved in running the dogs, the land, the wildlife ( not just what you were going to kill) and each other. I'm now keeping dogs again because I can give the dogs the amount of TIME they need ( I'm bored of going on the p*ss, and would truly rather b
  12. Hi Kev, that may be possible providing it's going to a loving/caring working home, and guess what? by the time that they will be ready for going to their new homes, we'll be down in Devon with our caravan and all our hounds in Cullompton area. Yours in sport, sowhat. Thanks sowhat, the nagging has began, I've got a beddyx whip pup I've started this season, and a jrt, I would like another to complete my little pack and as I've said those dogs look cracking. PM me when your down this way, I'm in Exeter only 10 mins from cullompton, could meet for a mooch about one morning maybe. All

  14. Try setting gate nets or similar at 10m intervals along the long net, any that bolt straight out hit the long net any that run the hedge hit the gate net
  15. welcome mate... how did you get the bug? have you been out and worked ferrets before? or just wanted to keep ferrets and give it a go? Maybe someone close to you will let you tag along for a day out and show you the ropes If not read all you can and get out and learn yourself , you would probably wanna get a locator as well, you don't want to lose your new hunting companions Good luck Kev

  18. I'm still training my pup mate, found it best to start with a toy in the house somewhere where she can't get away from you, hallway maybe, throw the toy( not to far) and when she picks up the toy call her back ( work on re-call first) when she brings it back make a big fuss of her and give her a treat, do it a couple of times and stop. Mine picked this up easy with practice. Next take her in the garden and do the same lengthening the distance ( don't over do it keep it short and fun). I've been using a rabbit skin dummy now and she's taken to it well, I throw the dummy and she retrieves it
  19. couple of pics mate I'm out with the ferrets on fri I'll get some more up to date photos up was out for a shine last night was crap she had a couple of runs, but the wind had died and the moon was out and bright All the best for the rest of the season

  21. My pups just gone 7mnths now started her out with the ferrets around 4mnth and over the last few weeks let her have a look out with the lamp. Took her out with my mates dog first and a few walks on her own, no pressure on her kept on the slip and a couple of runs on walked up squatters. she's not caught yet ( just missed on the strike the other night) but she's young and this season is for her to have a look next season the real fun will begin
